Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox all to skip E3 2023, according to report

sdasdsadsa.png

E3 2023 has been hyping itself up as a grand return to form, with the annual event to make its return to Los Angeles after years of cancellations due to covid. However, a report from "multiple knowledgeable sources" over at IGN claims that the big three--Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation, will all be skipping E3 2023. The last E3 to take place, in 2019, saw a lack of support from PlayStation, who did not appear at the convention, and held their own separate press conference outside of E3, though both Nintendo and Xbox featured large booths at E3 2019. Last year also saw both Nintendo and PlayStation not make an appearance at Europe's equivalent annual show, Gamescom. A recent interview with Xbox CEO Phil Spencer reveals that Xbox wants to support E3 and the ESA, but hints at Xbox's press conference merely taking place at a convenient time with E3's event, rather than at the show itself.

Xbox is on the board of the ESA, and I think a successful and healthy ESA is critical to what we're trying to go do. So we place our showcase, like we always have done, at a time where hopefully it's convenient for press and even consumers that are going to the E3 event, and that's what we're trying to do now. We will continue to work with ESA in terms of their plans. As I said, we're on the board, and we want to make sure that we are doing everything we can to help make the E3 successful.

E3 2023 will take place in Los Angeles from June 13 to June 16th.

Just kill E3. It's been irrelevant for so many years now.

Big 3: crap we can't blame COVID anymore let's just not go.
I remember that a lot that many used "Covid" as an excuse to avoid doing their job. There are still a lot who wish we'd go back to that time... 🤬

Well, that would be unfortunate but not surprising. E3 really hasn't been exciting since the late 2000s for me...
For me until it had M$ and Sony have been awesome just to get totally disappointed at the end :toot:

And when they show something that isn't booooring for quite some time it's also usually only amazing until it releases cause it's usually just BIG hype to make me so damn disappointed after playing "X" game, it's beyond depressing

CES is still huge, but E3 is going away. That's the digital/physical divide i suppose. when demos and trailers are just as easily put online, and you can save absolute bank by not hiring event staff or giving away promotional materials, it's pretty obvious why they wouldn't attend. E3 will have to pivot and have more selling points than nothing at all.

so here's the question. What do y'all think could save E3? Making it indie focused? More of a convention or tournament? Showcase niche gaming devices and experiences? Showcase new gaming hardware mods and related stuff? Just plain become the CES of gaming?

More like E0.

When was the last time E3 was truly relevant anyway?
Before COVID ruined everything.

I like the idea of it becoming an indie showcase platform. Anything that gives small devs a soapbox is okay by me!

E3 was already fucking shit and you can't blame that on Covid somehow. You're pulling the same excuse as people/companies when they don't want to face reality.. Blame it on something else.

The problem with E3 is that it's too corporate rather than gamer-friendly.

I thought E3 was fine pre-COVID though. But since the big 3 have already moved on, I say just give it to the indie devs.

Fair enough. I'd watch E3 every year despite being very unhappy with it and did mostly for PlayStation/Nintendo's E3.

I remember Microsoft giving away Xbox 360 Slims to reporters there and I wish I'd have gotten one, too. :P

It will be filled with more mobile centric devices that can play games, laptops that are going to be released soon and things like that.
It will be a showcase of gaming devices instead of publishers showing games.

It's sad to see so many people that want E3 to die. Back in the 90s, before the modern internet, E3 was a special time when every developer, publisher and console maker brought their best stuff. It's where all the best games and the next gen consoles were announced. The E3 issues of gaming magazines like Game Informer and Nintendo Power were the best issues , and something you looked forward to. You could tell just from that E3 week whether it was going to be a good year in gaming. It was always a dream of mine to actually go there.

Sure Nintendo and Sony can do a Direct whenever they want now, but because of that, it's no longer anything special, just a longform advertisement.

It's not so much "E3 should die!" rather E3 needs to reform.
