Just kidding ... I just seem to do it, every once in a while, by accident ... but then again, that's my style ... The Accidental Gamer.

They've changed boosting compared to the other Mario Karts this time around.

I heard it happens when you hold your slide for a while, no additional movement required.

I'm not too sure on it, I haven't played it yet.

Aye, it works like it did in Mario Kart DS, just have to set it to manual. The only thing about the game that dissapoints me is that you cant see car stats in a 3 or 4 player game, and that Automatic & Manual is only explained in the single player mode

(We jumped into a 3 player game right from the start)

I can only mange to get blue sparks with bikes, with carts i can get blue and yellow spikes for a loooong boost. It must be possible with bikes because ghosts do it.

Any ideas?

first, you can get the boost only by setting to manual.
second , you charge the boost by time or angle (if you do a sharp turn it will charge quickly).
the bikes only have a blue boost IMO (tried it for long turns , a few times).
I think that you saw the ghosts leave the slide button ,and it looks like its just keeps charging.. i could be wrong about it.
My explanation of it , is that bikes have a speed boost while going straight (wheelie) , so they can charge a bit less than karts on turns...

I've only used manual mode with a GC controller myself but I've found:
Holding R and not steering gives you a boost
Holding R and pressing into the direction you're skidding gives you the boost faster (i.e. you're skidding round a tight right turn and hold right while skidding you'll get the boost faster than if you didn't press anything or held away from the turn)
Holding R and the direction away from the skid gives you a slower boost (i.e. right turn, holding left.)

Bikes only seem to have one boost, cars have a short blue boost and long orange one.

Bikes only have one boost because you can wheelie (flick wiimote up) at any time to gain a small speed increase at the expense of handling.

nope,if you drift round a corner it's MUCH faster then not drifting..you basically HAVE to drift/MT/wheelie on every section you can to get into the top10 boards

..take a look at the champion on n64 mario raceway..you can't make one single mistake..the champ does and i was just about to beat em when i did my mistake of missing a crucial last corner MT..0.073 seconds behind

to gain a speed boost round corners u can do one of 2 options
1) when u stay behind other players it creates less wind so u get a boost from being behind them
2) when on a bike pull a wheehly and you boost
