Nintendo issues rebootless update for firmware 16.0.3

dsdadsdsa.png

An incredibly minor update was sent out to Nintendo Switch systems in the form of a rebootless update for firmware 16.0.3. The exciting content within this slight patch is just a simple change to Nintendo's bad words list, including some removals. For players in Japan, "adhd" is no longer marked as a bad word. Atmosphere and all homebrew should continue to function, and the current firmware version number remains unchanged.

more recently the r-word came from mental retardation. Soon enough you'll surely have more.
The word retard (I'm not going to self-censor myself) did come from mental retardation in English, but in other European languages the word "retard" is also used for different reasons albeit not really used that much (maybe except in French since that means "delay" and similar definition in Portuguese, and the Spanish have "retardado/da" for slow development of their age, etc).

If people want to talk about issues they can't censor a word and expect a real discussion to happen. But a real discussion in 2023? That can't be right!

ADHD is a slur? As a person who has it (but overgrown it) this is kinda confusing. You would've expected something more vulgar or something, but yeah. Unexpected for sure.

You have to keep in mind that Nintendo is a "family friendly" company. It is probably more likely that "adhd" "aspergers" "autism" "mental retardation" are terms to be used in the context of insulting people than it is to facilitate a "family friendly" atmosphere. My impression was that Nintendo wanted to both protect those with ADHD and to keep the gaming environment light, but finally realized that they were censoring people with these issues, and decided that it was better to let them have a chance to talk about it, even if it means letting mean kids hurl them around as insults.

Has anyone censored "blind"? Lol. That would be ⠊⠝⠞⠑⠍⠞⠇⠑⠗⠛⠕⠠⠙⠊⠇⠽⠒⠥⠠⠑⠗⠑⠕⠽.

Duh. I know they are a family friendly company lmfao.

I don't think they censored blind, but i do know one time they censored spastic in Mario Party 8, so there is that.

In Japan, there are people who falsely say, "I have ADHD," in order to gain the sympathy of many people and satisfy their desire for approval.
Because of them, people with genuine ADHD are viewed badly and subject to slander.

I have never personally encountered that. Is this in the game?

That's a harsh thing to those people.
can't they, like, have some sign of approval or something...?

Twitter/Instagram/youtube/niconico live broadcast/TwitCasting/ used by Japanese people
In this space, some immoral people make false statements that they have mental illnesses or injuries in order to satisfy their desire for approval.
Because of insane people, people with ADHD and disabilities are seen as bad
You are being slandered in online games and in the real world.

Oh, I see. In Japanese society, I don't generally see this happening. I do not consider SNS to be "the real world". So maybe it is a difference in opinion.

Not just in japan, most, if not all, asian country still have lot of misunderstanding about mental disorder and a lot of families there may even consider them as "a stain to remove from their family tree"
Being autistic myself, and having a coupld of other disorders, i find it horrible and just cant imagine what my life would have been if i was born there...

I dont know if its true, but i've heard horror stories of people with a mental disorder in middle-eastern countries who were all diagnosed the same thing no matter the symptoms, they were mad. They didnt have any real diagnosis aside that, but they had the cure to it, which apparently looked a lot like torture.
Dont believe the shit people say on the internet. ADHD is not a "stain on family tree" in Japan lmao.

You should really try to visit Japan before adopting bullshit opinions that you found on the internet. First, ADHD isn't Asperger's aren't "slurs", and the infrastructure of school systems and public facilities are very accommodating to the disabled.
Stop being reasonable on the internet. People need their half truths and fantasies.

I also live in Quebec, and I have never seen or heard someone using the word "gai" with the meaning of happy. I know it's probably one of the definitions in the dictionary, but it's just not used in that way, probably for fear of being misunderstood with the other popular meaning. If people mean "happy", they would use "content" or heureux"... mostly "content" in Quebec.

Do Quebecians enjoy content content?
