What is (by your opinion) the best system for playing the old GB and GBC games?

To tell the whole story - sometime ago I bought DS lite to play with on a longer holiday (without internet and PC) and I fell in love with it. After about 15 years I discovered the magic of portable playing again. With all this playing on DS I started to be quite nostalgic and think of old orignal gameboy and games I had. So I went to my parents house and found the old gameboy and games hiden in a drawer. The only problem is that my old gameboy has a partly broken display (several rows on screen are not working). Another issue is presence of no backlight screen (I often play in the night).

What would you recommend me? To buy original Gameboy / Gameboy Color (and don't care about backlight screen) or Gameboy Advance / SP (I really like a design of SP) ?

I heard that on GB Advance you can "resize" old games to the whole screen. Does anybody know where I could find a screenshot of it, is the original graphic somehow deformed? Or if anybody can make an own picture and post it here I would really appreciate it.

Please, post your opinions...

yes it can and its not a bad picture either its not a massive jump in screensize though 160x144 for gbc and 240 x160 for gba .. they also resize on the GBA SP both gba and gba sp are switchable for gbc and gb games by using the shoulder button to flick between the two

using LAMEBOY on ds you can also use the Y button to scale up the image

I find using a ds and an ezflash 3 in 1 you can get the best of both worlds for emulation using both DS emulators and GBA emulators and use GBA EXPLOADER to load the gba roms to the 3 in 1

I'd say just pick up an old GB/GBC for cheap. That way everything is exactly as it's meant to be.

Nah, those had no blacklights - I have a GBA, and when you compare a game on it to a GBA SP, it looks much better. I would say get a GBA SP.

Laptop? HD GBC FTW! Old laptops are great for GBC, and you can have real time saves, only problem is it won't fit in your pocket, for that I perfer either the SP or the NDS (EMU) only for GB/C

You've got a couple of options:

1. GBA or GBA SP + your original cartridges. Most authentic, and would allow you to resize the screen with the L and R buttons. I personally don't like the resized screen since it makes everything wider, but it's an option. This is also the only way to get the official colorization options (the colors that the GBC adds to old black and white GB games). Since the colorization information for each game is stored directly on the GBC BIOS which has not been dumped, no emulator can use the colorizations.

2. GBA or GBA SP or GBM + flash cart + Goomba Color. No resizing options, but very good compatibility and decent speed for almost all games. Lets you have Super Game Boy borders plus GBC colors for supported dual-mode games. Also supports the first Super Game Boy palette. Has a few built-in palette sets for certain popular games. There's also a fork of Goomba (not Goomba Color) which lets you create your own palettes for games, though I have not looked into this at all.

3. NDS + GBA flash cart + Goomba Color. Same as above really, as the DS will still be working in GBA mode.

4. NDS + DS flash cart + Lameboy. Lets you resize 1.5 times with some basic filtering to make it look better. Doesn't take up the full DS resolution, which is good since it keeps the aspect ratio the same. Easier to manage saves than Goomba Color. Has support for Super Game Boy borders and the first SGB palette but not at the same time as GBC colors (again, only affects dual-mode games).

If you want the most options, get a DS, a slot-1 device to use Lameboy with, and the slot-2 EZ-V 3in1 expansion pack to use Goomba Color with.

Just small update to the topic.
Finally I have gameboy pocket and gameboy color. Right now I'm playing Warioland (my favourite game) on GB pocket it is great fun.

I have also bought some older games (mainly Zelda and Mario/Warioland games for GB and GBC) from ebay - I hope they arrive this week.
