Hello everyone,

First time poster here. I decided to make this post since I am having issues with my Wii U. Currently, my Wii U will not boot up to the main menu. It stays stuck on the Wii U logo indefinitely.

There are a few things to note about my console. The console is the black 32 gb model. I believe it was bought during the 2012 holiday season (release) as we were expecting to play Pikmin 3 before it got delayed. The system has never been modded in any fashion. It was not the most heavily played console, and I can't even give a good estimate of when it was last used (at least more than 3 years).

I have already tried doing the UDPIH, however it does not seem to be working. When using the second recovery menu, I get a white screen with some blue lines (see attached image). I believe this is similar to what @fadafwet described in his post. I was able to get the logs from the system, which I have attached to this post. Any idea what the issue may be and how to fix it? Any help would be much appreciated.

Never mind about the game pad! I paired it in the recover menu, seems to be working just fine now. :D
I was about to launch the browser and the Tiramisu installer, but I backed out so I can take an image on my eMMC SD card before continuing since it's in a pretty good working state. Despite those remaining broken titles.

Try to pair the gamepad in the recovery menu
Yup haha! I just remembered seeing that option and tried it, thanks! :)

I took an new image of the SD card. Running nand dumper right too, just to have all sorts of backups available, because I continue with Tiramisu install. Reinstalling all those titles was super tedious, don't want to repeat that again lol. I also ordered a High Endurance 32GB SanDisk SD card from amazon, should get it tomorrow, and I'll use that as the proper eMMC replacement before I put everything back together properly. Should I be concerned about those remaining 3 broken titles?

I can't believe I've made it this far, thank you all so much for the help.

Did you look up what these titles are? I am not at home right now, so can't check.

There is this online title database and you can just search it for the title I'd, you get from the directory

All good! I did look them up, they are:

0005001010062100: Software/Data Transfer
0005001010066000: ECO process
000500301001310A: Nintendo TVii

I suppose I just avoid using these apps for now?

Disable the standby functions and then try to rename the folder of the title and then try to reinstall it.
Awesome that worked! I disabled the standby functions, moved the problematic files around with wupclient, and was able to install those last 3 titles! :toot:

When I booted it back up, it wanted to do an update, but looks like worked okay. Running the nand dumper again now.

Good job, well done!
I think you can now try to delete the moves directories of the titles you just reinstalled.

Just remember to not attempt a factory reset or the System transfer (as this would also trigger a factory reset)

EDIT: you could also try to move the corrupted directories to a new folder in the root of the mlc, so they don't get in the way, so they don't get in the way if you ever decide to delete the affected titles. (if quotas don't get in the way ofc, but just try it either it works or it doesn't)

Thanks so much for your help! I was able to delete those "backup" folders of those last titles I installed.

Yes! will definitely not forget this. Good to know about the system transfer too.

you could also try to move the corrupted directories to a new folder in the root of the mlc, so they don't get in the way, so they don't get in the way if you ever decide to delete the affected titles. (if quotas don't get in the way ofc, but just try it either it works or it doesn't)
I tried moving them out of their current location, but I just can't manage to move these last directories. This is my latest filtered mlc_check. Probably okay for now?

I just installed BOTW using WUP Installer GX2, it's all running great. :D

Thanks again for all your help @SDIO and @V10lator, not only am I happy to have a working Wii U that cost me nearly nothing (but my time), but it's so satisfying to bring this otherwise dead console back to life.

Actually, I just noticed that it gets stuck on "Preparing..." when I go into Data Management. It doesn't seem to freeze or crash though, it just hangs here indefinitely. I haven't dove into it much yet, but I suppose I should try deleting some stuff?

It sounds like data management scans one of the corrupted folders for garbage to me. From looking at your attachment it seems to be this folder: /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102300/user/corrupted but I guess that's inside of a quota, so you can't move it away from there?

@SDIO Looks like the first case of a corrupted folder we can't move away... I'm out of ideas here but you're more clever than me, so what about you?

If you can't move the subfolder try the parent. Escalate it one level at a time
While this sounds like a good plan on first glance I guess Nintendo has this save folder in a quote as the Wii U will brick without it, so not sure if moving the parent folder (and with this the whole quota) will be a good idea...

Anyway, from this I got the idea to move the corrupted folder futher into the quota, so move it into some subfolder(s) and see if that helps.

Moving the save folder of a particular title should be be safe
Post automatically merged:

Maybe you can move it to some folder and remove the permissions on that folder. But I would only try this inside the save folder of a title. Without the permissions it might fall more cleanly and the data management will carry on. But I never tried that

@SDIO You're correct as always. I assumed a system title here but it's Wii Fit U. Why the hell did Nintendo add a quota here?

//EDIT: Maybe we could just remove that quota (FSA does have API functions for that) to move that corrupted folder away?

