At the end it would have increased the price of the console, because they won't go for less profit. When the PS2 was new DVD players were pretty expensive. A gaming console with that functionality and a not much higher price than just a video player was very appealing.

When the Wii entered the market virtually everybody had a DVD player and a new one didn't cost much anymore.

Funny. I didn't think of linking to that thread here, but it fits perfectly.
A direct consequence of Nintendo having considered supporting video DVD at some point. The drive was prepared to read standard DVDs -- and does.
After Wii release without official DVD video ability, and the possibilities of modchips and even softmods allowing the usage of burned games, they logically removed that functionality from the drive firmware in newer iterations.

OK, I Wanna Say 4 Things

1. I Understand that it Would Have Increased the Price of the Console, But, Come On!
2. I also didn't think of linking to that thread here, but i agree that it fits perfectly.
3. I Knew That DVD players were pretty expensive, But, How Expensive Is It?
4. I'm Not Disappointed at Nintendo, I Just Want to Know Why They Didn't Want to Pay a Licensing Free.

I suppose it's the same reason as to why Microsoft didn't let the Xbox 360 itself be able to read Blu-Rays, and left support for HD DVDs to an accessory that was abandonded less than a year and a half later: so they don't give money to other companies, more specifically rival companies for each system sold, which I guess it can amount so some large fee if the machine ends up being successful like the WIi ended up being.

But to be fair, I've changed enough PS2 lenses and seen enough PS3 suffer from issues to know that I wouldn't have given too much use to that feature if it was there. And if someone wants to watch SD content today, WiiMC and a USB is miles better as far as avoiding wear and tear...

Edit: Early DVD players could have prices from around 500/600$ to well over the four digits, and I remember reading about one company selling one model for I think it was 20.000$. Absolute madness.

Their prices would get lower and lower throughout the 2000s, but they were VERY expensive early on, just like CD players before DVDs were a thing, and systems like the Sega CD being super expensive too because they could be used to play music on top of playing games.

Not Necessarily (I Think), But I HAVE Used WiiMC in Dolphin Emulator Before, and it Works! I Was Able to Watch YT, DailyMotion Videos There. Heck! I Could Even See The Root of My Vitrual SD Card There.

Ok, the console has been out of production for 5 years, Bin N will never change the behavior of the console.

Since start there are some alternatives to play DVD content on the console.

When the console was launch, there is no so much war about be able to reproduce other content different to games, like later Sony and Microsoft was trying to fight against each other. so for 14 years ago playing DVD on a console was no a real need nor a surplus.

I don't know where we can go for long unsuported product.

I think I don't understand what you mean by this. What I mean is that WIiMC does a pretty good job providing the possibility of watching videos without having to rely on optical disc media, but with a simple USB device, or a fast enough SD card.

1. I Said "Not Necessarily" Because I Don't Have a Real Wii Anymore, and I Have An Emulator (Dolphin)
2. I Mean, WiiMC DOES Do a Good Job Providing the Possibilities of Watching Videos without Having to rely On an Optical Disc Media, and it Did a Good Job on ACTUALLY Working on Dolphin, and It did a Great Job on Working with a Simple USB Drive, or a fast Enough Card Inserted into Your Wii

Ah, I see. While there are simpler ways to watch stuff if you're on a device that can emulate a Wii, It's kinda cool to be able to check WiiMC or other hombrew to see if it works there.

Talking about this reminded me that for some reason it became sort of a trend for people to show that they're "watching anime on their Wiis" on the Wii subreddits with WiiMC. I don't get trends much but hey, if they're having fun it's fine by me.

From what I can gather it costs $2 to licence DVD playback pre device. The Wii sold over 101 million units.

If you were Nintendo would you really want to pay $202,000,000 to licence DVD playback when you didn't have to?

I Don't Know, Since I Don't Have a Choice for That Question. HOWEVER, isn't $2 Short (Nearly), While $202M Dollars is BIG?
for a Question Like Yours, I Might Go with NO, Since I Won't Think About Paying a Lot of Dollars Just for a DVD Playback.

Yes, if you can sell more consoles with that argument.
Yes, if you can increase the price per console by $5 offering DVD playback.

The point is that those two were given for the PS2 (and would have been for GC if they had installed a full-sized disc drive) but not for the Wii -- too late.
