Dolphin emulator is officially coming to Steam

steamannouncementheader.jpg

The Dolphin developers teased some weeks ago a hint about Dolphin possibly coming to the Steam store in the nearby future, and today, this tease has been confirmed officially by the dev team through a blog post on the Dolphin website.

The emulator is still not available though, despite the store page for it existing, as the store front only details the current release date for the emulator, which only says "Q2 2023". The dev team mentions that this is due to how Steam works currently, but surely the emulator shouldn't be that far off from the official release.

It is currently unknown what features will the Dolphin emulator on Steam will include, as it wasn't mentioned in the post, though many users would like to see save cloud storage possible through the Steam app. Steam Deck accessiblity will most likely be one of the features as well, but we have yet to see.

I 100% doubt that they will put your ISOs on the cloud.
They can't and wouldn't. Not only for legal reasons, but also because Steam Cloud has a storage allocation that wouldn't allow for this. That's why I didn't say so.
RetroArch is a frontend using cores and its release model on Steam is handled in an entirely different way than a standalone emulator would be. That's not really an applicable precedence since Dolphin won't have "cores" as DLC.

The Cease and Desist jokes are so tired. RetroArch has been on steam for years with no issues. As for the benefits to this over Dolphin standalone, cloud saves immediately jump to mind, but I'm sure it will make network play much easier than the current implementation as well as just getting it in front of more people.

Oh yeah, and steam deck too. Not that you couldn't use it before, but now you don't have to go through any rigmarole.

Installing Dolphin on a mac should be easier now, tried it once, total fail

There's plenty of emulators on every major official console and PC store right now, many of them not even made by the company that owns the emulated system. Like Konami's Castlevania collection. The trick is most of these stores only sell emulators bundled with roms that the publisher has rights too, but that is purely a choice by the platform holder, not a legal necessity. Most don't want you to be able to easily plug in infinite free games on their device if they can help it. Google and Valve are somewhat unique in not particularly caring.

Kudos on the Dolphin team's part for releasing their emulator on Steam which is similar to the rollout of retroArch on Steam... Nintendo can issue all the "cease and desist" letters they want, but last time I checked, emulation is considered legal in the US court of law as long as no confidential/proprietary/copywritten source material from the original console was being used for the emulator to function.

More than likely not, as RetroArch, already available on Steam, also supports Dolphin cores. Plus, you can use the emulator almost completely legitimate, save that any warranties will be voided when dumping game discs (but since the GameCube and Wii are already quite old, who cares?).

What a time to be alive. Just after I set up Dolphin on my Steam Deck, they make the process even easier. I'm quite hopeful that they'll add a standard controller configuration as well.

Might be poorly worded, but it's not an incorrect conclusion.
Nintendo's IP, trademark, and copyrights aren't being infringed in any way here.

There is really nothing they can do about Dolphin existing on another platform.
that is true, but it do is linked to nintendo as you can do copyright infrigement with it toward big N

I was wrong about this. I had no idea the way the Wii bit of Dolphin function relied on its inclusion of the Wii's common key in its code. I don't think this is good or smart and is probably why this is now not happening (at least not anytime soon).
