Do I need to put the latest atmosphere it's only a 2017 Japanese model I haven't updated the OFW it was an eBay find at Japan model I need help and advice please before I update the OFW the last time I update one of these switches I couldn't use tin foil that was couple weeks ago so now I want to mod my new Switch without updating anything is that possible

If you don't want to update make an emunand with your current firmware version, and then you can update that emunand to version 19.0.1, which will give you good compatibility with most newer games but without the downsides of version 20. If you have issues with tinfoil I would recommend DBI, I've never had issues with it and is easy to use and has a bunch of useful features, but there's a few other options as well.

Regarding Atmosphere, whatever version that supports your current firmware version should be enough.

Those were a lot of words which will mean nothing to someone who is coming into the scene blind.

My advice is to research emuMMC, what it is and how to install it.

tmnr1992 is correct that it's recommended to use firmware 19.0.1 as an emuMMC to maintain maximum compatibility.
To run newer games (essentially anything released from June2025) you will need to patch them to run, but once you know how to do it, it's only a couple clicks of the mouse.

Anyways, one step at a time.
