Hallelujah!! I thought it would never ship. This was a great game when I was a kid. Now if we can just get HOMM, Disciples, Warlords, UFO and Age of Wonders. I would crown the DS as best handheld system ever.

AWESOME! This used to be my favorite PC game back in the days. This was a great multiplayer game back then and I hope it works well on the DS.

This game seems to have a sort of built-in "copy protection" in that it is hard to understand the interface without having some instructions to explain it to you. I only played a little of the very beginning of the game and was having a hard time trying to figure out what exactly to do or just how to do it, though I HAVE had quite a few brewskies at this point, so maybe that has something to do with it.

This is possibly the funniest thing I have ever read on this board. Damn their clever copy protection! Outsmarted again!

The interface is though in fact rather tricky to use even if you know how it works. It's very unresponsive. So for example if you want to shot at something you first select the shoot mode which works well but then you have to touch the target. It requires sometimes a couple of times stabbing the screen until the game figures out you want to shoot there. The same goes with moving. The game just can't decide when you touched the screen and when not. Also the lack of a left and right mouse button is a bit annoying. They did it as far as I can tell using single touch or pressing the screen but in some parts you need to double-tap the screen. It's really odd and cumbersome. If you can do live with the clumsy interface it is a nice game. PC version is still better though. Mouse + Keyboard + JA = WIN!

Has anyone else had a problem with this not coming out of sleep mode once you open it back up? It's really annoying and, thankfully, only happened with this game. Using a DS-X (I know, I know) and used the arm7.fix on the rom. Tried using the unfixed rom and it gives the good old "The save data can't be addressed" and it doesn't go to sleep mode at all, so that's probably irrelevant.

Any ideas other than "buy CycloDS"?

A good game, alittle fiddly though even when you have played the game previously. I agree, the PC version is alot better, with the added bonus of JA Deadly Games, JA2, Unfinished Business, Wildfire and the Urban Chaos Mod. Good attempt though, hope to see more from Strategy first.

I'm impressed... this is a nice port of JA. Too bad the last time I played JA was... well when it came out in 93...and after that I'd replayed X-Com and kinda forgotten JA. I was quite frustrated looking for commands (that used to be easy alt/ctrl combos on the pc) for a while though.. so I figured I'd post answers to questions I'd had when I first started in hopes that it'll help others:

0) clicking and holding down the stylus on the map gives a move for all people to a spot (handy when you finally clear a sector).
1) clicking and holding down the stylus on your player allows you to use crouch which is really a life-saver when in enemy territory.
2) already answered by another, but traversing sectors is done by moving all people to an edge of the current map and then clicking on the map button. It'll have a new menu item indicating to traverse to the directions available (west when in the starting sector (60?) or north)
3) reloading weapons... works by trying to shoot the weapon which is out of ammo and having ammo in inventory (I know sad but I must confess I tried dragging and dropping the ammo on the weapon and visa-versa for at least a minute before giving up and accidentally noticing I could still choose to shoot and whala.. it reloaded my weapon).
4) you can get guards to move into the sector by clicking to go to the map, (you first select the map for From then To, then transfer by +/-)
4) save is accessed by clicking on the top of the calendar, load on the bottom when "back in your room".
5) I got a nice refresher of what to think about and do for the game's strategy by using the following helpful link: http://www.thecomputershow.com/computersho...lliancewalk.htm

Hope this helps..
I'd love to see JA2 and X-Com ported this nicely.

Just a reminder... There is Rebelstar. It's close enough to X-Com and Laser Squad. It was developed by Julian Gollop, of X-Com fame.

What ever happened to JG? He's working in Bulgaria at Ubisoft. His last reported project was that Chessmaster game.

Anyways...

The "SAVE" option is available from the calendar?

Holy shit! I think this was a shitty ass port! The interface blows (even though I've figured out how to do everything), the new music sucks, the implementation is poor (they fail to emphasize/stress the personalities of the mercs like the original PC one does), they took a lot of features out, and changed a few of the gameplay mechanics.

Seriously, what the fuck is it with characters shooting the tree right in front of them (that they're using for cover)? That never happened in the original (and for damn good reason). Plus, for some reason people lack the ability to shoot something farther than a few squares away. Even Ivan with his 91 marksmanship rating can't hit shit further than 6 or 7 squares away (in the original, you're looking at about double that amount). They really messed up how the mercs hear sounds in the environment too. Wow! Ice heard a gunshot from the west (when it was actually the east)! NO SHIT! Your own teammate shot it! Oh look! You stopped walking because you spotted an enemy that your teammate already spotted! LAME.

A really shitty port, no wonder it took them so long to release it because they couldn't put up with the fact that they were going to release a shitty product until it was too late. If you need a refresher on how the game is, I think you can buy it from goodoldgames.com and since the company doesn't exist anymore, you should be able to download the original PC game for free on some abandonware website and use DOSBox

Yeah I was wondering about that, I just chalked it up to the fact that they don't seem to know where people on their own team are (so they assume it's enemy fire or something).

It's been awhile since I played JA1. (I owned it back in the day, so I made a guilt-free abandonware download).

I did exactly what you said, and I must concur.

This is a shitty port.

They did things that made no sense. For example, Vinny no longer starts with a toolkit, AND you cannot find a toolkit in the processing plant in starting sector 60. What's up with that?
