Hey all,

Device: New3DS XL [JPN]
SD Card: 32GB SanDisk Micro
Luma Version: Luma3DS v11.0
Twilight Menu Version: v24.9.1

The situation is that after putting my New3DS into sleep mode overnight, when opening it in the morning there was only a black screen. I rebooted and the blue "on" LED turned on, but both screens stayed blank. I let the console sit for 30 minutes with no change (the blue LED remained on, the screens remained blank - no audio either). I looked up online and over the last few weeks these are the steps I have followed;

  • Powering the New3DS on and allowing it to sit/load (multiple times, 10 minutes to half an hour each time)
  • Removing the battery, reinserting the battery, then powering on.
  • Removing the SD card, then powering on (let the console sit for 10+ minutes).
  • Reinserting the SD card, then powering on,
  • After backing up all the files, running h2testw on the SD card (no errors).
  • Reformatting the SD card 4 times then reinserting.
  • Pressing (Start) whilst powering on, and waiting 10+ minutes (no change, did not boot into anything, screen remained blank).
  • Pressing (L) + (R) + (A) + (Up) whilst powering on, and waiting 10+ minutes (no change, did not boot into anything, screen remained blank).

I've seen a lot of forum threads where people advise following the CTR Transfer Tutorial but I cannot boot into GodMode9 in the first place. No matter what I remove or how long I wait, nothing will boot. It just hangs on the black screen with the blue LED on.

I'm not sure what to try next - the device was working fine and I hadn't changed anything before this happened. It'd been put in Sleep Mode (closed lid) multiple times beforehand, but never had this issue - the device wasn't jossled or dropped or moved overnight, so I'm not sure how this happened in the first place.

I have a few backups of the SD card from different times.

Is it perma-bricked? Or if there anything else I can do?

You may try discharging the 3DS system (battery trick), to get rid of faulty saved information.
  1. Unplug the power adapter, the battery and SDcard.
  2. Press/hold the power button about 30+ sec.
  3. Press the power button again multiple times.
  4. Leave it a long time lie like that, so it can discharge completly.
  5. Insert only the battery and try to boot in any menu. Recovery Mode, GodMode9, Luma3DS configuration, or HOME Menu.

If it doesnt help, last chance is using ntr-boot to reinstall boot9strap to hopefully get in gm9 for a CTRTransfer or reflashing the Nand. You will need a compatible flashcard and second DS(i) or 3DS to flash ntr-boot to it. https://3ds.hacks.guide/ntrboot.html

One question bevor, Is it a region changed?

Hey, thank you for the reply and sorry for the very late response from myself. The unit region hasn't been changed, I left it on Japan/in Japanese as I can read Japanese, so that was no big deal.

I've tried the battery trick multiple times now, but unfortunately no luck. Still just a black screen with the power light on. I'm thinking my best next step is going to be ntrboot so I'm going to give that a go in the coming weeks. Hoping it'll actually solve it but if not, I guess I just got unlucky!

UPDATE… A small amount of progress, kind of.

Following the ntrboot tutorial posted by Sypherone previously; I purchased an R4 flashcart (specifically, R4I-B9S). It took a long time to arrive through no fault of the seller, the UK postal service has been having some hold-ups lately. At this point, the status of my N3D XL was;

  • Booting the New 3DS XL with the SD Card used for the 3DS originally (containing luma, etc): 3DS hangs in the “screen is on, blue power light is on - no sound, does not load, even when left open for 30+ minutes”
  • Booting the New 3DS XL with a new SD Card which contains nothing; 3DS hangs in the “screen is on, blue power light is on - no sound, does not load, even when left open for 30+ minutes”
  • Booting New 3DS XL with no SD card present: 3DS boots up after a few seconds (!!!). The home screen shows TWiLight Menu++ (of course when this is selected, it gives the error “FAT init failed!” as there is no SD card present.

So that’s a development! I have no idea why it’s decided to boot okay with no SD card present, as I haven’t touched the 3DS in months whilst waiting for things to arrive…

Now that the R4i-B9S has arrived, I tried following the ntrboot tutorial, but… the flashcard doesn’t appear when put into my 3DS. My 3DS does recognize normal 3DS carts, and normal DS carts (tried on a Japanese copy of Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, and a PAL copy of Pokémon Link (Trozei) and both loaded fine).

