How to spot a fake Sandisk card

I finally was the unfortunate recipient of a fake card, and would like to point out several things you can look at before ever opening the package. I actually did open the package, so I can show an example of what a fake card reports in nyx as well.
EDIT: Forgot to point out that real packaging always has that top hole punched out. This fake one actually had it still in there (as is often the case with fake packages). It simply popped out while I was opening the package.
Let's start with the fake:

FakeBackside.JPG

My notes on the image say it all. Or at least a good bit. I'm no expert.

IMG_1373.JPG

Again, my notes cover this pic as well.

This is just an example of what a fake card might report to nyx, via the mmc hardware:
BogusID.JPG

Pretty much everything here is wrong. Why this screen? I wanted to swap in the card while nyx was already loaded, in order to let nyx format it. But as, is (formatted to exFAT with a 256kb cluster), nyx could not read the hekate/atmosphere files from the card. My mod chip wouldn't even load hekate with the card. The loading problems were fixed by using mini tool partition wizard to format it to fat32 with 64kb clusters, but it still showed this same info. UHS: U0. Video Class: V0. Application performance class: A0. Current speed 25MB/s... get it? How about the bogus serial number? Should have letters in there, end definitely not a bunch of zeros in a row. No vendor or OEM ID, bogus model, and no H/W or F/W revision either. And by the way, if you use something like mini tool partition wizard to format a card DO NOT TOUCH THE "EMPTY" 64MB PARTITION IN FRONT OF THE CARD! There is actually information there that NEEDS to be there. I didn't make that mistake this time, but in my ignorance, I feel that I have caused others to make that mistake in the past.

Now lets compare to a REAL 1TB Sandisk Extreme card (sorry, I didn't want to pay for an Extreme Pro):
IMG_1387.JPG

IMG_1389.JPG

IMG_1393.JPG

This is a view of the top/bottom of the bubble that the card sits in. I tried to add a note to the full package pic, but it may be hard to read. The nice curved indention is not usually on a fake.

IMG_1394.JPG

Serial number removed for obvious reasons. Don't forget these things have a lifetime warranty. As long as your serial number/card is legit.

IMG_1396.JPG

And finally, minus an obscured serial number, here is the kind of information a legit card should be reporting to nyx:
nyx20230326_151231.png

Correct speed classes, Bootloader bus, Vendor, Model, HW and FW revisions... and don't forget a legit-looking UNIQUE serial number.

I sincerely hope that this info can prevent heartache. Some of these shameless fake sellers actually show pics of the fake packaging and/or fake product codes. At the very least, this should help you decide to return/report, before actually opening the package. If you get it from Amazon, and the item is "fulfilled by Amazon", there is a high chance of a refund even if you've opened the package. But always check the actual seller and read the seller's reviews as well! Outside of some really special sale or COMBO deal from a big-name seller, you are crazy to not be suspicious of a 1TB selling for $100 or less.

If memory is ridiculously cheap, we should avoid it and need to buy from official seller
Hard to spot them, when everyone posts that they are an authorized seller. From Western Digital's own website, an Extreme Pro 1TB microSD card is $329.99, while a legit one from an authorized dealer can dip down lower than $200. The official site also does not ship everywhere. It doesn't ship to FPO/APO addresses, for example.

sigh... here we go...

because once something is on the internet, it's always on the internet, and I don't need some faker printing my serial number on all of their cards, where the very first person to do an RMA because the speeds won't go above 17MB/s, might actually get a legit replacement (because it's a legit serial number). Then I won't be able to get a replacement when my card fails, because it will remain in their records.

You don't need to physically return the card in all cases. I've replaced one, where I simply had to take a pic of the card's front and back, showing the SN, and another pic after I cut the card in half with scissors.

This isn't a lot of help for online purchasing: I recently bought a fake 512GB Sandisk card on eBay where the seller had used a real package for the picture. The price was reasonable but not exceptionally low. It failed completely after writing just a few GB of data. Maybe if there were real consequences (as in criminal prosecution) for fraud people wouldn't do it so much? I think the wrist-slap of eBay feedback is really nothing, esp. if you have a large number of sales.

