Hardware: North American Wii running 3.3U with wiikey.
Symptoms: Refuses to load any disc original or otherwise unless using Gecko OS.

Like a retard, I downloaded and tried to run the pal version of Baroque. This game included the 3.1_v2 E update. When I loaded it, it asked for a system update, which I figured was okay since my wii was version 3.2U. I ran the update, and it got to about 60% then froze. Again, like a moron I powercycled my wii. Baroque started to give me the "unable to read the disc" error, so I reburned it with the update swaped for a 3.1_v2 U this time. It ran once and gave me a black screen. Subsequent times I tried the disc it gave me the "unable to the read disc". I then updated my wiikey to 1.9s which ran, than I ran the 1.4 config disc. After I ran the config disc, all discs gave me the "unable to read disc" error. I've tried using the wiikey 1.9b recovery, but to no effect.

Now, my wii refuses to run any disc I put in there (original, trucha signed, straight backup, gamecube). It gives the error "Unable to read disc". Strangely, it runs all the games fine using Gecko OS (save the gamecube ones which aren't supported). I've tried updating to 3.3U, downgrading to 2.2U and then reupdating to 3.3U all with no effect. I don't wish to do anything drastic which may endanger my precious Homebrew Channel, which is the only way to play games now.

Any ideas?

Looks like instead of getting the "area setting" changed like in most semi-bricks somehow you mange to change your "game region" setting probably to Europe... (causing the mod-chip to fail as well) Try the AnyRegion Changer and change everything back to US (if it isn't) and reinstall the system menu. If I'm right it should fix it...

Thanks for your replies.

Have you tried the semi-brick fix discs?
Am I correct in assuming that the semi-brick fix disc will only reinstall 3.2U (which AnyRegion is capable of)?

I used the "AnyRegion_Changer", and everything was in order. I downgraded to 3.2 with it and re-saved all the region settings just in case, but there didn't seem to be any effect.

I'm thinking it's possible this whole thing went south due to a bad wiikey flash/config. Since I can't use gamecube discs, it is impossible to reflash/config the wiikey. Is there any way to boot gamecube games and bypass the region check like I can do with Gecko Os for Wii discs? Perhaps an alternate method of reflashing the chip?

hmm... GCOS might help you. You make a GCOS DVD with Wiikey config on it, actually their is GCOS discs with Wiikey config avaible to download from the internet.

TehSkeen I believe have some on them somewhere.

EDIT: Notes, this is "Gamecube" discs but they bypass any region "block" etc.

If it's my wiikey that's borked, then it's applying a region even to region-free discs. I think this could work if I could launch a Gamecube game through GeckoOS, but it refuses to launch anything but wii discs. Hrmph. I'll give it a shot though, perhaps it would work. Think I could launch GCOS directly from the homebrew channel?

As long as I can still launch Mario Kart from the HBC, I won't incur the wrath of the wife.

It might help if you run "AnyTitle Deleter" and delete that evil firmware you installed. This by the other hand RISK YOU A BRICK!

Thanks for all your help guys, I've learned a lot from toying with those programs you suggested. It appears that I used a bad config disk for my wiikey, and the reason for the first errors (before I flashed) was just the fact that I used crappy media that would only load half the time anyways. I'm such a retard. The moral of the story is: don't just do a rapidshare search for your wiikey 1.9s config disk. The crc is different from the one available here.

Exactly two days after I ordered a new wiikey, the GC booter/Gecko OS 1.06f was released allowing me to run the (proper) wiikey config disc. My system works like a charm again.

Thanks!
