E3 2023 has officially been canceled

asdsa,l;vf (1).png

After years of not taking place, 2023 was supposed to be the glorious return of E3. That is no longer the case, as the ESA has just officially canceled E3 2023. Despite PAX organizer Reedpop taking over the event, game companies kept adamantly announcing that they would be skipping E3, with Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, SEGA, Ubisoft, and Tencent all pulling out months before the event was set to take place. For now, it looks like most will be showcasing their upcoming games in their own digital event, or in the recently established Summer Games Fest.

The Golden age of E3 was during the 90s when PS1 was king. Then early 2000s when PS2 was a new king. Anything after that were just meh at best. Oh yeah the PS4 vs Xbox1 thing was pretty great too.

I miss the days of the big press conferences with the crazy reveals, but I’ve long accepted that the industry’s moved past that time. Might as well just go ahead and put E3 out of its misery altogether at this point.

Shit. It is sad, really. The ones saying "it was about time" and shit like that, clearly did not grew up waiting for this magnificent event every year. Yes, the last years were dissapointing but, ladies and gentleman, this is (was) the biggest videogame extravaganza that ever took place in the planet earth. It was just awesome. This is really sad.

E3 never had a point though. The Oscars are actors circlejerking themselves to themselves. That's the whole point. It's marketed by actors, for actors, and only actors are in attendance.

E3 is by the industry, for the industry, and only the industry (except for like the last... one or something pre-COVID) was in attendance. Who cares about it? It's nothing. Literally nothing.

It is weird how early Nintendo figure out that streaming was the way to go.

So, the only similar event Is the Game Awards, right?
The game awards and what preceded it were never good though.

That said there is still the Tokyo Games Show (TGS) https://expo.nikkeibp.co.jp/tgs/2022/jp/
and Cologne Games Show aka Gamescom in Germany.
https://www.gamescom.global/en

The latter held in August, the former in September a few weeks after E3 so usually was a good place to see some gameplay for what might have been announcement and prerendered nonsense. Don't know what will happen with E3 gone for the former and if they will get notable announcements from non European companies.

Whether we will see anything at PAX (penny arcade expo, was presumably a reason they were tapped to try to save this and does have a notable closed spinoff in pax dev as well, and has seen some announcements and interesting things over the years), magfest or south by southwest ( https://www.sxsw.com/conference/game-industry/ , though with it happening weeks ago and nothing much of note coming out then eh, is on Chary's doorstep though so maybe next time), or maybe some of the smaller conferences (or possible comicon taking up some slack) I do not know.

Working in the industry was a fig leaf before then -- if you worked at gamestop or got an article published as an outside writer on anything vaguely well known you could squeak your way in to at least the later days.

As far as not having a point then I will dispute that one for some years ago as it did benefit having a centralised thing (see Microsoft going to CES to announce the xbox and the eyebrows that raised). That said the time was it Konami went for a premade stream it was pretty much done, some might even go further back and note when Blizzcon got big*, companies also complaining about pointless excess and cost (it is in LA after all) for years before then.

*when that was I don't now but might as well have the classics and while I might not know when it spelled the end of I will go with it for a no later than.

As someone pointed out youtube killed E3 just like home consoles killed arcades just like cell phones killed.....you get the picture. I wouldnt be surprised if stores shut down and everything is downloaded digitally in the coming years. Its getting to the point where everything is done at you're fingertips at the comfort at you're own home.

I am really saddened by this news...

E3 was always a very wholesome moment for me, it was that time of year when all the gamers got together to watch it, it didn't matter if you were a fan of Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft, you were there to watch it, heck, I even remember the days when I kept talking to my school friends and we got together to watch everyone together, we dreamed of going there someday.

I will miss it a lot.

Internet and instant/direct communication killed the need for conventions.
We now get convenience, but no more concentrated hype.
It really was the "Christmas" of gamers, where we all expected the "next big thing" to pop up.

It's a different generation thing. Eary 2000s before internet were just great fun, mainly becasue I was there as well. Also you couldn't get any infos on new games from anywhere else apart the gaming magazines that were there doing coverage.

It was an experience, the games, the shows, the booth babes (yeah sue me. I like them), the after parties. Oh yeah the galons of water I had to drink to combat the heat too. You also get a bunch of free stuff, just because you have the press badge on you lol.
