Why do you hack your consoles (except piracy)?

for me, it's fun to mess around trying to make the hack work. I have most if not all the hackeable consoles. I bought a ps4 just to hack it, only played spiderman and I own like five games( spiderman included with miles morales and god of war).i have 2 hack switches that i dont use (only use switch lite).have a ps5 seal still in package with a copy of rachet and clank.waiting for a stable hack release. probably ill get god of war ragnarok.this one is quiete questionable but ill buy one of the pokemon version and ill download the game and a save data of the opposite version then transfer my favorite pokemon over to start my adventure with the pokemons i like.

For the Switch overclocking, 60FPS and higher resolution mods and Retroarch are perfectly good reasons to hack it. Save editing is either cheating or time saving depending on your opinion. Region locking is an issue on older systems. In the past, hacked consoles were good media players but these days almost everyone has a smart TV.
anti region lock is piracy :P

Porn?

Also backup and/or decrypt saves (was wonderful to be able to pass FF7R save from PS4 to PC), add functionality (example: my PS TV can run almost every Vita game), abandon reliance on optical media, restore online functionality (ex Xbox), better performance (ex: new 3ds patches for old 3ds games), game mods, glory of Satan ofc, etc

well, there's custom themes, emulators, the amazing homebrew games that people have made, and being able to dump all my physical games.

Only for fan translations (and region free for older systems).
I usually buy the games I play those fan translations as well.

I'd never hack a system purely for piracy.

I was always poor growing up, and video games were my biggest form of entertainment. I would maybe get one game for my birthday, possibly two on a good year, and maybe four or so on Christmas.

I literally chose some of my friends based on which game console they had, so we could trade and borrow from each other.

Used to watch Nickelodeon game shows where kids would win like a shopping spree at a KB Toys, and just imagined what it would be like to have ALL OF THEM GAMES.

A couple of my friends were rich, and one of them had, no bullshit, over 100 NES games back in 1990. Type of kid who had the BIG TMNT playset and never played with it. I was so jelly.

Once I got my first GBA flash card, I didn't even own my own computer, so it was strictly for piracy. But, when I finally got my own PC, I become an eHoarder. I just wanted everything, even if I would never play it, just so *I* could be the cool kid who had all the games.

No one has actually ever been impressed with my digital pirated collection for more than a few minutes, so I guess it was a failed effort.

But, if the zombie apocalypse comes, I am set for games for the rest of my life.

At first, I hacked my PAL Wii (purchased in 2006 - OEM component cable) in 2018 (so very late), when my last CRT screen died, to be able to use Nintendont and force my GC PAL discs to 480p, as 480i is horrible on an HD screen (then with Swiss Wii -when Nintendont can't force 480p with some games -like all RE-, after purchasing an Gecko SD adapter)

Then I discovered the homebrew community was very active (USBloaderGX and the 480p fix, WiiSX, Not 64, Wiituka, etc.), it's simply a great enjoyment to be able to play all my games with good picture quality, all in one device, on my couch. (I'm not too much into Dolphin and such, that's not the same than playing on real hardware).

When I don't own the games, I do not consider this as piracy, as there is no other way to play them.

- Original disc prices are over the top and totally crazy.
- I still have all my consoles and devices (from NES to Wii, and a collection of hundreds of original cartridges and discs -about 300). But everything is PAL (480i GC and 50Hz NES/SNES/N64 are a no-go today), my N64 is composite only (the output is horrible)
- I still buy retail GC/Wii discs when I find them at a fair price (but it's rather hard nowadays).
- Hacking allows to play games that have never been released in Europe (Baten Kaitos Origins, I say your name)

I mostly hack my stuff out of boredom, and then find as many homebrew ports to install as possible, and eventually get to overclocking so I can run even more, and finally hardmodding so I can run EVEN MORE.

Mostly because I can and also to remove the limits imposed by the restrictions of the stock software to allow the full utilization of the hardware.

Archiving save data mostly, but I have to say, making my Switch into a fully functional Linux desktop computer is pretty awesome. Until recently, the Switch had better support for Linux than my Lenovo laptop.

Homebrew scene does things which are sometimes out of this world. For example, sd2vita for the vita. A PS vita memory card 64gb which I brought before when my wallet was crying. Now, those things go for joke prices.
