Possible to isolate the Game Gear emulator from Sonic Adventure DX as a standalone emulator? (Has flawless 2 player capability)

I was playing the GameCube Sonic Adventure DX on my Wii U and was playing the 'bonus minigames' (which are literally all 12 Sonic Game Gear games, the same ones joining Sonic Origins Plus), and realized that it flawlessly and instantly allows 2 Game Gears to be emulated at once, simply by having player 2 hit start, a second instance of the game starts on the right half of the screen while player 1 gets the left half, this works with any of the 12 games, many of which don't even offer multiplayer, but those that do, also seamlessly link up. It's honestly quite impressive.

I do wish it would let you choose which individual audio source to play from, because it instead layers both audio tracks which can get maddening if you're not playing a multiplayer game linking together.

I've seen homebrew Game Boy emulators tackle this task on the Wii (GB4GB) and some of the GB cores in retroarch offer the feature too. Thing is, even on a Wii U, the speeds of just 2 Game Boy game (even those without color) being emulated at once in these emulators isn't perfect. So to see this official solution for the same feature for Game Gear going as far back as the GameCube is both fascinating to me, and has me wanting to know of we can isolate it and release it as a (v)Wii or even GameCube piece of homebrew, able to load any 2 Game Gear games at once, not even necessarily the same game and not needing to be a Sonic game either.

Also I recognize that perhaps this isn't so much a Wii U topic necessarily, but there isn't much of an active GameCube section here, and the Wii U section is more active than the Wii section. And if we can do this, the Wii U would be able to benefit from it (in addition to Wii and maybe even GameCube).

Interesting concept. I honestly didn’t know this was a thing in SA DX (I spent most of my Game Gear time in Sonic Gems Collection or Genesis Plus GX on vWii). I also didn’t know GB4GB was a thing either so I guess I’m just learning all sorts of interesting stuff today. I’m always down for more multiplayer options on my Wii U, so hopefully something more becomes of this. Who knows, maybe we’ll be able to get split-screen multiplayer for other handhelds like the GBA in the distant future too?

Well I've rallied for that very idea in the past, but considering how the homebrew solutions for the concept of just a Game Boy (Color) isn't perfect on Wii or Wii U, I have to imagine GBA is a whole 'nother problem emulating 2 or more at once on the Wii U (but damn would I love if just 2 could be emulated at once, one on the TV and one on the Game Pad and able to link up of course). I feel like here though could potentially be a great place for such a concept to gain any steam, since Sega offered a brilliant solution for 2 retro portable devices at once on a GameCube (I believe many of these Game Gear games with the same kind of 2 player solution appeared in the Mega Collection Plus that appeared on PS2 and Xbox, so the same kind of emulator could probably be isolated for those systems but instead pulling the emulator from that collection of games instead of Adventure DX on those systems).

Since I managed to find this thread, I guess I should mention. Has someone tried the two player link with any other games (A rom injection mod of some kind?)

Other than that, I should point out that Sonic Origins Plus will be releasing in June, it will feature the same exact 12 game gear titles that is in sonic adventure dx. No idea who emulation it is, (maybe M2, Just speculation.) But it could also feature multiplayer. We will have to see.

Just that it might be getting more attention that a old gamecube game with the same collection of game gear titles. With more modern tools at the disposal & with that game collection more accessible and all that. :ninja:

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it's the exact same emulator for the Game Gear games in Origins (in fact it was their announcement to be joining Origins that had initially reminded me that the same collection of Game Gear games were in Adventure DX on GameCube and got me wondering about all of this to begin with).

Well it's hard to say. Considering that was like over 15 years old. Times do change and with that comes more improvements. It would just make sense to me that M2 would be responsible for the game gear emulation in the sonic origins plus update. Considering how tight their relationship is with Sega and that they also was responsible for the game gear virtual console on 3DS. :P

See but that's the thing, I really think they're half-assing this 'plus' content in Origins, at least in terms of the bonus classic games. I believe they're doing a quick port of whatever they got working back there into modern hardware. Perhaps with some improvements, but I wouldn't be shocked to see it overall function exactly the same, including with the pick up and play 2-player mode.

