Steam dropping support for Windows 7 and 8 starting on 2024

1680015397185.jpeg

Windows 7 and Windows 8 both met their dire ends on January 10th, 2023, with Microsoft ending support for both operating systems on that day, focusing entirely on Windows 10 and Windows 11 going forward. It was only expected that other kind of software and/or services would follow suit and also drop support for those operating systems.

Steam is also dropping support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 starting on January 1st, 2024. The Steam Client will stop running on those two Windows versions, encouraging their user base to update to a more recent version of Windows, Windows 10 or Windows 11. Steam cites that the main reason for the dropped support is for the reliance on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which also doesn't work on older versions of Windows, as well as relying on security updates which only exist starting in Windows 10.

Here's Steam's official statement from their website:

Windows 7 and Windows 8 Support

As of January 1 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. After that date, the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.

The newest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.

just randomly downloaded FL studio on Wine, did nothing to try and increase compatibility, clicked on the EXE and installed exactly like Windows.
it ran flawlessly

why u lying bro?
It's stuff like Pro Tools and Adobe software that has no support natively or via WINE, you know, the industry standard stuff that keeps us on Windows. There's stuff like Reaper, Ardour (and Mixbus), Blender, DaVinci Resolve, Lightworks, GIMP, LMMS, etc. that all work natively or via WINE but they don't have the same market share or compatibility (or workflow).
That's just objectively untrue. There's some stuff like adjusting sample rate and bit depth that require either using commands OR modifying a file. Linux will never be as user friendly as Windows until they make everything lime that doable through a GUI.

I know right? That 1 million+ new users this year is just too little.

Please list that number beside the number of people using Windows. Over 600 Linux distros and still sitting at under 3% of desktop PC users running a single one of them. Lmfao. Fail. Try again.

Hi! You must live under a rock with Patrick Star. There are SEVERAL user-friendly linux distros out these days, with some having a similar windows-like layout for familiarity. Linux Mint (Cinnamon version), Ubuntu, Puppy, Manjaro, etc are just a few user-friendly distros that come to mind.

Hi! Sure thing, chumbly. Perhaps for people that don't do anything except browse the internet and check their email. Let them get even slightly outside of their safety zone in Linux vs Windows and see what happens. For the majority of people that use a PC, Linux is complete shit and extremely user unfriendly. Maybe not for you, me, and many others. But for the MAJORITY of people, it is a terrible option.

Ubuntu runs on debian, you can use any other debian based OS or even just run Mint/Pop_OS!
That being said, Fedora's worked for everything I needed it to.

Ironically Pop OS has/had that issue where installing Steam would break it. I’ve also had compatibility issues with Mint in the past which caused me to just use Ubuntu and install Cinnamon.

I would highly recommend checking out Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC version (1809). It has none of the bloatware shit that'd annoy me and most people don't know it exists because it's meant for companies to use, not home users.

God forbid home users use a version that isn't loaded with garbage, Microsoft. Smh.

Main potential downside I found to LTSC is that because you will take longer to get newer versions of Windows 10, IIRC it caused me problems with Windows store/Gamepass games and/or some other feature I wanted.

I ended up having to mess around with an iso at the time to manually force an update to play a game.

Of course if you’re just using LTSC for Steam, Epic, etc. you may not have this issue.

That market share was 1% just a few years ago. Also why are you coming off as extremely hostile with every reply? Like seriously this isnt needed.

Companies are bad to everyone and us. Because Windows 7 is best operating system for gaming same like Windows XP.

I'm still using Windows 7 since year 2013 and have zero issues and no crash so far. Windows 7 still kicking and very solid means best operating system in the world!

How everyone like Windows 10 and Windows 11 have crappy auto Windows updates that would mess up their computers and lost all important files to destroy. Windows 12 do same like Windows 10 and 11 have worst features and lousy operating system just like Windows 95, ME, Vista and 8.

People would protest against companies for drop support on Windows 7 is one very important should not ignore and no excuse for cut support off.

Microsoft and other companies will face huge fines in court very soon then pay about millions to billions dollars in damage to all in world.

When year going in 2024 then all people will ready to protest against companies. Never give up period!

People should stop trying to be cool recommending Linux ... you are not cool at all only because you tell people you are so awesome using something like Linux only because in theory it could be "safe" as long as someone with the proper knowledge checks the code as well as it can be modified in like endless possible ways as long as you are the linux professional number one.

I am a Windows admin, I do this as a Job so I am not an Idiot but still after having to deal with Linux on a few occasions at work my conclusion was that it sucks bad, mostly because there are a bazillion different versions that all work different with a super toxic community not even trying to help someone that has questions only telling them off as stupid and recomment them going back to windows -.-V

To properly use Linux you first need to get your Masters Degree in Rocket Science then in Engenering after that you build yourself a spaceship circle around the moon a few times and need to meet with the holy father himself to get a godly tutorial then you go back to earth try the tutorial and notice it doesn't work as its for revision 0134.4135.35452 of your linux version while you are using 0134.4135.35452b which changed everything completely so you will have to build a new rocket do the same stuff again, come back with a new tutorial only to notice everyone telling you that your version has some major bugs which either you need to reprogramm yourself or wait for the fix which also will render your whole tutorial useless again.

