What do you want to see in the Switch's successor?

I'd like to see a return to the home and handheld being seperate as I find the switch to be too large to use as a handheld and too weak to be a home console.

I'd like a handheld that is pocketable and a home console that feels like a step up performance wise unlike the switch which felt pretty much the same as the Wii U performance wise.

I'd like the successor to be able to "dock" wirelessly so we can finally have the second screen functionality of the Wii U gamepad, but done right. Combined with the possibility to use it in multiplayer games with multiple handhelds connected together wirelessly, and the TV acting as a status screen or a main overview for all the players to use. Imagine how games like Zelda Four Swords could work on this, it could be great. And a 3DS/DS addon to allow playing your 3DS/DS cartridges using both screens, the same thing that people made so many mockups of for the Wii U, could be a good idea for it. I don't think Nintendo are going to try the Wii U gamepad concept again, when they're burned by a gimmick, they usually don't make another serious attempt at it. But you never know, Nintendo are always full of surprises.
They could even make an optional second screen accessory for it, to enable dual screen play without using a TV.
I want it to be like a dockable 3DS. Some games like Fire Emblem benefit greatly from a second screen while other games like Mario Kart don't need one. The 3D effect would improve presentation in handheld mode. I doubt this will actually happen because producing two different interfaces for docked and handheld mode would lengthen development time and so would adding a 3D effect which you can only see in handheld mode and on 3D TV's.
That seems like a bad idea, you'd only have one screen in docked mode which means any game made for it wouldn't be able to use the second screen for anything more than moving the HUD and menu options onto since they would still need to work docked, it would just be pointless added bulk. Although I like the clamshell form factor.

But your idea could work together with my idea.
I think the DS gimmick is dead and buried though. A single larger screen is more useful than two smaller screens next to eachother, you can make the HUD elements smaller so most of the screen is dedicated to the gameplay anyway, and menus don't need to be on a second screen when the main screen is touch. There weren't really many legitimate uses for the DS' dual screens, games either used the bottom screens for menus and HUD or just combined both screens into a tall screen. The World Ends With You might be one of the most unique uses of it and that was still able to be ported to devices with a single screen later on, the second screen wasn't necessary for it to work. It allowed for more screen real estate while keeping the device pocketable, but you still felt like you didn't have enough screen real estate, when games dedicated half of it to menus and HUD so you were left with just the tiny upper screen for all the gameplay.
Personally, I'm kind of glad to be rid of that gimmick, because it allowed the Switch to exist. And games just look so good on the bigger screen of the Switch, even though it hurt portability, it also allowed full console quality games on a handheld, which if attempted on a 3DS successor, it would just be a bad experience because you'd have to squint to make anything out.

I think the next one will retain the joycon feature, but will be console rather than handheld. It seems to be the way forward to increase capabilities given the switch is limited on room for components. I think the handheld/console thing will see the development of two separate systems.

Nintendo consoles whether home or portable were never known for powerful hardware. Heck, the 3DS feels like it's comparable to the PSP in terms of graphics, but far superior thanks to its spectacular catalog.

I just love playing Mario Kart 7 (online) on it.

Nintendo does have "lastability" in their consoles mainly due to number of titles and how playable they are. People seem to fall out of love quicker with Sega and Sony consoles.

Some of my wants don't even require new hardware, however:

Ability to backup all save games - Most of the games I actually play (Pokemon) have no way to backup the save without using homebrew apps.

Better online functionality - its 2023 and the OG Xbox did a better job all the way back in 2002. Voice chat / messaging is a must.

Better backwards compatibility - On my Xbox I can play (some) physical games I purchased back on the OG Xbox, or digital games I purchased back on the Xbox 360. I know that is kinda not possible on the Switch with physical games, however the 3DS did backwards compatibility via emulation well. For example you could buy past Pokemon games where WiFi trading was possible and they even made the IR functionality work in the Gen 2 games, with added Pokebank Support. Some effort went in to bring older games up to a modern standard is what i'm saying. I'm sure many of us would happily purchase older GameCube games for a few £, I personally don't want to subscribe to play older N64 games.

Better hardware - 1080p 60fps should not be a problem for any game to achieve on next gen Switch hardware

Better battery life - looking at what modern phones / tablets can do I feel Nintendo can do better here

Nintendo seal of quality - stop putting profit before players (won't happen i know), again this is not really a console related one but I feel Nintendo should be holding themselves / studios developing their games accountable to higher standards. We pretty much got 3 Pokémon games in 12 months, its quite clear Diamond / Pearl and Scarlet / Violet in particular we're released well before they we're ready to cash in on Christmas.

They should really do it considering GCN has been supported since the Wii, Wii U, and the Switch, too. Even if limited, but Nintendo could very well have GameCube games on the eShop and let gamers use their GCN controllers (and Wiimotes, too).

