Dell has poor customer service? Not for me, they have given me a new screen (I broke it), a new PSU and a new motherboard on my old Dell.
Perhaps they've improved over the years. However, when my parents needed them, they did everything but refuse to help. Besides, if I sent in my laptop, if they checked the contents of the hard drive... I'm in trouble. I've got a lot of movies, games, and software... stockpiled. They see that, and it's more than likely gone.

I remember my cousins laptop had this wi-fi problem and he came over to have me check it out. Now I know the source of the problem. When his laptop moves on to the second problem I guess I'll tell him this. By the way, i think he got it fixed with his warranty.

HP had nice laptop designs. Was just about to buy one. I find that their laptops have better designs then the ones from Dell. But tbh, if it is that bad, I won't bother getting a laptop from them.

This issue with Nvidia chips are quit old. Sorry to hear about your problems.

I too worry about my notebook dying on me because my video card falls in the faulty video card category.

I'm just hoping it doesn't die anytime soon!

Note for the OP, buy a f*cking extended warranty when you make a purchase! Yes it may cost you a bit of coin but what's 200 dollars to cover any repairs that would be needed over 2 or 3 years? Considering it costs a boatload to fix a laptop, even a disc drive can be over 300 dollars, it would make sense that you get an extended warranty, as laptops are the most horribly unreliable machines available in terms of durability. Warranties only last one year, and at best laptops last 4 years before going completely tits up. HP are a great manufacturer, I have a desktop that has lasted 5 years now, including the hard drive as they use quality components, my brother has a HP laptop that is great aside from the fact that it slid out of his backpack and killed the graphics card, but thankfully the warranty fully covers it for 3 years.

Sure, there is always the random chance that the motherbaord could just break on me, but since this problem effects every tx model HP needs to handle this issue. They have extended the warranty on other models with this chip, so why not mine? Seems like they are trying to cut cost here by fixing some laptops but not others.

But ya, my next computer will have an extended warranty, just so I don't have to put up with this crap.

EDIT: Sorry if I sound cranky, it most things tend to work for a reasonable amount of time, and this isn't an isolated incident and HP knows this is a common problem, but is refusing to do anything.

Compaq laptop thats been going strong for 2 years now...

Have a Toshiba that's 4 years old, and still runs like the day I bought it...

Fuck, I have a Sony Vaio that has a 900MHz processor and 512MB Ram in it, that runs Windows XP just as good as any other computer I have! It sits in my TV center with a capture card in it for recording TV shows that I wanna burn later (500gb drive in it, lol)

Learn to take care of your shit, and you won't have to spend money to fix it!

For laptops, get a cooling pad, never use it on a cloth surface, and every other week let the battery completely die in it, even if you keep it plugged in... helps keep the recharge cycle in it, so it'll last 2 1/2 hours the day you bought it, and 2 1/2 hours 2 years from now.

I'm sorry to hear about your problem... It is very unfortunate that it did that...

I too own one of the DV series of HP laptops, and like yours, a couple months ago the wireless started to act up. After some research I found that my laptop was under an extended warranty so I called HP and sent it in to have it fixed for free.

Upon its return the invoice told what they really had done.

Listed on the invoice it said that the Wireless Card, Heating Pad (whatever that is O.o), and the Mother Board had been replaced. When I saw that I figured that it wasn't so much the wireless card going out as much as it was some other problem that they failed to mention.

I just hope that now, after hearing about yours, my graphic's card doesn't go out. I'm going to check to see if it falls under the faulty models (though I'm pretty much already sure it does since it is a DV series

)....

Hopefully it will last me longer than expected because as a whole I really like this laptop (except for the fact that I'm on my third charger, they easily overheat and then soon after begin to breakdown). Good luck to you as well and I hope that because of all of this commotion, something is done by HP on your behalf.

A lot of computers have common problems, if HP is not doing anything to fix it then they are just going to piss off and lose customers. My brother has a laptop that runs great aside from the fact that it has Vista on it, it has a GeForce 7700 shared graphics chip which works fine, only I think he had issues with the wireless as well and they had to replace the card, plus the display getting shot meant that the motherboard has to be replaced since it doesn't have a dedicated outboard graphics card like a desktop. Methinks this wireless issue extends to numerous HP laptops, imo their computers not only look frail, but they feel cheap when you pick one up, the casing is so soft it's no wonder they break easily.

As good a company as they are, I would personally never buy one of their laptops, I would sooner get a Dell or Asus over anything else on the market. In my experience the two brands I have not owned or dealt with in some way are the two that seem to be the best. I am on my 2nd laptop in 4 years, my first was a Toshiba Satellite and I made the same mistake you did, I didn't get an extended warranty and the disc drive went tits up, cost be 350 dollars to replace the damn thing just over a year after I purchased it. My current laptop is an Acer which runs fine, haven't had many issues, only it runs hotter then hell itself

Hello gbatemp, I have come here to tell my story about how Hewertt Packard treats its customers.

About 16 months ago I bought laptop from them, a tx1000. It worked fine for my needs, but about 2 months ago the wireless went out. This wasn't a problem for me since I only used it for work to type on trips. However, last week the display went out and I am no longer able to access the hard drive, go into safe mode, or flash my BIOS.

So I have contacted HP about this problem, and they told me to pay $400 to fix this. I know those laptops life spans aren’t this short, so I did some research on why it could be going to so quick. After looking online I discovered that some other brands of HP, the dv2000 and dv9000 have gotten an extended warranty because of a faulty NVIDIA chip, with symptoms including the wireless going out followed by the whole thing going kaput.