Not sure that’s meant to happen, so worried I went looking for more information, and found this tutorial; http://www.r4i-sdhc.com/down/b9s/The definitive guide to 3DS custom firmware.pdf from the r4i-sdhc website. I followed it and it worked… up until Step 13/14.

Following it, I can boot into godmode9 - I can run the copy_ntrboot script, etc.

But after doing step 13;

  • The console will boot into Luma3DS configuration. Check these options (press A) then press start:
    -"Show NAND or user string in System Settings"
    -"Patch ARM9 access"

I then get an error, reading exactly;

“An error has occurred:
Failed to apply 1 FIRM patch(es).
Press any button to shutdown.”

Any subsequent attempts to load up the 3DS with that SD card in the slot without remove the luma/etc files that godmode9 put on there just results in the same error message showing on start-up.

I went back and did the tutorial again from the start, a couple of times, but all resulted in the same error.

Using my second SD card, I can now boot into this godmode9 menu no problem;

But any attempts to put in an SD card with cfw on it result in the never-ending black screen, or the error message if the SD card still has the files from post-step 12 of the r4i-sdhc tutorial on it.

However, the 3DS now boots up correctly after a few seconds with a blank SD card in it! So that’s progress... but I’m at a loss on where to go from here, with both the flashcart not being picked up my New 3DS XL (JPN region), and with it refusing to load if there’s any cfw on the SD card other than godmode9.

Any advice welcome!

Please answer a few questions to make things a bit clearer.
  • Can you now boot into GodMode9 without ntrboot?
  • Did you use the "download package" linked in this highly questionable guide? It is grossly outdated and no wonder the old Luma3DS version throws the infamous "Failed to apply 1 FIRM patch(es)." with newer official firmware.
  • Can you access files on the SD if inserted after booting into GodMode9? Can you copy files from SD to RAMDRIVE?

Try starting here:
https://3ds.hacks.guide/restoring-updating-cfw
with a blank, FAT32 formatted and h2testw/F3 checked SD.

Home Menu not showing anything when having an ntrboot cart inserted is normal and expected.

Yes, R4i-B9S Flashcard is only for flashing the primary hack "boot9strap" to the 3DS by using a magnet and holding the button combo in sleep mode. The card will not appear in the System menu.

As we had this behavior with issues when a SD Card is insert. Check your SD-Card Slot as it may be dirty. Blow in it and try to clean it with IPA (Isopropanol).

This is the latest uptodate guide you should had followed to hack the system by NTRboot https://3ds.hacks.guide/installing-boot9strap-(ntrboot)

And you may try updating B9S to latest version (if 1.4 is not installed by the flashcard) https://3ds.hacks.guide/updating-b9s
EDIT: The Advantage of B9S 1.4 is, it can indicate errors of missing or corrupted boot.firm images.

If people would just stick to that. I've lost track of how many "definitive", "ultimate", "easy", "all-in-one", "updated", "best" and whatnot for praising adjectives guides are out there (including videos).
This one from the r4i-sdhc.com site above dates back to 2017 – as can be seen by GodMode9 v1.3.1 and Luma3DS v8.1.1 which are part of the packages. I'm astonished that the download links are not dead yet. Besides: The packages contain a lot of unneeded rubbish as well.

And you may try updating B9S to latest version (if 1.4 is not installed by the flashcard) https://3ds.hacks.guide/updating-b9s
This shouldn't do harm, but it isn't really needed either. Other than on B9S v1.0 there shouldn't be a desperate need to update (oldest B9S version will only boot Luma3DS v7.1).

This worked, thank you so much to you both, KleinesSinchen and Sypherone.

I'm not sure how I didn't come across that page yesterday... Though it isn't linked on the Troubleshooting page of 3ds.hacks, which was my first port of call the other day. I think also it having been so long since the issue started, and me receiving the the R4i cart meant that even with the notes I took whilst trying to fix it originally back, in August, I was a bit turned-around and looking for any relevant tutorial online that might help.

I'm still at a loss for what caused the issue originally OTL... Hopefully it should be smooth sailing now, as it's booting up with no issues.
