Yeah, Rayor, I was also in a technological branch... we had 4 girls, one quit after one week, one quit after one semester, one quit after a year, and then there were only one girl left. I feel sorry for her, for everything she had to stand with all the guys who were sexually frustrated or whatever (they acted like that at least.)

So if I had a video game company, and I had two equally good/skilled/whatever possible employees... one male, one female... I'd probably choose the one which there are less of at the moment... female if there are too many guys, male if there are too many girls... I think a balanced team would be optimal for creating pretty much anything... same goes for young and old ones people... Old with experience, young with new and innovative ideas...

"But I'm sure they have females creating those "Ponyz" and "Nancy Drew's Mansion hunt" or some crap like that."

Why do you say that?

Well, generally because girls are more into horses and Nancy Drew is a mystery series aimed at girls.

Well said - @Anakir

Well, I would like to get paid since I don;t want to invest all my time into paying for classes and not get anything. But I figure, half of the courses involve some kind of programming or game mechanics, so I could still maybe get a crappy job that requires a little bit of computer science. Actually, before I dropped out of college, I wanted to be a broad cast journalist, but I changed my mind. I would like to do something along the lines of concept art/animation (I'm a decent artist) and improving game mechanics and user interface, and just random small stuff. I would love to help develop the storyline, weapons, items, and spells as well. I want to be the person who corrects those things that would have made a game really great if it just weren't for those few annoying things that weren't user friendly or a pain in the ass. For example, not being able to sell multiple items in some games and not being able to immediately end a long conversation dialogue if you accidently talked to some character again. Maybe also stuff like camera angles and balancing out skills for other games.

Have passion and drive and you can succeed.

I like it when you spoke about your art. You could go into Conceptual Design, Storyboarding for games. Possibly a graphic artist if you are use to Photoshop. 3D Modelling - 3DStudio Max or Maya if you willing to take the time to learn it. or possibly User Interface Design - The use of 'State Transition Diagrams' looking at objects and Events within the menus of the games.

I remember when PC games didn't include a 'Quit the Game Button', or 'Exit the Game Button' - You had to use ALT-F4 instead.

Stick with it and set your own goals. If you attend this course you can hopefully find your niche, or area of expertise. Good Luck.

Learn programming, it will help you A LOT and can bring you further by a big margin. And your correct about a cleaner job but not about a job as a secretary because if you start there and you can show your enthusiasm when it comes to games etc. and push it a little further all the time but very slowly to really show that you are interested in such a work. You gotta work yourself up from somewhere. Only because a few can get a dream job served on plate while the majority can't. It's better to see you as the majority.

I can get there myself, what I meant was that it sort of sounds like "they can't do any better".

Just a misunderstanding.

I know nothing of the industry but as general advice, try and narrow your field down a bit. It sounds like you're talking about 5 different job roles there; concept artists don't get involved with camera mechanics who have nowt to do with setting and storytelling and they don't fix the broken bits after the alpha testers have been in. You're working on a team, you won't be making the whole thing yourself so you can't do everything.

Yep.. seems to me that esoterica want's to work as an artist or as a game designer.

If you're good at drawing, getting an artist position shouldn't be too hard, experience with Photoshop and 3D animations tools would help too. Try sending your portfolio to some game companies.

The game designer is the person that decides all the stuff that you mentioned there: game story, user interface, balancing.. of course, depending on the size of the game those functions might be given to more people. Now, I don't know exactly what is needed to become a game designer, good writing is something essential, some basic programming and artistic skills could also be useful (so you don't overwhelm the programmers and artists too much with near impossible ideas). I believe some colleges have courses on that specific area, from what I've heard, some are serious and some are just trying to get money from kids that play to much Final Fantasy! Know which one to choose.

You could also enter the industry as a tester and eventually move on to another position.

And if you're good and serious about it, being a girl won't be a problem. Good luck.
