Steam dropping support for Windows 7 and 8 starting on 2024

1680015397185.jpeg

Windows 7 and Windows 8 both met their dire ends on January 10th, 2023, with Microsoft ending support for both operating systems on that day, focusing entirely on Windows 10 and Windows 11 going forward. It was only expected that other kind of software and/or services would follow suit and also drop support for those operating systems.

Steam is also dropping support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 starting on January 1st, 2024. The Steam Client will stop running on those two Windows versions, encouraging their user base to update to a more recent version of Windows, Windows 10 or Windows 11. Steam cites that the main reason for the dropped support is for the reliance on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which also doesn't work on older versions of Windows, as well as relying on security updates which only exist starting in Windows 10.

Here's Steam's official statement from their website:

Windows 7 and Windows 8 Support

As of January 1 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. After that date, the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.

The newest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above.

Can't wait until Linux gaming is mainstream for at least single player games.
it's not mainstream but that doesn't mean it's good- the steam deck uses it for a reason. start dualbooting.
Windows 8 came out over 10 years ago. Pretty much anything that can run Windows 8 can run Windows 10 (including Atom based netbooks). There have been ample opportunities to update for free over the years. I don’t see any issues with this move.
"muh telemetry and spying!!" even though it'd make more sense to just use linux if you care about data rather than clinging on to old OSes no developer wants to make games for anymore.

Like damn imagine being so addicted to the 'good old days' of windows that you use Win7 all the time rather than upgrading to Win10/Linux and being done with it. I have immense nostalgia for Windows 7 and even I don't do that shit.

I guess it's the shitty bloatware Microsoft included with it. I'm gonna miss this edition when I'll no longer use it (by 2029) because it's as user friendly and clean as possible while the rest has crap I never agreed to have installed.
TBH i don't think everything that comes with Windows is pure bloatware- Modern Chromium based Edge was actually a good and fast browser, it's the best Windows pack in browser in a while. Supports many extensions, fast and fluid, less ram use than chrome, good shit. Firefox is the best, but this is a good 2nd place.

The Xbox app coming was a nice addition as well, since i could access my GamePass library easily. That being said now that I primarily use Linux (stopped dualbooting 2 weeks ago) I'm gonna be using that Xbox more to access the games on there.

That being said the pack in apps included in my install of Nobara Linux are so much smarter, Steam and Discord are defaults meaning I don't have to download them, Firefox is default so I get the best browser immediately, & the Software app is actually useful.

Also, if you want a budget handheld computer get rid of that celeron laptop and treat yourself to a Steam Deck or Ayn Loki when it comes out, those are awesome!

Thing about Windows 7 is that it was such a solidly built OS that it's a sad day for users to downgrade it to a newer Windows OS.
there's another OS out there that's solidly built and where every upgrade is an actual upgrade and not an unnessacary change, it supports all the newest software.... it's called Linux and it runs on anything :P

Suggesting under-unfriendly Linux to people when the majority barely understand the basics of Windows is amusing at best. Linux sucks and will never catch up to Windows. Ever. Been hearing about it's big takeover for over 30 years now. Still waiting.
I know right? That 1 million+ new users this year is just too little.

if your laptop doesn't support vulkan... at that point just start saving up for a new PC, there's no helping you out of this hole you got yourself in lmao
Not everyone has the money, especially in third-world countries. The fact is that steam runs games fine with the built-in browser disabled, and there are thousands of steam games that run great on old Windows 7 PCs. Windows 7 and 8 definitely still have a few more years left in them.

I'll despise MS when they drop 10 forcing people to buy new PCs at least their doing it at a slower rate than apple (even pre sillicon chips )the only other way to put W11 on unsupported hardware is by patching the iso but you lose out on some major updates (fyi i would recommend Rufus if you go that route as it patches the files during flashing the iso,i believe Windows to go can also be patched that way too

iirc some gog/ea games (namely Nox) won't work in capat mode so it requires windows 7 or older i had it on origin when it was given away

Yeah, not everything.

Just:
- Edge (good browser, but I prefer Brave and Chrome)
- Windows Store and its apps
- Cortana
- Constant Windows Updates
- Windows "tiles" of news, email and weather (I don't care about it)

Make it optional so we don't have to use enterprise editions to avoid bloatware shit.

Hi! You must live under a rock with Patrick Star. There are SEVERAL user-friendly linux distros out these days, with some having a similar windows-like layout for familiarity. Linux Mint (Cinnamon version), Ubuntu, Puppy, Manjaro, etc are just a few user-friendly distros that come to mind.

Nobara is the best distro for gaming! :)

Never suggest ubuntu to anyone. It's the most popular but also the worst. It's literally just FOSS Windows.

I rarely use it after v8.10, but it still has it's uses. The Cinnamon remix version isn't half bad, but Mint is by far the best if you're gonna do that anyway.

tbh, i dislike linux. Ive tried desktop linux several times on several systems. From a chromebook to a Ailenware to a custom built desktop and a average dell. Ive tried alot of them, and i had problems on all of them.

From the keyboard getting fucked over to the SSD getting fried when i tried to repair ubuntu and linux being SLOWER THAN WINDOWS SOME FUCKING HOW.

I think im just gonna stick with windows with WBSL for building my homebrew.

Then again, why are we even talking about linux? This is about Steam dropping support on Windows 7 & 8

Linux makes a great development environment in my opinion because everything is plain simple to setup such as redistributables and paths.

From my experience, Linux has a 'Goldilocks Zone' where it can arguably be easier than Windows....it's as soon as you leave this zone that it hits you like Wile E. Coyote running into a painted wall.

That's good to know.

My options for Linux distros are; Zorin OS, Elementary OS, and now Nobara OS. :) I'll give Microsoft one last chance with Windows 12 and if they screw that up, Linux it is.
