"Resident Evil: Death Island", a new CGI movie following the game's story, teases the return of Jill Valentine

Capcom is back once again with the main series of CGI movies for Resident Evil with the new entry, "Resident Evil: Death Island".
The CGI movies of Resident Evil are set in the actual canon of the videogames, continuing with the timeline of the original characters like Leon and Chris from the games, instead of being a reimagining or a readaptation of the franchise like what Anderson did with the Milla Jovovich-centric live-action films.

The teaser trailer centers in what seems to be a prison island setting, with Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy returning as protagonists, with the new and first inclusion to the CGI movies being Jill Valentine, after several years since her storyline appearance back in RE5, which takes place in 2009 in-game. The synopsis of the movie goes as follows:

Synopsis said:
D.S.O. agent Leon S. Kennedy is on a mission to rescue Dr. Antonio Taylor from kidnappers, when a mysterious woman thwarts his pursuit. Meanwhile, B.S.A.A. agent Chris Redfield is investigating a zombie outbreak in San Francisco, where the cause of the infection cannot be identified. The only thing the victims have in common is that they all visited Alcatraz Island recently. Following that clue, Chris and his team head to the island, where a new horror awaits them.

For those interested, here's the list of CGI movies from the Resident Evil franchise that you can catch on:
  • Resident Evil: Degeneration
  • Resident Evil: Damnation
  • Resident Evil: Vendetta
  • Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness

timeline? RE7 and 8 happen in the same timeline lmao
the last movie happened after RE6 and before RE7

I’m aware. Perhaps it was a poor choice of words and I should’ve said storyline, but it’s distinctly why I called it “pre-RE7.”

Regardless the point remains. I’m excited to see us return to characters and plotlines established before the soft reboot.

Is it confirmed that this takes place before RE7 in the timeline tho?

When you mentioned 'prison' I thought it might be tied to Revelations 2... but that wasn't Alcatraz.
Regardless, the animated movies have always been more enjoyable than any of the live action adaptations, so I look forward to seeing this - I may even rewatch the others prior to this releasing.

Capcom confirmed this takes place in 2015, after Vendetta but before RE7. Sadly they only did so via a press release from their Japanese website, but that’s the official word so far. To me that does make sense with the timeline, and Redfield’s design in the trailer does look closer to his RE7 appearance than his Village one.

Oh nice, wasn't aware of that.
It'll still be the latest appearance from Jill in canon to date in RE. It'd be nice to know what happened to her after RE5 I guess.

I am happy to see Chris Redfield returns. My favorite character, man. I saw the first film and it was good. this is going even better because of Chris Redfield will be in it. Can't wait!

As much as I like RE, I never get into these movies. There’s something good I can say about them though: I’ve suffered insomnia since I was a kid. But these movies make me sleep almost instantly. Especially one with Leon in an european town (or something like that).

So in my book that already makes them better than the live action ones.

I quite enjoyed some of the earlier CGI films. Definitely a "for fans of the series" effort but still enjoyable and in keeping with things.
That's how it should be IMO. Movie adaptations of games (and whatever you want to call these movies) should try to please fans. A good/faithful adaptation that's a decent movie is probably going to be enjoyed more than an average movie that's unfaithful.

That is a minimum bar for me. A better one is to also make it appeal to others as a standalone effort of sorts, or roping them into the world.
