I read that the controls are very frustrating on the Switch. How true is that in your experience, if you've played it?

Personally, I don't mind motion sensor games and if it's fun then all the more! :)

If you are not limited to a Switch Lite I would suggest the Switch release. The switch release gives you 2 choices for control. The original motion control system, or a new button layout method. The motion control on the Switch release works a lot better than it did on WII. The button choice is always there, but I find it rather awkward compared to the motion control system. Also using button controls removes full camera control with the right stick due to it being use for sword movements. Overall the motion controls in the original were not that bad. They took a bit of time to get used to but eventually they just click. In my 100% run of the game I think I maybe had 3 times when it was giving me issues. Another quick note is that the Switch release cuts out a bunch of the unnecessary dialogue and tutorials, and allows for Hero Mode from the start of the game.

I was skeptical about whether SSHD would be an improvement over my last playthrough on Dolphin. But I found it on sale (at the Tesco supermarket…) and have been pleasantly surprised. The motion controls aren't quite as accurate as on Wii, where they have the possibility to recalibrate automatically using the IR pointer, but having a full set of buttons to use, and the higher-resolution graphics without the faff of using an emulator have sold me on the HD port.

You can regain camera control by holding L.

Didn't know that actually. I mean you already center the camera with L so I don't really see a massive point, but I guess the option is there. I would still for sure suggest the motion control system. The game is kinda designed around the entire system and controls worse with buttons.

If your desire is to experience strictly in motion control, you might prefer the Wii version. The Switch version does motion control quite well, but without a censor bar, it means that the pointing mechanic is constantly desyncs from where it should be. Even still I wouldn't say it's a dealbreaker by any means, plus the Switch version brought some quality of life improvements that are really hard to go back from. Big bonus of course is that the Switch version does also offer traditional controls, and the ability to toggle when and where (if at all) you'd still like to use motion controls. Having beat the game on both versions, I do prefer the Switch version, but the Wii original certainly does have it's merits for those that prefer motion controls. Just try and use a Wii Motion Plus controller over a standard Wiimote with the motion plus accessory, that really can be a dealbreaker in it's own right.

Isn't the camera centring with ZL ('trigger'/L2), same as targeting, rather than L ('bumper'/L1)?

Definitely Switch for 60fps, faster text and skipable cutscenes. I played it with a pro controller and found the joystick controls are just fine most of the time and are still workable if a bit fiddly in a few sections.

Controls are crap on Wii AND Switch. But Switch might be slightly less crappy. But unfortunately controls are not the only issue with this game. Tha stamina bar is a huge pain and hinders movement & action tremendously, basically sucking all the fun away. The quest is also very repetitive with a lot of backtracking, you'll do the same dungeons over and over. Combat is a complete disaster.

In shorter words, no matter the version be prepared for a lot of tedium and frustration. If that's your thing you'll love the game.

Skyward Sword is by far the worst main Zelda game, and it's funny reflecting on the rave reviews it got back when it was released.

I've tried on both and honestly they're equally as bad. If you have a retro setup, CRT etc then just do the Wii version. It at the very least looks fine with decent component cables.

The controls are frustrating on Wii too. Some enemies need to be attacked with the sword in a specific way and half the time the sword doesn't swing the way you want it to. The drone bug (can't remember the name of it) controls poorly leading to making a lot of mistakes, but luckily it only takes a few seconds to retry and the puzzles are not difficult so it's not a major roadblock, it's just annoying. And the MotionPlus drifts a lot and needs to be recalibrated frequently.
I haven't played the Switch version, so I'm not sure how they translated the motion controls to traditional controls or how well it works, but regardless, the Switch version gives you the option to pick between the two, so I'd say it's superior for that reason alone - you can pick whichever control method works better for you. And I assume with the much newer technology in the JoyCons the motion controls will be more accurate and reliable than the Wii. Even if that's not saying much.

Skyward Sword sucks.

But I think the Switch version toned down some of the worst offending aspects, such as never-ending tutorial messages, so if you're dead-set on playing I guess that version.

My short take on why SS sucks: it's not just the Simon Says motion combat, it's the annoying repetition of zones in linear fashion and CTRL+C/CTRL+V use of a certain boss, on top of the never-ending tutorial messages from Fi.

Skyward Sword is the reason Breath of the Wild is the way it is; a 180 from SS.