While I haven’t experimented much with the emulator in Sonic Adventure DX nor am I familiar with the Rom file format, I have messed with the one used in Sonic Gems Collection about a decade ago, which also has multiplayer support, testing Roms I ripped from the PC version of Sonic Mega Collection Plus which uses the same emulators as Gems Collection for both Game Gear and Mega Drive, as well as ripping the Rom files exclusive to the Japanese version of Gems Collection...

It’s worth mentioning Sonic Mega Collection on Game Cube uses a different Mega Drive emulator and Rom files format than the one used in Mega Collection Plus, Gems Collection however shares the same emulators as Mega Collection Plus, meaning said emulator has been officially ported to PS2, XBox, PC, and later on Game Cube.

My results were mixed however, my memory is fuzzy but if I remember...

Sonic 2 GG had some minor issues running on the PC emulator.

Using US exclusive titles like Sonic Spinball and Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine didn’t work on the Japanese version of Gems Collection.

Using the Japan exclusive ones though like Bare Knuckle and Bonanza Brothers seem to work fine on the US version of Gems Collection though you will get the Japanese version, afair even Bare Knuckle 1 which on real hardware switches region automatically depending on the region of the console.

While not a Wii U emulator but No$GBA has multiplayer support for almost two decades with support for both multi-gamepack and single/master gamepack, it’s unfortunate most people know it only as a DS emulator.

While this might be more suitable to be mentioned in the 3DS thread but the 3DS VC GG titles also support multiplayer.
Years ago ; GB emulation in Pokemon Stadium
Today ; GG emulation in Sonic Mega Collection / SADX.

The future is now.
It’s also worth mentioning there is a fully functional GBA emulator for the GC with impressive compatibility, I tried many games with it runs great via Nintendont, only downside is it doesn’t save but depending on the game it’s fully functional, I’m unsure where it’s been ripped from though but it’s very similar to the N64 one used for Ocarina of Time.

I think @MikaDubbz is more interested in the fact Sonic Adventure DX game gear emulator allows TWO players for all games. Every game included allows two seperate games emulated at at the same time, even without the game's requirement to actually support link multiplayer function like Sonic Drift 1 & 2 and DR.Robotnik Mean Bean machine. The screenshot here is from Sonic Adventure DX on Gamecube, running two seperate games at once. The chosen game does not support any link multiplayer function that a real game gear would.

In Sonic Gems collection, that's not possible. Only Sonic Drift 2 can be played with two players, because it's the only game that has multiplayer link function. You can unlock timed trials of Sonic Drift 1 & Dr.Robotnik Mean Bean Machine in the gallery. But because those are just unlockable timed trials and not part of the main collection, it won't allow multiplayer there.

You would have to play Sonic Mega collection plus (Which is not on gamecube) to play multiplayer in those. As a added cut, Sonic Mega/Gems collection game gear runs multiplayer mode in 30FPS instead of 60FPS like Sonic Adventure DX. This is the difference between what Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Mega/Gems Collection have. Probably why he mentioned Sonic Adventure DX specifically.

Currently, not even homebrew emulators on the same console does this. Genesis plus gx for example, which has a native port to both gamecube & wii that is not tied to retroarch, doesn't even allow this feature. There is currently no way to play game gear with multiplayer in Genesis plus gx.

As I mentioned I believe both Sonic Gems Collection and Sonic Mega Collection Plus support being able to play two Game Gear games running at the same time, in addition they also support save states both quick and permanent, which the emulator used in Sonic Adventure DX does not support save states.

Again you've missed my point, I wasn't talking about only Sonic Gems Collection I said both Sonic Gems Collection (PS2/GC) and Sonic Mega Collection PLUS (PS2/Xbox/PC) use the same format for the Roms and the same emulators, my experiment was to rip those Rom files across all three games (Sonic Mega Collection Plus, Sonic Gems Collection (US), and Sonic Gems Collection (Jap)) and test them across multiple platforms, which I posted my results above but basically it works, meaning you can rip Sonic Drift 1 form the PC version of Sonic Mega Collection Plus and replace it with one of the Game Gear titles in Sonic Gems Collection on Game Cube and run the game, and it still supports multi-player and save state, my idea is if we're going to rip an emulator why not use that one? It has the same functionality, it supports save states, and it's been ported to multip consoles including PC which might make documentation easier.
