Tis important. The second time I took apart my old DS Lite, this happened to me. I ordered a new power switch, but I'm too lazy to install it, so I'm just going to sell it now (got the LoZ limited edition gold one yesterday.

only thing i would add is a word of caution about the two slider buttons, power and volume. When putting my ds back together for the first time I broke my power switch and needed to solder a new one on. All because the switch moved a bit and snapped the surface mounted power switch tab off

This guide is awesome I myself was able to disassemble part of ds, to check L and R buttons (because one button was working strange), too bad there is only guide for lower part of ds and not for upper, but I think that when comming to fully dissasemble Ill pass, I assessed it as too hard difficulty level. (for me)
Hey there hope one of you guys can help me. I'm trying to replace a broken ds lite case and everything went without a hitch until i had to reseat the buttons and apply the backplate. For the life of me I cannot get the buttons to stay put, the spring always dislodges the triggers and when i do get them to seat and screw on the backplate the triggers are unresponsive. I have used these pics http://www.flickr.com/photos/62647765@N00/...57594277451148/ as a reference and still can't seem to get it right =/. On top of that I guess I broke off the power nub when I was frustrated and now have to turn it off and on with a toothpick =]. Any suggestions guys? I tried every possible configuration with the spring and even resorted to using a glue gun to keep it in place, but no response so far =/.
LMAO! This is exactly what happened to me. Power Switch and all. To get the shoulder buttons to go back into place, you just have to try OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. Eventually you'll get it right. As for the switch, I say get a new switch on eBay, or sell your DSLite and buy a new one. The power switches are about $4 USD on eBay.

all the guides i've seen disassemble the whole case. i just want to replace the top shell; does it come off by just unscrewing the screws next to the screen and sliding it off? or is it more complicated than that?
It's more complicated. There's a ribbon cable that runs through one of the hinges, and you have to disconnect it from the motherboard in the bottom in order to feed it through.
Three pieces of advice (I've done this twice now as my hinge broke this weekend on my shock case - 2 weeks old.
):
1. Make a sheet of duct tape with sticky side up (several sheets overlapping) a bit larger than your ds. Use a sharpie and make an outline of your DS on the sticky side. I drew in the buttons and battery cover on mine. Every time you take out a screw, put it head-down on the duct tape sheet in the same location it came from on your DS. You'll never confuse the screws this way.
2. To keep the switches in place as you put the bottom back together, move them to the right place (down for the power, and I put the volume one in the middle) and put a piece of tape over the OUTSIDE of the switches. This will stick to the switches enough to keep them in place.
3. EXPERIMENTAL: To avoid the deadly hinge breakage, super-glue the "positioner" doohickey into the hinge. The hinges break because when you open the cover, you're pretty much pulling the back of the hinge off, and the front of the hinge takes all of the pressure...snap! If you glue all sides, the stress is spread over all sides of the hinge and it's waaaay stronger. WARNING! This does mean that you'll have to break your upper shell to get the doohickey out, and in fact it may not be possible to get it out cleanly. I would love to know if you can get a replacement. I know there are shells that include this ALL of the parts, and I guess I'll have to go that way if this case breaks, too. Also, I only did this today on my (completely) broken hinge. So far so good, though, and I think it should be fine.

My lovely daughter dropped her ds today and one of the hinges broke completely and the little metal bit inside fell out, thankfully it wasnt the side containing the top lcd ribbon or speaker wires.
Can i just get a replacement top shell or will i have to change the whole case? it still works fine but selotape doesn't stick to inside well plus its near the buttons so just tape inst really helping.

Well, in order to replace the top shell, you have to take apart the whole NDS!!
So, it's the best if you change the whole shell..and don't be afraid..It's not that scary!!
plus, you can't order just top shell, so change the whole thing!!
