D2B with uncut legs, firmware 3.1U, purchased WiiKey v1 on WiiClip, presoldered. Actually bought it one day before the WiiKey 2 was announced

Just arrived today, installation went straight forward, clip is firmly seated on chip. Wii starts and plays originals fine.

Downloaded 1.4 Config disk, burned to Verbatim 8X DVD at 2X speed, put in Wii and it showed up as unrecognized disk.

Read in FAQ that 3.x+ FW requires GCOS version. Downloaded GCOS 1.4 Config disk, burned, showed up as an unrecognized disk.

Put in copy of Boom Blox, burned at 2x, and it showed up as an unrecognized disk.

What else do I do?

BTW, kudos to modchipcentral for the quick and easy shipment. I was stressing to find a good shop and they did good to get it out as quick as they did.

EXACT same thing happened to me. I ended up sending it back to modchipcentral and they're going to install the wiikey 2 for me. If you bought it from them, email them and complain. They'll give you money off the installation service AND replace the original wiikey with the newer one.

Awesome, thanks for that news Sportsmaniac.

I also ordered a Wiikey from them. Same problem with me.

After the perfect installation, it wouldn't read ANY of the legit backups I had. Even the config disc using the GCOS.

I just emailed them about it.

Do any of the pins look bent on the bottom of your Wiiclip?

Some Wiikeys look blue, some look like they have a touch of green in them, hell the Wiikey team many months ago even sent us a white batch of Wiikeys when the D2Ckey came out as they were overstocked on white pcb's

Thanks for the response Modchipcentral, I received an email this morning, too. I'll respond back to that, but I'll post some pictures here just in case I'm doing something wrong.

The bottom of the WiiClip looks good. All seemed lined up. On one side, the pins seem to come forward out of their sheath by less than a mm. Unfortunately, my camera doesn't do macro pictures very well. All of the IC bridges on the D2B look good and intact. I reinstalled the chip again today and same thing. The clip doesn't really "click" into place, as I've heard from others. It goes on silently but is on tight. I can grasp the clip at its base and lift the whole DVD unit.

I used the Config ISO supplied by Sylvester @ ModchipCentral, burned to a Verbatim DVD-R 8X and to a TDK DVD-R 16X, both written at 2x speed.

ModchipCentral has been very responsive, and I hope this is a silly thing that can be fixed

Uhm, in your last picture, with the two disks,

It looks like you wrote on the wrong side of the disc...

You put Config, it looks like, on the readable side.

Maybe that's why it isn't reading it?

why don't people just solder these? d2b is easy enough for a 5th grader to solder in and also I don't trust those clip things because ICs always have oxidation on the legs and I doubt anyone cleans them before installing the wiiclip.

Give me a little credit, I've been in IT for near 20 years

These Verbatims are mirror finished tops. Silver mirror on top, blue dye on bottom. If it was upside down "Verbatim" would be flipped.

As far as soldering, some people are just unable to solder, for whatever reasons. I would say that swapping a car engine is pretty easy work, but most people couldn't do that either

I had a defective chip too. I think maybe they had a bad batch because they emailed to say they received my chip and asked what I wanted to replace it with and I haven't heard from them in about 3 weeks. Maybe they're waiting for the next batch to come in
