My first PSP (1.50 or whatever homebrew runs on) broke around Christmas time last year. Never bothered sending a repair; bought a new one, intended on making it the one I upgrade, and eventually repairing the other so I could have one homebrew and one standard.

To the point, I was playing a game today and the game hung. Like the disc was scratched or something. Strange, since I took the game out of the case the hour I bought it, put it in my PSP, and never took it out. Ever. Rebooted the PSP, the loading screen hung too. That is, until I popped the disc out. Tried several other UMDs and none of them worked. A quick search on the internets told me that my lens was probably broken. Quite irate about it, since it's less than a year old, I took absolutely perfect care of it, and it breaks anyway.

I read that Sony charges about $120 for a lens replacement. For that price I might as well buy a third PSP. The device should still be under warranty, but as I probably threw the receipt away, I have no proof.

Now I guess my question is about homebrew. Been out of that scene for a while so I'm not too keen on what can and cannot be done on what model PSPs. From what I understood with my last [homebrew] PSP is that to play games off the memory stick I still needed a UMD in the device for it to read. If I were to downgrade this PSP, with its broken lens, would I still be able to do that?

Furthermore, I'm not sure if I can downgrade my model of PSP. Again, last I heard, the TA-082 (I think that's what it was called) PSP could not be downgraded without bricking the device.

Thank you.

I already read them. Nothing I read confirmed or denied that I needed a UMD in the device to run a game from the memory stick.

You don't need any umd to run iso from memory stick.

Not entirely true; GTA lags if you play without a UMD in the drive, but if your lens is busted, you have no choice.
BTW, When you start up your PSP, Does the opening sound crackle a bit?

That's what I needed to know. As long as the majority of games run relatively smoothly without a UMD in the drive, I'm happy. Guess I'm off to buy a Pandora's Battery.

Oh, and no, my sound doesn't crackle when I boot the PSP.

Ah, right. Mine does, but i guess it must be another problem. Do you know anyone else with a CFW PSP? It's best to ask before going to buy something you may only use once.

Nah. Already ordered my Pandora Battery and a bigger, 4gb memory stick. I don't even know anyone with a PSP. Except for me and my broken hacked PSP.

Thanks for the help though. I could have bought a replacement optical drive, but last time I tried manual repair I ended up destroying some other things that were important. Hence the PSP that's sitting in a box, disassembled.

I have Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories on my memory stick, no umd and they don't even think about lagging, running on 4.01 m33-2 with a 4gb lexar platinum II formatted in fat16

nothing lags since I formatted to fag16, also I am running at 333/166mhz
