Following with the surge of retro games getting PC ports, this time the focus is on Streets of Rage 2, where a group of fans have created both a Windows and Mac ports of the game, without relying on any emulation and entirely reverse engineering the Sega classic, with the project being codenamed "Streets of Rage 2: New Era".

Not only that, but the developers have gone beyond just porting the game.
The game features 2 different modes, Classic, where you can play a faithful recreation of the game on PC/Mac, and 30th Anniversary Mode, where you can enjoy the game with a vast range of changes and QoL features, like widescreen, bugfixes and more fluid controls.
The creators have also added an online functionality to the port, in the form of multiplayer with up to 4 people playing at the same time.

The requirement to play the port is to get your official Streets of Rage 2 ROM, be it the user's dumped copy, or the recommended method by the devs, which is purchasing a copy of Streets of Rage 2 from Steam, with the ROM being included in the package and easily copied over for usage with the ports.

Streets of Rage 2: New Era Description said:
A fan-made port of Streets of Rage 2 to modern platforms.

That's a tough question. This game is more faithful to the original genesis/megadrive version. So basically, is just a "Enhanced" Street so of rage 2 and ONLY that ONE game. Streets of rage remake aims to bring the total package of content from all the games. All three genesis/megadrive games PLUS the Master System & game gear versions, with more features and content. New characters, gameplay changes, stages, story, etc.

If you just want a better version of Streets of Rage 2, then this game does the job from what I tried. (Or you can play one of the dozen mods found around the web or steam workshop) :P

If you want more than just Streets of Rage 2, then Streets of Rage Remake may be more appealing. (With more content and not leaving version of the game behind) :ninja:

Yes. A watch of a TAS Tool assisted Speedrun later, there is quite some bugs to behold. Besides the ones exploited by speedruns, there also just other things about it as well. I believe the youtube channel of the person responsible for this game's port has some videos showing off the bugs. There is bugs between all three games on the genesis/megadrive.

While personally, I don't know if it's a bug or not, the delay of movement after performing attacks was an hindrance. There is delay after hitting someone (Similar to Street Fighter) and after the character performs their attack animation. It mostly makes finding a proper rhythm for the combos a bit frustrating that wasn't in the first or third game. :ninja:

NOTE: To the people comparing various games with Streets of Rage 2. Yes, it's a popular game for many people who owned a Genesis/Megadrive. Probably in the same way how Final Fight or TMNT Turtles In Time may be popular to people who own a Super Nintendo. Having played all three, and don't think any are bad, I think Streets of Rage does come out on top. This is in terms of overall quality, but if I had to cherry pick things about them, that is a way different discussion that will change my mind on my decision :ninja:

@ShadowOne333 Just a notice, if you wanted something more to show than just a picture, there was a trailer for this released. :P

I think you basically hit it on the head with this. I love the original and the remake. I'm also thrilled to see something like this come out to fill the gap and be a proper revive of the original genesis run.

Hopefully they cover the other games and give them the same treatment.

Edit: I almost forgot about this too, I remember doing Mania difficulty runs it was a thing to exploit the invincibility frames that came from certain animations and movements just to get through.

This is one of those games that I still to this day do not understand the hype surrounding it.

I've always considered FInal Fight to be the absolutely superior game, between the two. And the TMNT games are better than both.

And Violent Storm is better than any of those previously mentioned. I'd LOVE to see that one appear on an arcade collection of beat 'em ups.
Wrong opinion

Having played a bit of all of them, I still prefer Streets of Rage so yeah, tastes I guess

Violent Storm is probably the best '90's beat-'em-up arcade game that never get any kind of home console port.

It plays very much like Final Fight, or any game of its era, really, but the graphics, the controls and the music blow everything else away from that time.

All three of the selectable characters have some sort of unique combat ability, and the fighting mechanics are much deeper than probably any similar title that I've played up until TMNT - Shredder's Revenge. The music is ridiculously catchy, and still runs through my head at random sometimes.

Being able to pick up a piglet off the ground and having it turn into a football that could be used as a projectile weapon was a nice touch.

I had a hard time finding a working version a few years back until I finally stumbled across the working ROM and the correct MAME build, but if you like any of the above mentioned titles, you have got to play this one. Violent Storm would likely be in everyone's top three beat-'em-ups of all time if it were ever made available for play at home.

I am pretty sure that my pFBA build on Switch came with this included, which is available if you can find it. Check the common places, and one of them should have it.

To see the first game at 60FPS would surely be shocking! :P
Sadly no wii port
Well unless the wii can run unity programs, then that's debatable. This was made using unity. So it should be easily able to put on other systems with homebrew tools. :ninja:

I have heard of this game and seen it in action. Being arcade exclusive makes it more elusive than console games. There probably plenty of arcade games that can benefit from console ports. Of course back in the day, that mean compromise some of the game for better or worst. Now and days there isn't any of that since it's just emulation. (Unless they have to apply censorship for some reason. Example Sunset Riders on switch/ps4)

That's awesome news. Just bought it on Steam and tried quickly an online match with a random player. Worked fine.

Gotta test this later with 4 players on Mania. Might be awesome, but also a mess with dozens of thugs running like hell.

If they recreated the executable part of the game without any use of the original, then this isn’t a “port.” It’s a recreation that can utilize the original assets which sounds more like ScummVM.

If they really did write a new engine without any of the original source that just uses the rom file (which they aren’t distributing) as an asset, I’m not sure SEGA could stop this even if they wanted.

Hey, so I found someone going by the name of "Tuga Studios" who's been reselling free fangames for profit.

tugastudios . itch . io/streets-of-rage-retro-for-pc

I found this to be the case for several of the games they have listed on itch.io (and I have done what I can to report them there, on YouTube, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, etc -- ofc very little will be done with just one person reporting these).

I wasn't able to confirm whether this was the game they're trying to sell, but it at least appears to be at first glance.

------------------------

Anyone who can help confirm this and (assuming this is the case, like almost everything else they have listed there)- feel free to report them on any platform you find it.

Disregard. Upon further inspection, it appears what they are selling is at least a different fan project and not the one discussed here. Still scummy, but at least it isn't this one.
