Hardware Wii DVD drive replacement

Hello guys, this is my first post here and I'm asking for help.

I've damaged my Wii DVD drive yesterday, the console is NTSC-U and the drive - D2C, but have a chance to find quickly a new working DVD drive that is D2A or D2B from another NTSC-U console (I did not see it already, a friend of mine has it).

So, my question is: Will this DVD drive will be compatible with my Wii console? Is there a difference between Wii DVD Drives?

Thank you in advance for your answer, I really need help to get out from this situation.

As far as I am aware you can swap DVD drives as much as you like regardless of chipset/version (unlike the 360), not sure about region issues but as they are the same that should not be a problem (the fact people sell them (at vastly inflated prices) online would imply that is not an issue).

If you can get a d2b or earlier (I would look into the alt pins chips if you end up with a cut pin d2b but still go for it) for little or no effort then go for it.

Thank you for your quick answer, but I need just a few confirmation about this (especially from someone who managed to replace Wii DVD drives or got some sure information).

At first look (I've got a picture of the friend's DVD drive) it looks the same as my damaged drive.

They are only 2 connectors to the DVD, right?

you can use any drive set on any wii combination.

The drives are swappable... you can put any drive chipset into any Wii console.

The chipset on the drive is the only difference, and it's what controls the "copy protection".

You can put ANY Wii DVD drive into ANY Wii console, and it will work. 100%!

Hello again,I've got another question:

I'll receive the new DVD with soldered WIIKEY. The chip is updated with installation disc and e.t.c., but the boy doesn't know if these settings are saved on the chip or in the Wii flash memory and if the DVD with the chip is moved from one Wii to another the modcihp will work property without the need of making these settings again.

Can you please help with this and answer will it be necessary to make any kind of update/installation via disc or just put the DVD in my console?

Wiikey stores on chip, we have not been able to write to the NAND since quite some time after the last update.

As I recall though the update/tweak program does not remember the settings so it may appear like they were lost when you run it again.

The modchip stores its data in its epprom.
No problems.

Just put in a backup and youre running.

Guys, I need info about this:

1. How to make Wiikey Clone works on Wii with firmware 3.3U (I've heard something about using a program called HxD and update 1.2)

2. About Trucha Signed ISO-s . I've patched some iso's with Region Free and Brickblocker. So, are they "trucha signed" after this or not? (The ISO's are original releases)

1. HxD is a hex editor (a general purpose editor like notepad but for binary code). Unless it is a really awful clone I am not aware of issues.
Edit: my bad, I thought you were talking about the wiikey update. Chips should work fine, the worst that will happen (and you should not have to worry) is you have to hack a game to work.

2. Region free (in the original sense) as well as the brickblocker have nothing to do with trucha.
If it is the new style region free (where you need the key) then things are different, this is the better method though.

This can all be dodged by installing the homebrew channel (I seem to recall a simple disc install at hackmii, failing that grab a copy of zelda) and subsequently the GeckoUSB channel (or app if you do not want the channel).

I've heard something like "installing a Wiikey Clone on Wii with post update 3.0 will give you an useless console", here is the source: link

So, is it necessary to do the things written there or this is only for wiikey clone chips, which are not updated with installation disc and etc. If this refers only not updated chips yet then I don't need to do it cause I will receive the new DVD with the Wiikey Clone, which is updated already and will just put it in my console.

That thread just deals with the blocked header values (GCOS and one of the action replay discs as I recall), a hex editor can change them though.

The most recent updates should account for this and aside from a few clones most wiikey clones are identical once you get them installed (the wiikey is a fairly basic/common chip with a bit of custom code; hence all the clones).
