So I used Checkpoint to make a backup of my Dragon Quest VIII(cia file) game save on my CFW 3DS LL and transferred it over to my other CFW 2DS LL console. I used FBI to install th gane cia and was told to run the game before restoring the save in Checkpoint on my 2DS LL. The game started up fine, but then it said something like the extra content that it was trying to create needed something to write to. It then asked me to reinsert the SD card and/or power off the system. If somebody know what's going on, any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

The game probably uses extdata, and if you didn't back up its extdata with Checkpoint too, the game is confused when you're using the save without its extdata..

Thanks for the reply. Yes. I have heard of that before. I took some pictures earlier of what is on my source 3DS LL sd card and my target 2DS LL console. Hopefully, this could help explain my issue better.

3DS: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1InWPpsULylTfxK7S_drqWlkPhQgwf5oO

2DS: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1J3rPxNb2N73dc6eiDWjDqXZ5mJwQ_Q1w

I also made a video on my 2DS trying to restore the game.

The extdata problem makes sense. I still have my save, but how do I backup extdata? And where does it go on the sd?

Press x in checkpoint to show exdata.

Alright. Then repeat what I did before with my game save? Backup extdata on 3DS, put extdata on pc, then put the 2ds sd card into the pc and drag the extdata in the folder with my save? Then do I restore extdata using Checkpoint on my target 2DS? On the PC, I am unable to see extdata on both the 3DS and 2DS SD cards, by the way.

Yeah, but first make a save for the game on the target system.

Yes. That is what I am trying to do, but it keeps giving me an error saying that there was a problem while the sd card was being written to. As in my video above. It happens when I click on the game icon to run it, it starts up, but gives me that message.

Can you load the save fine in the 3ds LL? If so, run Checkpoint and backup extdata for that game. Extdata go into a separate folder inside sd:/3ds/Checkpoint iirc, not the same as the one you find backed up saves. So search the Checkpoint folder until you find it. And copy the directory to the target sd card, not just the extdata file, in order for Checkpoint to find it on the 2DS LL system.
The extdata file/folder shouldn't be hidden btw.

Alright. I will give that a try as well. and, yes, I can run the game on my 3DS LL I think. I may need to go back and see if it says "success" when I back it up though. I don't recall seeing that message before. So, the path should be 3ds/Checkpoint/(my extdata)? And I move the entire 3ds folder with Checkpoint in it to my 2DS LL, correct?
I have another video of my 2DS LL and looking for extdata in Checkpoint.

Update: Ok. This is what happens on my 3DS LL when I run the game/save. And the Checkpoint and save paths and folders on my 3DS sd card. My other games' extdata folders are empty as well, but they start up fine.

You press x when you're in Checkpoint, then create a backup of the extdata. You're not doing it correctly..

From the pics, copy the DCIM folder that's on the root of the sdcard to the 2ds's sd card, and run the game again, it'll find the pics you've taken this time (postcards too, maybe).

I see. I'll give it another try. So go into Checkpoint highlight the Dragon Quest icon on the top screen, select the title by pressing A, and then press x? And, just to be clear, I do this on the 3DS? Also, I have noticed that game saves are usually .dat files, but mine is a .bin. Is that alright?

Update: This is what I got when I did the above (pressed x on the title below "New"). Pressing A gives me the option to restore, and pressing x on "New" does nothing. And, on my sd card, the folders aren't hidden btw.

In Checkpoint press X, "extdata" will turn red on the top screen text, it will display only games that have extdata, go to DQVIII and create "new".

Ok. Yes. I see red, extdata. I think I managed to back it up, and it asked me to name it as well. So, now do I insert the 3DS sd card in my pc, drag the extdata out on the desktop, insert the 2DS sd card, and put the extdata backup in the Checkpoint folder? And, I also do the DCIM step too, right? And again, for my save file, is .bin ok?

I think so, it doesn't what extension it has, as long as it's a save backup created with Checkpoint.

Ok. I once again ran into the same error, despite following the above. Should I use a different methid and/or software like jksm? I will include my sd directory images soon.

Don't mind the DCIM folder. Have you restored the extdata in Checkpoint? You have to do that, if you didn't.

Yes. I believe I have restored the extdata. To be clear, I went into Checkpoint, highlighted the title, pressed X then restore. Nothing really happened in terms of a download status bar etc. So I exited Checkpoint and same error showed up when I started the game again. Do you mean to delete the DCIM folder off the card?

Then i have no idea why it's still asking for extdata. Try restoring extdata first then restoring your save (2nd), maybe the restore order is flipped.
Yes, you could try with jksm too, doubt it'll fix it but worth a try i guess?

No, i meant just keep it there.

Also, goes without saying that you'd need the game update installed (if there's any). Same with dlcs if you had dlcs installed in your old 3ds, makes sense to have them installed again (save requires them).

Ok. I'll leave the DCIM folder where it is then. And, I'm going to give JKSM a quick try as well.

I don't think there's an update for DQ VIlI, but maybe the CFW? Do you think I may need to update Luma? I also think the dlcs were there already when I was playing on the 3ds.