P.S. the raise in Linux user can easily be explained by the Steam Deck ...

its time to let Windows 7 go. its 2023 people, theres a wealth of newer and more secure options out now.
unless you're using some netbook which cant run anything newer, in which case... what fucking games are you palying on steam?
ahem. i ran windows 8 on a laptop that could DEFINETELY not run windows 10(the laptop is now a spare i use and it runs arch godbless) for like 3 years. here is (some of)what i played(note i played most of these with a controller):
cuphead
binding of issac
shovel knight
rabi-ribi
osu!(not on steam and i still play it now on my fancy ass gaming pc but hey im counting it)
touhou luna nights
hollow knight
super meat boy
rogue legacy
axiom verge
sonic mania
celeste
castle crashers
i could keep going on and ON man. i got SO much mileage in terms of gaming out of that damn thing

Unless you're legally brain-dead, the average joe is smart enough to use Linux these days, especially with Google at their fingertips for any issues they might run into. The support forums (And now Discord servers too) are overwhelmingly helpful.
I guess the problem here is that approximately half of all people are dumber than the average joe.

a few corrections:
there's another OS out there that's solidly built and where every upgrade is an actual upgrade and not an unnessacary change, it supports all the newest software.... it's called Linux and it runs on anything :P

Linux is not an "OS", it is the kernel, and no it doesn't support all the latest software, it supports hardware, and then you build software on top of that. "every upgrade is an actual upgrade" i assume you're talking about distro updates. in which case, no "linux" isn't updating, the software that makes your distribution work, like your window manager, desktop enviroment, and all those other goodies, update(unless of course, the kernel updates alongside everything but even then whether or not every kernel update is considered an "actual upgrade" is a whole nother can of worms) . also. also even just talking about distros, really, rreally? REALLY? ALL THE NEWEST SOFTWARE? what if i need to use adobe software for a class? what if i need to work on a project with visual studio(not visual studio code, that's a different thing)? what if i want to play an unsupported game?(genshin, or valorant for instance) what if i want to play some free games i got on the epic store?
i wont lie, gnu/linux has a lot of awesome software available, but to say "all the latest software" is just naive man
Ubuntu, Puppy, Manjaro, etc are just a few user-friendly distros that come to mind.
PLEASE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DONT USE MANJARO
https://manjarno.snorlax.sh/ has reasons why
if you want arch with an installer, arch comes with an installer: type archinstall at the terminal when you put in the install disk, dont worry, the CLI won't kill you.
if you still want a gui installer or archinstall doesn't work and you are deathly afraid of manually installing arch which requires the horrors of... partitioning a disk and then typing some commands:
endeavour is pretty nice from what i hear. i dont use it(arch FTW baby) but everyone i meet who uses it loves it
From the keyboard getting fucked over to the SSD getting fried when i tried to repair ubuntu and linux being SLOWER THAN WINDOWS SOME FUCKING HOW.
this is because ubuntu and most DEs fucking SUCK ASS and are insanely bloated. if you want a more lightweight solution, you can install something like debian or arch, and then install a lighter Window Manger or Desktop Enviroment on top of it, like openbox or awesomewm

tiny thing but this always bugs me whenever people say it. the looks are not distro-exclusive. do you like how someone's linux mint install looks visually but LOVE debian or whatever? then you can install cinnamon, and uninstall your current DE, and ta-daaaa. also it doesn't matter but the technical term for "windows like layout" is "floating windows

Well I guess I was pertaining to the "start menu" in Mint, with the taskbar on the bottom and the menu button on the far left. Windows been that way since Windows 95. Many Distros opt for either sidebars, top bars, or top and bottom bars, and I can't really stand any of those layouts personally.

I stand corrected. I didn't think you could play so many indies on a weak system but when there's a will there's a way

Hostile? Naw. If that's what you're getting, that's on you. Don't know what else to tell ya kiddo. Anyway, so it's jumped LESS than a whole whopping 2% in three years? Clap clap. That was seriously your comeback to prove me wrong? That it's jumped less than 2% in several years? 😂😂😂 See? Laughter!!! Non-hostile. Do you feel safer now?

windows 7 is dead, its old, its unsupported, and just not up to date any more, and if your sayign windows 95 was the worst os like me vista and 8 ur more delusional than u sound, 95 was revolutionary all 3 versions of it, then 98 and 98se, ok me was dogshit and vista is the whole reason u have windows 7, 8 was jut different but solid., face it windows 7 is dead, move on no one is going to sue over no support they wont face huge fines. every company stops supporting at some point, u cant live in the past or it holds things back.

I agree with most of this here, but I think telling someone who was going to install Ubuntu Linux to install Arch Linux and awesomewm might be a bit too technical, coming from a guy who uses Slackware.
