Croc is the next 90s mascot platformer to get a remaster

Croc_Legend_of_the_Gobbos.jpg

The classic 1990s game Croc: The Legend of Gobbos is getting a remaster. Joining the likes of Spyro, Crash, and Banjo & Kazooie, Croc will be seeing an upgraded remaster at some point. Former lead of Argonaut and series creator Jez San said that while it's very early on to announce, "Croc HD" has begun development. Croc, while it never had much staying power, the original game sold over 3 million copies, performing on-par with other beloved games back in the day.

Awkward 3d transition era games are getting remakes.... wow I am old.
This is the stuff we should be seeing that gets remade/remastered and brought into todays time.

Even games from the 2D generation could easily do with being re invented, it gets boring seeing the same rehashed shit year after year.

Not so called remasters of games that were from the console before.

Was this really necessary? :wtf:

Hope they don't ruin the experience of playing this game again by keeping the same playing controls used back then (cof, cof, Spyro?), when 3D games (on PSX/PS One) didn't were the best on that matter.

One of my first Sega Saturn games. Still own it!

It was like what you get if you took Crash Bandicoot and gave it the controls of a 90's-era Resident Evil game. Ah, the memories...

Too bad for them then, git gud kids. People nowadays can't handle nothing. I expect a authentic 90s experience, just like how i remembered.
I have a feeling they will make the controls easy, which is where most of the game's challenge is.

The original game is very hard in its later levels, I am not sure how fitting that is for today's audience.
I remember the Saturn cover, but that's about it for me when it comes to Croc. I might give it a chance now on the Saturn.

Oh, it was also on PlayStation and PC: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croc:_Legend_of_the_Gobbos

The PS1 version looks slightly better, imo.

And there was a Game Boy Color game as well:

Gameplay is a bit off, I don't like what I'm seeing.

That game boy color version makes, what shall we say, a limited amount of sense, but it is cool to hear chiptune versions of the music.

I've played and beaten the game, 100%ed it in fact back in the day. I've also played and beaten a number of other notoriously difficult 80s and 90s games. Croc's difficulty doesn't come from the level design. Its the shitty controls, the camera and even ledge detection. Even compared to other more competent examples of tank controls in platforming (such as Jumping Flash for instance), it was really bad even for the standards of the time period it was released in. I would very much hope these issues are all addressed if the game ever gets a remaster.

Same I guess, but it would make it very easy.
Yes it probably would trivialize a lot of it. But that's my point. The game's difficulty isn't from how the levels and platforms are constructed. But rather how poorly the game functions. This kind of "difficulty" is not a welcome sort. There are plenty of extremely challenging games out there, far moreso than Croc, that actually have functional controls and cameras.

Regarding the underwater sections for instance. Pretty much all of these are just wide linear tubes with a couple of minor obstacles that would be a cinch to get past if they were inserted into a game with competent swimming controls and camera system. If made in Mario 64's engine for instance, they'd be a lot easier. Mario 64 itself by comparison has more intricately designed underwater sections, and its own underwater areas would be made at least 10x more horrible if you inserted them into the Croc engine.

I don't think Croc would be a COMPLETE cakewalk near the end if they redid the controls. Though it would indeed make the game considerably easier. But as it stands, it's necessary. The game did not control well when it released, and it would be a complete embarrassment if a remaster released in such a state today.

It would be awesome if they fixed that. But that would crank down the difficulty of the original. So it would be best to have some kind of original mode.

I think they prob will too. But a original mode is nice to have too.
