Steam dropping support for Windows 7 and 8 starting on 2024

1680015397185.jpeg

Windows 7 and Windows 8 both met their dire ends on January 10th, 2023, with Microsoft ending support for both operating systems on that day, focusing entirely on Windows 10 and Windows 11 going forward. It was only expected that other kind of software and/or services would follow suit and also drop support for those operating systems.

Steam is also dropping support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 starting on January 1st, 2024. The Steam Client will stop running on those two Windows versions, encouraging their user base to update to a more recent version of Windows, Windows 10 or Windows 11. Steam cites that the main reason for the dropped support is for the reliance on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which also doesn't work on older versions of Windows, as well as relying on security updates which only exist starting in Windows 10.

Here's Steam's official statement from their website:

Windows 7 and Windows 8 Support

As of January 1 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. After that date, the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.

The newest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.

That's good to know.

My options for Linux distros are; Zorin OS, Elementary OS, and now Nobara OS. :) I'll give Microsoft one last chance with Windows 12 and if they screw that up, Linux it is.
I don’t think I’ll wait for 12 before I jump ship. Honestly, the hardest part is the software that requires windows… and for some reason updating my BIOS ruins my Linux installs.

that's a whole year from now, Linux gaming is 98% there. Windows 12 could be XP/7 levels of good and Linux is likely still a superior option, since you're not beholden to a corpo trying to push their tablet/phone future of desktops onto you.

Linux isn't viable for most end users, mainly due to them having the "Good Enough" Mentality end up with them sticking with windows
Unless you're legally brain-dead, the average joe is smart enough to use Linux these days, especially with Google at their fingertips for any issues they might run into. The support forums (And now Discord servers too) are overwhelmingly helpful.

like what?

Destiny 2 is a game I play regularly. Microsoft Office, but I can work around that or if I have to use something like Bottles it works fine. Elgato/Corsair has a disdain for Linux, and I have a few products that will work, but I can’t adjust settings for them. Anything involving screen sharing never worked right for me. That’s all off the top of my head, I know had more issues several months ago before I had to nuke my install.

Also, is HDR working on Nvidia? I don’t remember what the specifics were, but it had issues.

The average Joe doesn’t use Discord and the support forums are actually riddled with jargon and nonsense that the average Joe wouldn’t know unless they took the time to learn it. I love Linux, but it’s still not plug and play and I wish people would stop underselling its learning curve.

Even with the likes of Pop! OS and Mint, it’s still a daunting task for someone new to it. Is it impossible? No… Doesn’t mean it’s stupid easy.

Linux? What's a Linux?

Just install Windows 20, please.

This reminds me of the time when Windows XP was dropped...Back then I refused to update to Windows 7 because I loved XP so much, then I was forced to so I can enjoy the things I liked that wasn't supported anymore on XP.
Was the same when I had to upgrade to Windows 10 when I got a new PC. It is what it is...technology advances, hardware advances that won't officially support old OS's anymore, so if you want to stay up to date with your stuff and want to enjoy new stuff, you either take the plunge and update or if you just hate the newer offerings from Windows, then change OS's.
Or if nothing suits you, then stay on the old platform of your choice, but risk and miss out on new stuff, that you'd like to get/do/experience, because of no support.

Yeah, technology does advance, but sadly doesn't mean it gets better.

Going from Windows 7 to Windows 11 is unfortunately a downgrade and will require a lot of changes for it to feel like a traditional Windows OS. Or just use Windows 10 (11 is 10 reskinned with more restrictions, limitations, and unnecessary tablet-like redesigns). :(

Nobara is the best distro for gaming! :)

https://nobaraproject.org/

Never suggest ubuntu to anyone. It's the most popular but also the worst. It's literally just FOSS Windows.

What’s funny about your comparison is that compatibility is the biggest reason I find myself installing Ubuntu, like I did the other day for some software Manjaro (Arch) didn’t like.

Even Valve still seems to prefer Ubuntu LTS for Steam despite using Arch now:

And it IS easy, as long as you've got the time to dedicate and don't mind learning a thing or two. Bottom line is, if you're too dumb (or just not willing to learn how) to setup a gaming machine, then stick to console gaming. :yaysp:

Having spent 8 years at least building up a library, it’s disgusting to be honest. Nobody likes windows 11 and windows 10 is full of bloat ware so this is a slap in the face. I got a patcher to patch my games so they’ll play without steam client so I’m just gonna patch em all

oh boy... i use linux from time to time for some of the things i need, but i have to say: im sick of people who think hey are more intelligent and anybody else dont have a brain because they use linux and blah blah blah. yes, linux is good for most of the things a normal user need, but saying that gaming on linux is perfect, is too much. no, IT IS NOT! i use windows 10 here, and i use because of gaming. simples as that.

and dont get me wrong: i want linux to be at least 99% good in the gaming area, because is the only thing that made me windows right now... but until then, windows is the way. maybe im "half-brained" (even if I DO USE LINUX TOO) but oh well...

to people who still use windows 7: at this point, windows 10 is pretty mature, and you can get a pretty clean os too. there's the ltsc version, tiny 10 (and 11 for that matter) and so on. so, no worries. since xp, every time i need to switch windows, i do a dual boot, and still use both os until i am familiar with the newer. that make thing easy

yeah... until Bungie stops being so fucking uptight about Linux you'll have to get a console for that. or run it through cloud streaming. yuck

Ubuntu runs on debian, you can use any other debian based OS or even just run Mint/Pop_OS!
That being said, Fedora's worked for everything I needed it to.

Okay, you know people who use discord… that’s cool? Doesn’t change what I said though.

It’s got nothing to do with being dumb. Anybody can learn anything. It’s that people sit there, spouting off about how easy it is. It’s really not. To most people it’s a completely foreign concept. Even moving to MacOS is that much easier. It gets even worse when the people wanting to switch see the different nix flavors.

What also gets me is that people love talking about gaming on Linux like it’s seamless. It’s still nowhere near good enough to be a for sure replacement for everybody. Maybe not even most people. Proton isn’t perfect and won’t ever be if we’re being honest. Compatibility is much better than it was even 2 years ago, but still leaves a lot to be desired. Don't even get me started on the kernels..

The amount of tinkering that may be required is what’s off putting. That may never change if developers don’t properly support the Linux ecosystem. They likely won’t as there’s no money in it for them.

I would highly recommend checking out Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC version (1809). It has none of the bloatware shit that'd annoy me and most people don't know it exists because it's meant for companies to use, not home users.

God forbid home users use a version that isn't loaded with garbage, Microsoft. Smh.

Is there an iso for it on the Microsoft website? Sounds good

I'll upload a clean ISO directly from Microsoft to MEGA and then PM you it.

I don't remember how I came across this version, but it all started with Windows updating and ruining stuff I had running (as it auto-restarted without asking me).

This version has extended support until 2029.
