On most devices, PC, Phone, a usb storage isn't the same as internal storage, it has been and still is.
It’s certainly close enough. Good thing you bring up phones, another device that I absolutely can plug a USB drive into and just use it for storage from the level of the OS (assuming the vendor hasn’t gimped it, in which case I would criticise them also *and expect* custom ROM’s/firmwares to fix that).

What :D? On pc, storage is storage dude you can boot the whole system from USB :X
Which OS are you talking about? Removable and fixed are normally treated different and that is by choice of the development team and there isn't much to argue for treating them the same.

Which OS are you talking about? You can not use usb like a HDD on Windows and Mac OS. Removable and fixed are normally treated different and that is by choice and it is smart way to choose
You can run Windows from a USB drive just fine. Portable installations are fiddly to initially create, but they work great when you’re on the go. You can carry all of your productivity with you, no matter what computer you plug that USB drive into. You can use Rufus or WinToUSB to make the drive bootable. In fact, this used to be a feature supported by Microsoft themselves.

I don’t know about Macs as I don’t use Apple’s OS, but I assume that where there’s a will, there’s a way.

I speculate that it wasn't hard to do that USB loading of game for many people and most people can do it if they set their mind to it.

I expect to be able to plant a tree if I wanted to. No need to ask me if I want to or why I didn't.

I mean, this is a thread about HDD loading, so… that’s where it’s being discussed. It’s, undoubtedly, a missing feature. It would be nice, and doesn’t entail piracy - more storage options doesn’t magically make sigpatches go away - they’re still there. I have stacks of legit Switch cartridges that I already have to shuffle to play them all, and I’m being told that I should also shuffle SD cards because that’s normal. I’m told that Horizon OS can transfer save files and media to the SD or to the internal storage, and nowhere else unless I bend over backwards or use a separate device, and that’s supposed to be fine too. I mean, for God’s sake, I think we can all agree it would be useful for some.

useful, way cheaper than sd cards also more reliable not even to mention that in many cases it can be just faster in terms of storage speed and swapping sd card vs just plug your drive via usb :X

Some day every single game ever publish on Switch might be able to fit into one storage device. It seems unlikely today but it wasn't that long ago that it seems impossible to have all the game ever published for SNES to be fitted into one storage device. You can have that on your Switch today? Some will probably say most of them are not worth the space it occupies though.

Umm, to run macOS natively on a PC AT ALL, you have to create an EFI built for YOUR hardware. Making a hackintosh is tough. Making it work worth a damn is a lot tougher, and you can't plug it into any PC you want and expect it to work. When you make it work, you make it work for very specific hardware, and ONLY that hardware.

Until someone actually implements said functionality in a straightforward way, this thread is moot. The initial question has been answered (in too many ways), OP never even came back and @mikefor20 has provided a tut on how to accomplish something close to what we want (still need to read it).

None of us are making new points and moving this conversation anywhere.

Here's a new concept for some of you though: Honesty

It's OKAY to be wrong! Watch, real easy:

I was mistaken in thinking the new PicoFly FW could help in this and sparked this thread back up to only see it turn back into a debate (debates are for polls, threads are for discussions, no?). Sorry.

I'm sure someone will accomplish our dream of true USB storage soon and I hope this thread gets updated to let us know.