Putting the two together, I realized my laptop has the faulty chip, and I found out from some news sources to confirm that it is the same chip.

Here is an e-mail I have sent to their CEO on their website. He has put it up for people to tell him about issues or for feedback. Links backing up my claims are in my e-mail below.

"Hello, I am **** ***** and I am e-mailing you regarding a problem with my notebook computer and your customer services. My issue is regarding the tx1000 model notebook and a defective NVIDIA chip, along with how HP is regarding my customer

About 16 months ago I purchased your computer going into my second year of college. I needed a laptop computer as part of my work, and to write up school assignments. This was a big investment for me at the time, and my brother assured me that HP was a good brand when it came to notebooks.

Well about two months ago I started having issues with my laptop. The wireless would randomly work and stop working. This wasn't that big of an issue since I could work on my projects at home and be able to bring the information to work. However, last week the whole thing failed. The screen would no longer turn on, and I could no longer access my hard drive. The LEDs on my laptop would work, but nothing I could did would help this problem.

I contacted your customer service, and the reply I got was that it would cost me $400 to fix this problem. This is insane that the thing would break so early! My brother's computer has been working for over three years with very minor problems, and one of your laptops totally shuts down barely after the warranty expires?

After looking up some information on the internet, I have seen that there has been an extended warranty on the dv2000, dv6000, and the dv9000 laptops. Other news sources have cited this is because of a faulty NVIDIA chip.

TGDaily (http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/42472/118/) has a quote from NVIDIA that states:
"The chip claims arise out of allegedly defectively designed NVIDIA chips G86, G86A2, G84, C51, G72, G72M, G73, G72A3, MCP67 and NV42."

After looking in my owner’s manual I have seen that the tx1000 model has the C51 NVIDIA chip. Why hasn't it been recalled, or at least the warranty extended? This is not an isolated problem because on the HP forums I have found two threads with 100+ posts commenting or stating they are having the same issue as me.

After some time I managed to talk to a case manager named Milo Billard. Milo has said that he is aware of people saying they are having a problem on the forums, but he would only give me 50% off of the repairs. This is unacceptable for me to have to pay for buying a defective product.

I feel that your company should take responsibility for this problem if it is so widespread. Like I stated before, this was a major investment for me. I expected to have purchased a high quality computer that I could use throughout the rest of college, and now it’s worthless. I am deeply hurt by how your company treats its customers. I need a computer for my job, and I would like to reach a fair resolution. I hope that we can reach a conclusion that will restore faith in your company."

So basically, HP treats its customers like crap and I am never buying from them again, and unless you have some fetish for owning defective computers I would advise staying away from all HP computers. What really makes me mad is that my case manager admits that HP knows this is a problem, but that they refuse to do something about this! If anyone wants to know more about these issues, or have an HP laptop that is acting up, go to www.hplies.com , or at least support everyone who got screwed over by HP.

If you own a laptop made by HP that is a tx series or dv series, it is not a question on whether your computer will act up, it is when it will act up. Every computer in those series has the bad chip and it will always edventually fail, often right after the warrenty expires.

Laptops require extra warrenty purchase, if you buy Acer you get 3 years extra for a small price.

Also people are using twitter these days to get problems fixed faster , check http://www.hardocp.com/news.html?news=NDA1...HVzaWFzdCwsLDE=

They have a few examples even when dealing with HP.

But i must stress whichever company you buy a laptop from go for the extra warrenty the small amount you pay for the 3 years extra is allways less then when something major breaks down.

From what I have read, I think that the replacement motherboards are also likely to be defective. I have heard of people getting them replaced and 8 months later the thing start acting up again. Just make sure to contact at the first signs of problems.

Ya, I have read of something called the Moss Warranty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson-Moss_Warranty_Act) but it only applies to the U.K. I have yet to find a similar law for the U.S.A.

Oh, so the replacement mother board may be defective as well? That's just great...

But thanks for the info, and FYI, HP just put out a recall on defective batteries at the end of May... Luckily mine's not one of them, sounds like HP is just full of high quality products these days *rolls eyes*.

haha I remember calling HP for technical issues with their products and some guy with a heavy accent (from India I guess) tried to troubleshoot me through with some of their basic guide but it was so hard to understand him. Their customer support sucks, and they would not allow returns. >.>

I had that with Toshiba, but never with HP's tech support. The last thing I want is to talk to some illiterate foreigner who can't speak English worth fuck all, I wish companies would stop outsourcing the tech support to India and China, it's annoying as hell for those of us trying to get service. I had to call Toshiba 3 times in a row before I got someone who could decently speak English and it was some Chinese guy which wasn't all bad.

So I got my laptop to work for a bit yesterday. However, it felt really hot on my lap. It often felt warm, but today I decided to record the temperature. I put it down for half an hour, and let some temperature measuring software check the GPUs temp.

It came to 86 degrees Celcius, way above what an average laptop should have, and this also confirm the GPU which is defective. Potential fire hazard maybe? Well I am going to call them tomorrow and tell them that their defective product is a hazard.

I've had 3 laptops died on me. One after another. I personally think that's how laptops are meant to be. Last 2-3 years.

Im thinking that it might be the surroundings and heavy use which may break your laptop sooner.
Like chain burning cd/dvd even tho it is possible doing it means more heat inside the case.
The more heat from either gaming/cpu crunching or this kind of use will mean your laptop will break down faster.

If your laptop isnt in an ideal envoirement like being cooled enough then indeed it may break down earlier then you want it to.

I think i said it before buying extra warrenty on a laptop is the 1st thing you must consider!!!