Hori made GCN-style Classic Controller for the Wiimote and it's awesome although many never knew about it since it wasn't released in the West:

61x9ANuCO7L._AC_SL1200_.jpg

It's available in black, white, and blue. I have the black version.

Anyway, what I'd like for the next Switch:

- Controller with analog triggers.
- Backwards compatibility with DS, 3DS, and Switch games.
- Background menu music for the main menu and the eShop.
- GameCube games on the eShop and controller port on the dock.

And the Switch "2" in itself, just a major upgrade in terms of technology than a slight upgrade.
I agree with everything you listed. Though, it seems extremely unlikely.

I miss the days when the DS was compatible with GBA games and the 3DS was compatible with DS games, and the Wii was compatible with GameCube games and the Wii U was compatible with Wii games. I guess it's not too much of a stretch to hope for backwards compatibility with the next console, I just wouldn't expect it at all.

Also, I'm curious about that controller, you said it's for the Wiimote. Is it used in place of a Wiimote, or does it just plug into one like the classic controller ?

Edit: I read more answers and there are a few things that I want added. Better online (voice chat, messaging, and PLEASE get rid of those damn friend codes and just let us have gamertags. PLEASE), controllers that don't require batteries and don't drift, and backwards compatibility.

Connects as a CC.

It still boggles my mind the "Pro" controller only had digital triggers while the original had analog triggers. So, for me, I find the original CC more collectible than the revised edition.

I bought three CC controllers and plan on switching the cable to come out thru the top as it should have been, and maybe switch the analog sticks to Xbox One-like if it fits.

And it is usable for GCN games as I read (via Nintendont). It has all buttons and more.

controllers which are actually comfortable and usable, analog triggers on said controllers' shoulders, power which competes, purchasable older titles from legacy systems (without that shitty dark filter they threw on virtual console), better online netcode in their games (rollback for Smash), banning the irdeto corporation from building "solutions" on their services, an exploit for homebrewers, banning the pokemon company from releasing a game every few months on the system, better battery...

...there's a lot.

A steam client integration.

More serious answer (and i man this) : that Nintendo breaks their "fail one, succeed one" routine. It's like every other console they release flops for some reason. I hope that won't happen in the(near?) future.

I think the Pro controller should really just be a wireless GameCube controller with two shoulder buttons and clicky sticks.

You consider GCN a failure?

NES
SNES
N64
GCN
Wii
So far, so good.

Wii U? Good console, but a massive commercial failure. I wonder if people in years to come will remember the Wii U (in terms of gaming of course) or even what it was.

Whatever quirk Nintendo goes with, I really truly do hope they bring the dock back. They probably won't, but I can hope.
I think it's not a farfetch wish at all. The dock is what makes Switch special and have set a trend for others such as Steam Deck. Besides, manufacturing docks is doable even in these convoluted times.

Really hard to say. VR both does and doesn't make sense for them, given their pedigree with motion controls but also their insistence on using outdated hardware that guarantees profit on each unit sold. And even despite the release of Steam Deck and similar devices, I'm not sure they'll want to abandon the portable/hybrid space since neither Sony nor MS seem to have any interest in competing there.

They may very well not release a successor at all, but instead just the fabled Switch Pro with certain third-party titles exclusive to it, and ride out the 2020s that way. Would potentially push all combined Switch model sales over the 200 million mark.

You guys just won't quit with the "Switch Pro" nonsense do ya. If Nintendo had done it, they'd had released it when the OLED model came out, but they didn't.

The successor is coming.

A true successor would mean Nintendo charging $500 to $600 because they insist on profiting from each console sold, and the hardware would still be outdated relative to the Steam Deck. Why bother with that when their target audience will keep vacuuming up any minor revision they make? Slap 12 - 16GB of RAM in it, a couple more CUs on the existing architecture, and charge $50 more than OLED. Profit margin would still be huge, and that valuable 8 to 16 audience can still get their parents to buy them one. And sure, I suppose you could call that a "Switch 2," but it'd be rather disingenuous.

  • Really good specs, comparable or superior to Steam Deck.
  • Retrocompatible with Switch games, with patches that improve those games perf & res like Xbox did.
  • Compatible with Switch gamepads (and GC ones by USB adapter)
  • Analog triggers, haptic response
  • NO DRIFTING joysticks!
  • More comfortable joycons
  • Better wifi and bluetooth coverage
  • Better UI and OS
  • More customizable, better looking Miis.
  • Decent online multiplayer (for once) with dedicated servers, audio chat, no friend codes...
In other words, I want a Switch 2.0 that instead of innovating with new mechanics it improves the Switch formula.
