Is this a spin off of SMT games?
It's apparently Persona game. (It shares most of its Japanese title with the first game in the Persona series, anyway.) Which would make it a spin off of the SMT games, yes, or possibly even a spinoff of a spinoff of the SMT games.

it's a SMT game, but not a "Persona" spinoff (small difference...).

Devil Survivor gives players seven days to save Tokyo from destruction. Combat is in turn-based, strategy-rpg style (like Fire Emblem or Disgaea). Char + monster design by Kazuma Kaneko...

I'm officially stoked...

Its a bit deeper than that. In battle you go into the field like a tactical rpg but when you go into a fight with a monster on the field it goes to dragon quest (or I guess you can say original smt) battle mode for a turn and then goes back to the tactical battle field map. Its kind of hard to explain but fun nevertheless.

Shin Megami Tensei isn't the name of the series, SMT is a series within the Megaten series, as are the Persona titles.

Megami Ibunroku is, technically, another series of games within Megami Tensei. Since "Megami Ibunroku Persona" was the original Persona game, you could technically nest them as (alphabetically):

Code:
Megami Tensei
ÂÂÂÂ -DDS
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ-Avatar Tuner
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ-Shin Megami Tensei
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ -Devil Children/Demikids
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ -Devil Summoner
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ-Soul Hackers
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ -NINE
ÂÂÂÂ -Giten MT
ÂÂÂÂ -Majin Tensei
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ-Ronde
ÂÂÂÂ -Megami Ibunroku
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ-Devil Survivor
ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ-Persona
ÂÂÂÂ -MT Gaiden
Why did I just put myself through all that trouble? In a very loose sense, you can get an idea of what kind of game/story a particular entry in the series will be based on where, exactly, it falls into place. The ibunroku, for example, are still RPGs, but they aren't the same type of RPG as SMT, and aren't quite the same world.

I am playing games outside my language.
Actually I almost never play games in German.
My problem is just that I don't speak Japanese... yet.
Just 90 lessons to go. Means 3 months till I get to play this.
... Ugh, I don't wanna wait! >_

While the Main Character of Devil Survivor is a Minato Expy (down to headphones), it's a Platoon-based game, like in ASH, where you can have 3 units (1 human, two Demons) at one squad. Unfortinatly, you only have 4 Leader slots (and thus, 4 platoons) so try not to screw it up... luckly, you can summon and unsummon Demons on the fly.

The game uses yet another modification of the Press Turn system, where you only get 1 Extra attack each phase.
