My mom is starting a language program at the house for the little kids. She saw how I was doing in French and Spanish and decided it was a prime time to teach the little kids another language also.

How did you French reading guys and gal learn to read French?

she's settled on a couple of books and outlined a program for them that will probably work but the reading part really has us stumped. We cant teach them to speak French until we know how to say the words ourselves. Simple transliteration for the words in the books wont work, we need to learn how to read French before we start.

I need a program that will teach you to READ French. Not write, not spell, not conjugate or analyze or any of that stuff. Just simply somehin

Something like Hooked on Phonics for French?

So, do you remember the series or system that taught you to read? Do you know where I could get a copy of that series online?

I've searched and searched and I come up with nothing...Maybe I'm searching the wrong terms but it seems like the entire Internet is determined to teach children vocab and songs in foreign language but not reading, which is really weird to me, but thats beside the point.

Whats a series/system/program--not a computer program--that teaches French literacy/phonics and where can I get it online?

P.S.

Please dont say something as simple as "in school"

A mod can lock this topic as soon as I get a couple of good responses.

You need to know how to conjugate in order to read French, in frech there are over 10 (has been a while since i last had to study this) different times in which a word can be said.

There are some basic times, the most commun ones like the present and the past that should be learned first but in order to learn french you will have to be able to recognise them all. And there are a lot of exceptions to the rules to learn.

If you want to know how words are pronounced check out the french wiki dictionary. All the words in there have their phonetic writing next to them there.

O yeah i almost forgot. The most basic thing to know is that Frensh is not English. You can not translate a phrase word by word, you have to reorganise them before translationg them.

Example: I am going to the shop
word by word: Je entrein aller vers le magasin
what it should be: Je vais au magasin

Also a lot of english expressions do not exist or are worded differently in fresh so be carefull not to learn those kids english expressions that do not exist in Frensh.

Example

*sigh* apperantly no one understood what I am saying.

We are Home-schooled Americans we dont have a French Environment in which we might immerse the children so that they could learn.

We just want to teach out English speaking kids to speak French. To do this properly, my mom would like to learn to read French.

For example if a French family homeschooled their kids, what program or course might they go to the store and buy to read?

Hopefully Kindergareners and First graders in France schools are taught some form of reading before they are taught to congregate...

Ehhhh you can not really use the methods used to teach French kids over here for US kids since for the US kids already have a predefined notion of how the words are placed in a sentence. You really need material that teaches foreign kids to learn French.

People do not home school there kids over here, anyway i have never heard of it.
