Sorry for such the delayed response. I think adjusting the screws could work, but I don't really want to drill holes in his chassis. Also, I'm kind of curious how the difference between flat and round washers would make a difference. They're just washers. Of course, you guys probably know a lot more about this than I do, so could you explain how washers can make a difference?

Also, if they do make a difference, is there a right combination of washers that work best? Also, how tight do you tighten each screw? Every little detail could help me even more. Thanks in advance

Oh man. I totally forgot about this thread.

I made a megalithic post, time ago when the server was still acting fuzzy, and it went lost.

Sooo... lemme remember what I did write here. The tightness is REALLY important. Just tight a screw too much, and the 360 will overheat/RROD again. Seeing that this is a motherboard flexing problem, you have two ways to go:
1) Loose all the screws, and tighten up them just enough to make the 360 not overheat (it's not really overheating, it's just that the temperature sensor under the CPU is also [and mainly] pressure-sensitive) and let them stay that way.
2) Tighten up as much as you can, but without putting too much strenght in it. Too much pressure can be BAD.

Remember to tighten up all the screws EQUALLY. Also, if you've got a GPU issue, tightening up the upper-right corner more than the other corners might help too.

If this still continue to fail, there's always the Cent Fix (I personally recommend that).

Also there's no need to drill the iron cage. You'd only end up having a ugly iron cage

I doubt it would matter if you used flat washers or round washers because theres hardly any difference.

The amount of washers is more important in my opinion because if you only use one washer on each screw between the heatsink and the gpu then when you tighten the screws, the motherboard flexes. This happens because the height of the gpu chip itself is higher due to it being higher in the middle and lower on the outside the tension of the screws flexes the motherboard.

If you used too many washers the heatsink won't be contacting the top of the gpu enough so that can be a problem too.

I just use one normal washer and one spring washer on each screw and that seems to be the right height.

@raulpica

I've got a spare chassis so if/when I want to admire one in its virgin glory, I can swap it.

Since most of you guys think that it's the motherboard flexing, I'm starting to think that I may have tightened the screws too tight. I used 1 normal washer and one nylon washer on each side of the motherboard. Do you think that if I loosened the screws and made sure they all were tightened evenly it would solve the Xbox's problems?

well...if humidity and gravity and location and motherboard builds and ...you get the point.....
It could work....
I got one xbox 360 that gives me RROD still... but if I remove case it works without adjusting screws....
Me I am going this adjustments to the CPU screws to find the sweet spot.
But if I was to dig on a caseless 360...it works fine...so now I am adjusting a smidge....I want the case on it and once fixed (with case)...I am going to paint it up....it is an accomplishment personally...
*The other 3 xbox's just work - go figure

Edit:
This problem xbox that got RROD seems that I tightened the screens too tight. I mean I didnt at first but the heat over time must have expanded something. Anyways once I twisted the screws off (could hear a snap - not a bad snap), I turned the screws until I felt a little resistance when tightening and I am good.
I just need to break the 3 week mark and I will consider it totally fixed