In the pictures there was no way to see the protective seal had been broken and a fake card slipped in. Returning it for a refund was no big deal, but it was a waste of time and at the end of the day I still didn't have a 512GB card. Lots of legit sellers use stock photos--who wants to take pictures of 1000s of SD cards?

Why didn't I just buy one in person at Wallmart? Because the store in my crackerjack hillbilly town--WMT is the only store!-- never has big cards. 256GB is the largest I've ever seen in more than a year. It's over 30 miles round-trip to get to a real city and find stuff not complete WMT/DollarGenaral shite.

I know stock photos are an issue, but funny enough, some do show pics of fake packages. I have also not seen fake ones advertised with the legit product code in the title, so searching for the product code (get it from the Western Digital site) instead of 1TB sd card, or whatever, can help.

This info was more of what to look for, before you’ve ripped the package open, so I’m assuming your time had already been wasted. I was also hoping to alleviate some of the constant “issues” posted on GitHub, because people couldn’t put 2 and 2 together, and figure out that their problem is their card.

I would never purchase any sort of flash memory from Ebay, Amazon or any other marketplace. This was great advice often given way back in 2003 when i started buying online and it's still the same advice i'd pass on to anyone in 2023.

Only ever buy any sort of flash memory from a reputable computer hardware supplier, in the UK I can recommend:

I'd be wary of even trusting a company using Amazon to fulfil the order in all honesty, if anyone really must purchase from Amazon then ensure Amazon is the actual seller. Amazon in a lot of ways has become a far worse version of Ebay when it comes to marketplace sellers.

You just have to buy it from the actual company's Amazon page, no complaints with my 1tb Sandisk
I ordered 4 SD carts. 3 direct from Amazon and one with the same capacity, but for 1/5 of the price from a random Amazon seller. It wasnt really surprising, that the cheap one was a fake. It had 18GB instead of 1TB. I would not recommend to put any important data on the 18GB. I recognized that a lot of fake cards do have a flat surface, but real high capacity cards have visible tracks below the printing.

True, but h2testw will take like 15 hours on a fake 1TB card... Chances are, any number of things I've outlined here should be obvious.
I tested a 1TB and it took ages, but more like 8h with my hardware. Anyway, thanks for your hints, very useful.

it's more than hardware. Fake ones are often not UHS (note mine reporting UHS 0), and a continuous speed for large files tends to cap out at 17MB/s.

I kind of want to try finding a cheaper (than official website) SanDisk pro reader for testing max speeds. The readers I have now, were purchased for their reliability with an O3DS and New3DS hard mod.

If you want to test cards quickly i can recommend f3 which doesn't need a full overwrite like h2testw does but it may not be able to detect the true capacity accurately (which doesn't matter that much since you are not gonna use a fake, are you?). Alternatively it can also do the same full overwrite test.

On a side note: I've been using a "real" sandisk 200gb for a year or 2 in my switch but lately it's getting slower and slower (like really slow when writing). Off-course can't find a receipt anywhere. I went online and contacted support from sandisk.com and after sending some pictures of the card and speedtestresults they asked for, I got a notification that I could send back the defective card and they'll ship me a new one: more than 2 years old without receipt. Shitty the card failed, but very well handled bij Sandisk!

Been so long since I bought a 200GB card myself probably 7-8 years ago.

Sounds like a proper erase can fix this. I had several different SD cards which slowed down over time and erase fixed it. It's the same idea used on SSDs but there it's called TRIM.
Older SDFormatter versions had an erase format option but it needs a PCIe based card reader because USB readers can't pass through the needed commands to the SD. Under Linux you can archive the same via the blkdiscard tool.

Glad you mentioned mymemory as I’m waiting on a 512 SanDisk card from them :creep:

Thinking now if I should’ve just gone for their own branded card which has faster speeds
