The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - gameplay demonstration, limited edition Switch OLED

Nintendo has given fans a long-awaited update on the status of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. As of today, development has wrapped up, meaning the game is on track for its May launch. The ten minutes of gameplay shows some exploration of Hyrule, new powers that Link has, and the new Sky Islands. Weapon degradation makes a return, but you can now fuse random items together to create weapons with better durability; enemies can do this as well. Arrows can also be fused to have new elemental effects, and homing arrows can be made as well. "Ultrahand" is an ability that lets you stick items together--for example, you can stick three large logs and two fans together to create a boat, with seemingly lots of crafting potential to play around with. Another new gameplay element called ascend allows you to rocket up to a ceiling and go through it to the top of wherever you are.

Nintendo also used the opportunity to reveal a Tears of the Kingdom limited edition Nintendo Switch OLED console. Like most Nintendo limited edition systems, it does not come with the game, though it releases just a little earlier than Tears of the Kingdom, with a release date of April 28th.

Oh my fucking god - WHY WEAPON FRAGILITY

Hopefully it's at least double or triple that of BotW (and hopefully you can repair stuff), but all the comments I made in the announcement thread still stand - weapon rewards feel worthless, you're gonna use up way more resources in combat than you're gonna get out of it - deincentivising combat, and other open-world games managed to be fun without fragility or by giving their weapons far more uses than here and giving the player a way to repair stuff.

And stamina returns too...sigh. They haven't learned a thing from BotW's shortcomings, have they? Hopefully they at least remembered to put dungeons in their Zelda game, and that dev-placed map markers are incredibly useful and helpful things that should be present.

$90 price tag in Canada. Over $100 with tax. In no world will I pay $100 to play a game.

As for the OLED... WHY DOESN'T IT COME WITH THE GAME? HUH???? What's the point?

Also, the collector's editions selling out while the site barely functions is such a Nintendo thing to happen. Can't believe it's 2023 and this is still an issue.

Is the Switch REALLY sold at a loss? It's very, very dated tech.
In the US it costs 70 USD. that's more than the 66 USD (which converts to 90 AUD). people need to stop complaining... i tell you that's a high quality game, you could pay 100 dollars too

To be fair, the weapon they show breaking was a wooden stick (which I imagine is at the very bottom of the fragility scale). Even more, just by fusing it with a rock it became sturdier so I think this mechanic will be less of a problem as it was in the previous game. The same goes for climbing stamina now that you can literally "ascend" through the mountain.

Finally, they announced the OLED model. I'm gonna buy one of those for sure. Or... I'll rip it off a scalper's corpse if I have to.

Edit: Scalpers may stay alive this time. I got one preordered on Amazon, which limited the quantity to one per customer.

People don't need to stop complaining. People need to complain even more. Only then will any company ever change. Why the hell WOULDN'T I complain about a game releasing on a 6 year old system costing $10 MORE than usual? $100 is bonkers, my guy. Please don't defend it.

Also how do you know it's high quality? It isn't even out yet. Sure, BotW was great, but don't be so quick to assume a game's quality.

I meant specifically that point. i never said charging 70 bucks for a game is normal, I'm against it too- and I gonna try frying my 2060 first before buying it. definetely.

There's a reason why I've played Majora's Mask, Link's Awakening, A Link Between Worlds, Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker multiple times throughout my life, and only slogged through BotW once - it's because those older games were FUN. They had HEART and SOUL, unlike this pointless addition to the open-world craze; combat wasn't a draining chore in those previous games, they had actual dungeons, and exploration was highly enjoyable - plus, they didn't leave me wandering around lost and confused and frustrated like BotW does, thanks to actually telling the player where to go next and having memorable locations and landmarks.

Please Nintendo, return to this goodness after Tears; it's been years since A Link Between Worlds, and we need a reprieve from open-world sewage.

Gotta agree, I just could not get through BotW. It was just so boring to me. Seriously can't wait for the multiplayer mod for cemu to release on April 4th, maybe then I'll actually play through the game and beat it with my gf.

Disappointing. Looks like a DLC for BotW with couple of new mechanics und a slightly adjusted map. Not sure I'm gonna play it this year. Still feel the fatigue from BotW.
I was saying the same thing. It feels like an expansion pack more than a whole-ass brand new game. I'm sure it'll be fine (even though BotW is not my cup of tea), but it definitely feels like milking it (Nintendo be like: BotW was so amazingly successful, let's just tweak it a bit over 5 years and call it a brand-new adventure)

Sure, this open-world format was meant to convey the same sense of open-ended adventure as Zelda 1, but...that game didn't have limited stamina or breakable swords, and that game had proper dungeons - sure, quite simplistic compared to future refinements, but dungeons nonetheless. Plus, the lack of direction was largely due to technological limitations of the time, and the few hints provided by old men were largely nonsensical due to the poor translation standards at the time.

In other words, BotW and TotK just fundamentally fail at what they tried to achieve. They carry the same lack of direction torch as the series' origin, despite the decades of gameplay and narrative refinement and improvement, and they tarnish that origin with unnecessary additional limits on the player.

Hard pass.

Been waiting for this one. Ngl Aonuma spending 10 minutes covering the new rune abilities and nothing else, dampened my excitement. It's a finished product but there's still nothing substantial they're showing aside from little features sprinkled throughout.

Nothing has enticed me more than its initial 2019 teaser so far. That final trailer better hit it home.

Yea you right, I thought about updating my PS3 CFW to 4.91, but why really, everything plays fine now. I guess for people that have already updated past 4.9 it would be helpful.

Thats true, personally I don't play it online at all, in fact, I deleted all wifi details on it once I installed CFW, so it won't connect and auto-update itself