If qoutas are like hard partioned areas with their own FAT/MFT or however it is called there, then removing the quota could work and could get rid of these pesky folders. Good finding.
Let's try that and see what happens.

I guess Nintendo added the quotas that no rouge game could allocate all the memory or to make sure a safe would never fail, because the memory got completely filled up by something else.
Maybe it is also to protect the file system from corruption if something happens during the save, so only the quota corrupts and not the whole FS

With the help of chatgpt, I've whipped up this class that I'm running in my wupclient.py, to get some better visibility on the directory.
Python:
class TraverseAndListDirectories:
    class TraverseAndListDirectories:
        def __init__(self, wupclient):
            self.w = wupclient
        def traverse_and_list(self, path):
            if self.w.cd(path) == -1:
                return
            items = self.w.ls(return_data=True)
            for item in items:
                if item['is_file']:
                    print(f"File: {path}/{item['name']}")
                else:
                    directory_path = f"{path}/{item['name']}"
                    self.traverse_and_list(directory_path)

w = wupclient()
traverser = TraverseAndListDirectories(w)
traverser.traverse_and_list("/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000")

This is the results:
cd /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000
cd /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/meta
File: /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/meta/iconTex.tga
File: /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/meta/meta.xml
File: /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/meta/saveinfo.xml
cd /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/user
cd /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/user/corrupted
cd /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/user/corrupted/common
cd error : path does not exist (/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/user/corrupted/common)

That last directory which "doesn't existing" is the problematic one.

I've tried doing the following moves, which all have failed

w.mv("/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/user/corrupted/common", "/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/user/")
moving /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/user/corrupted/common to /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/user/ failed : 0xfffcffea

w.mkdir("/vol/storage_mlc01/sys/title/00050010/10066000/corrupted", 0)
w.mv("/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/user/corrupted/common", "/vol/storage_mlc01/sys/title/00050010/10066000/corrupted")
moving /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/user/corrupted/common to /vol/storage_mlc01/sys/title/00050010/10066000/corrupted failed : 0xfffcffde

w.mv("/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/user/corrupted", "/vol/storage_mlc01/sys/title/00050010/10066000/corrupted")
moving /vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000/user/corrupted to /vol/storage_mlc01/sys/title/00050010/10066000/corrupted failed : 0xfffcffde

Tying to move this common directory, or any of its parent directories further up the directory tree fails with similar error.

This sounds promising! but seems like wupclient would need to be updated to support calling this api?

Try creating a directory in /vol/storage_mlc01/corrupted and then try to move ol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000 there.

Maybe I will take a look at the wupclient later, but I can't test it atm

By the way, I forgot to mention; I could not create a directory like "/vol/storage_mlc01/corrupted"
I had to make directories like "/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/corrupted" and "/vol/storage_mlc01/sys/corrupted"

Then, files would only let themselves be moved from across the same parent directory, ie.
I could not move files to /usr/corrupted from /sys, and vice-versa.

====================

I checked my main WiiU today and I get this one file from MLC Checker:
ReadFile;/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/boss/00050010/10066000/user/common/80000002/killer/didx.db;-0003001B

I guess it's starting to fail? I was thinking of waiting with the nandaid install until that happened, but I guess it's already happened.

@axmccx Either SDIO or me will give you a modified wupclient + instructions how to solve your issue "soon". Please be patient untill then.

@skawo Respect the quota borders, see
Another thing which might be worth to note is that @SDIO and me where able to identify the following quotas on the MLC:
Code:
/vol/storage_mlc01/sys
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/boss/00050010/10040200/user/80000020
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/boss/00050010/1004c200/user/80000020
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/boss/00050010/1004d200/user/common
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/boss/00050030/10012200/user/80000020

/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/boss/00050030/10016200/user/80000020
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/nsec
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050010/10040200/meta
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050010/10040200/user/80000020
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050010/10040200/user/common
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050010/1004a200/meta
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050010/1004a200/user/common

/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050030/1006d200/meta
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050030/1006d200/user/common
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/system/acp
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/system/act
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/system/boss
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/system/fpd
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/system/nim
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/system/no_delete
/vol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/system/pdm
This still needs a bit of confirmation but I think the data is correct. Now why is this worth to note? Cause you can't move folders past quota borders.

//EDIT: More modern data shows btw that it's possible that each save folder for a title has its own quota. So @skawo keep this in mind and @axmccx this is where we will try to attack the system to fix your issue, we just need time to figure out the details. ;)

You're both awesome, I'll gladly wait for a fix. :)

Try creating a directory in /vol/storage_mlc01/corrupted and then try to move ol/storage_mlc01/usr/save/00050000/10102000 there.
I tried this too, but wasn't successful.
