Looking at the pictures, it seem spotting a counterfeit card is not easy. You can't pop open the card at the point-of-purchase.
Bricking DS will only ruin their reputation, unless they no longer plan to produce R4s and only want revenge against those profiteering from their brand/labor. Imagine, a clueless buyer who bought a fake R4 and bricked his DS, he will blame R4, and the store that sold it to him will blame anything but the fake R4, so the buyer is left with the impression the R4 did it. Very few people who buys these stuff actually knows forum like these, so in the end, they will think it was R4's fault...
R4 should just re-mass produce their cards at a lesser price, after all, they got few advantages now competing against DSTT, Edge and other similar cards. That the only way to weed out fake cards.

Actually, these gadget , given it use, are probably manufactured underground, given that otherwise, they would be sued (like Bung Enterprises - makers of Game Doctor for SNES) or raided everytime copyright infringement get discussed by US and China.Destructobot said:

Right, so now the newbfriendly R4 creators want their users to open the card and check for minor differences on it's board before they update? Great. The update better be as exciting as the Mii Plaza update for Wii then...
is there any other way to see if it is a fake without having to open up the inside of the R4 I got mine off amazon about 6 months ago and am a bit concerned I might brick my DS. I can see the differences in the pictures

The R4 Team has a Chinese/official forum? I thought they had to shut it down a longgg time ago...?

If the R4 team spent less time worrying about the competition and used ther time better to make un breakable ENCRYPTION with their loaders and release regular updates like they used to do ....all they would need to do is leave the FAKES behind with each new update rendering those who bought /sell fakes with old outdated kernels that dont run the latest games or cope with newer save sizes/states!
I really dont think that a software update would enable SDHC on current cards I would most prob need hardware modification to allow this

maby new addition would be the ability of mulitple saves would be a bonus but again its not needed!
what we REALLY ..need is the regular updates that once was ... for the prolly millions of us out there with R4's and not a$$ed about SDHC

.... I also own DSTT and ACEKARD 2 cards.... but still stick with my R4 for the most as it plays all I need it to and 2gb mem card does me fine .... its re-writable storage I have no need to carry hundreds of roms at once or music/dpgs
As above making bricker firmware will only lead to a bad BAD name with the DS OWNERS, and those out there not wise enough to visit forums such as this or read/heed the warnings out there of the fakes and just buy what they are lead to believe are genuine R4 cards .... I mean just look at the effort these Pirate/clone card makes goto to get them pretty much identical to the real R4 cards/stickers and even the box packaging I've looked at the two side by side and apart from subtle wording on the box and the obvious square slightly raised chip under the sticker of the fake they are to the untrained eye hard to tell apart unless you look pretty close .. also as above whos going to let you dismantle the card to check
So its down to us in the know to point out on forums like this and warn potential buyers of these fakes and maby get stockists of the fake cards to clearly mark them as such I know RHS point out that they are clones and others that ONLY stock genuine R4 cards to avoid confusion and problems later on for both the buyer and themselves prevent any legal action if these fakes/clones brick their beloved ds
