E3 2023 has officially been canceled

asdsa,l;vf (1).png

After years of not taking place, 2023 was supposed to be the glorious return of E3. That is no longer the case, as the ESA has just officially canceled E3 2023. Despite PAX organizer Reedpop taking over the event, game companies kept adamantly announcing that they would be skipping E3, with Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, SEGA, Ubisoft, and Tencent all pulling out months before the event was set to take place. For now, it looks like most will be showcasing their upcoming games in their own digital event, or in the recently established Summer Games Fest.

I'll miss the hype and excitement of E3. Especially the big three trying to outdo each others conferences. So many timeless moments. It truly was the gamers Christmas.

I understand why it's been cancelled but replacing the event with streams randomly scattered throughout the year just isn't the same.

E3 used to be like the best event nobody was allowed to go to. But holy lord, the last few before the pandemic were just awful.

Shameful to see it fall so far. Given how the platform holders are being, though, maybe it's for the best. Not that I am happy about the outcome in any way.

E3 in the end became nothing but announcing games that wouldn't release for 3+ years or to reveal """""gameplay""""" that was so heavily doctored and sexed up and fake that the final product never resembled it.

It's sad because it used to be good but it became such a shadow of itself

What changed? I loved e3 back in the day of PS3/PS4/Xbox 360/Xbox one announcements and I attended several of them but haven't kept up last couple years so didn't know it had gone downhill. I even snuck into to Sony presentation one year as it was walking distance from where I was living. That was fun got to see some quantic dreams announcement for beyond 2 souls or maybe Detroit become human can't remember, wow that was a long time ago.

Since Nintendo went with their Nintendo Direct formula E3 has been dying, Sony soon followed.
Exactly like what's the point of the E3 if they can just drop their own showcase on youtube without any logistic issue. Plus, they can do as many announcements as they like through out the year which I think keep the hype up. Nintendo took 4 or more Directs to annonce first Tears of the kingdom development, drop a bunch of trailers, the release date, and the recent gameplay video followed by the switch oled collector edition, same for Pokemon SV. Also, several states of play were exclusively dedicated to Hogwart legacy. And all these games beat sales record. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The video game business is very different from the early 2000's especially with Youtube and also Twitch which allows even more visibility (+ free advertising) to the soon-to-be-released game.

Economically speaking this is better for the studios/editors instead of one big announcement every year, ig.

It's always sad to see something that was part of our history falling hard like that...
We don't want it to fade away forever, but we still don't want to support it...
Reminds me of churches in North America :)

That's what I wanna know, hopefully it comes back. as mediocre as the last couple of E3's were, for me it's still big part of gaming to be gone like that.
Well... to me was pretty meh.
But it sure was interest reading about Shoshinkai and E3 reports in 90s and early to mid 00's magazines.
Personally, I don't think it was that relevant.
