Nintendo eShop closing down in Russia, limited to only re-download pre-owned titles

Untitled.png

Russian customers that have been using the Nintendo eShop for their gaming needs won't be able to make any new purchases or transactions using the service, beginning on May 31st, 2023.

Nintendo of Europe started sending emails to publishers, to which some websites like Game Developer caught upon. In said email, Nintendo mentions an overall halt in sales for Russia through their eShop service. This isn't the first time Nintendo does something like this on Russian territory, as last year Nintendo stopped product shipments to the country. With the current cease of sales in the eShop, Russian customers will only be able to redownload already owned titles from the eShop, but they won't be able to make any new purchases. Nintendo will also delete all kinds of payment information from Russian customers that have a Nintendo Account (like credit card and PayPal information) for privacy reasons.

Excerpt from Nintendo of Europe's email to publishers said:
As a result of the economic outlook, Nintendo of Europe has decided to wind down operations of its Russian subsidiary. As part of our efforts to honor preceding commitments to our customers in the Russian market, the Russian version of Nintendo eShop will be set to offer limited service.

As of May 31, 2023, and for the foreseeable future, Russian customers with an existing Nintendo Account will be able to redownload digital content that they have previously purchased. It will not be possible to make any new purchases or use download codes within Nintendo eShop in Russia.

While Nintendo cites the "economic outlook" as the reason for the closure of the eShop, it's almost certain it is tied or a consequence to the current on going conflict in which Russia is involved. It could also be related to the fact that Russia made piracy legal in the country since March, 2022, after several gaming (and other) companies started making sanctions effective for the region.

So these are just digital downloads they cannot buy. Physical option would still exist I imagine!?
Nintendo stopped ship physical copy to Russia after Russian invasion of Ukraine started in Feb 2022.

Russians would have to import physical games from Play Asia and other online stores that willing to ship to Russia.

Excuse to betray customers shouldn't be tolerated no matter who it is targeted at.

Crime committed to punish law-abiding civilians.

Also hate crime against minority. It's a BS political move.
Excuse me, what? Russians are *not* a minority in Russia, and the incentive here is monetary, not based on ethnicity.
You mean how many law-abiding civilians will now stop playing Switch games?

I think they won't, they will just migrate to US and then start buying game again. It's a free to buy game country.
It’s Russia, dude. It’s the Mecca of piracy. Switching countries won’t work when your debit/credit card aren’t working. It’s a set of unfortunate circumstances that hits both consumers and Nintendo, no doubt - given the opportunity, I assure you Nintendo would like to make money rather than not make it.

Russians buying from eshop is not a minority? You have to define minority then. I am pretty sure what is call minority in USA has a very much larger number. Millions and millions more.

not true, they are like this totally privately, when you meet them somewhere outside their country or anywhere. It doesn't matter if they are brainwashed or plain dumb and naive, they are really supporting putin
Guess which country have perhaps around 50% of the people that hate their leaders.

A whole lot of Russians have been jailed for protesting or attempting to protest the invasion, and militarized resistance from inside of Russia is really beginning to gain traction too. You can't blame the general population for what the Kremlin is choosing to do, but I think you can argue that they should've seen it coming. Putin had been growing progressively more unhinged and self-centered for a long while.

This what you said is that we can't blame anyone because there will be always some excuse. Yes, there is some resistance, but I'm talking about majority of Russian people that really supports putin from heart. if you went there and ask someone directly without any cameras they will say in 90% that they support putin. That's the point. So not selling anything at best to these "normal people" is good move.

Nintendo has really been going off the rails all throughout this year and last.
It's like they're speedrunning being generally hated by the public.
Considering that we've only just not hit the halfway point of 2023, I'm pretty concerned of as to what else they've got planned to destroy...

Pirates don't really care if all they do is pirate
I'm going to be honest and say I have a large PS4 games collection and never bought a single game or own any originals. I even got my PS4 for free from a freind when he got a PS5. For the Switch I bought crash bandicoot and that's my only original.
During the Xbox360 and PS3 era I bought quite a few originals, some from the Xbox and PS3 stores - but my consoles were banned due to being modded. When these games companies started banning me and not letting me get access to things I had paid for I just thought what's the point of buying anything from them, I'll just get it for free in future. I don't blame pirates at all, you do what you have to do.
As for DRM in games - I am not a fan of that and when I see a game that's had that DRM removed by a talented hacker I feel a warm glow all over.

Inevitably the Russians will still get their games from elsewhere, there will be people selling them and modding consoles all over Russia and a new generation of hackers will be born or be forced into hacking. The only ones that will lose out in this are the games companies, PSN, and a few innocent people that were buying the games being forced into piracy.

”Playing Nintendo” is not a protected category. This is not a hate crime.
That's the line they're telling the public in order to remain in the West's good graces.
The west isn’t exactly on the best of terms with Russia. If what you say is true (it isn’t), wouldn’t doing the opposite put them in an even better position? Y’know, in support of Ukraine? Like half the brands out there?

Man, oh man - it’s an eShop conspiracy.

Which side is NoA on? Left or Right?

Only Disney has come out. NoA is still unknown.
Maybe they are not an any side or care about politics. This is the trouble with some people that are on one side or another, they seem think everyone else thinks the same way that they do and have the viewpoint that "if you're not with us you're against us", when most people literally just don't care and want to be left alone to get on with their own stuff.

I also don't think NoA would be involved ( at least not initially ) but I may be very wrong. It's hard to predict when a company would suddenly be woke. Did you see bud light as woke until recently?
