How can controllers get this filthy

Recently I was looking to buy a Wii Classic Controller and luckily bought one like new without the box, but the majority are dirty with the analog sticks yellowed, the cable and d-pad look the same way, too.

I have bought dirty controllers which I was not aware of as they were black so it hides it, though when you try to use it you can feel there's something blocking or sticky.

This is just god damn filthy. If people want to sell their controllers at least try to clean them.

But what did you expect? In my experience, most people don't take good care of their electronics. You were lucky to find that clean controller. If the stuff is dirty and you still want it because of rarity, just try to haggle the price down. Then if you buy it, it's cleaning time. Most sellers won't bother cleaning their stuff for sale, unless they want to sell at a better price.

I bought some nes controllers that were disgusting a long time ago, so I swapped shells with my clean, yet not working controllers. I'm a clean freak to an extent.

Simple, playing on it with dirty hands. And you know how kids are, their hands are always dirty.

Correct, but getting a controller that dirty is utterly disgusting.

And then they just post it on eBay as is without cleaning it.

Be glad people put that filth up for sale, they're usually not expecting a boat load from it anyway.

imo, stickiness and dirt and other crap is fine. But I will always try to avoid yellowed plastic if possible, no only was that caused by a smoker, but it's often a sign that the plastic is more brittle than it should be

Damn, that's pretty nasty. I must have gotten lucky when I needed one a couple of months ago. Remembered my kids still had one at their mothers that no one was using so they brought it to me. The thing looks almost new which I thought was nice for it being 13 years old.

I noticed that the thumb sticks on the Classic Controllers (as well as the Pro variant) get sticky when stored in a closed environment for too long. Just like with PS2 controllers. I think it's the rubber material makes the discharge when inside a less ventilated or humid area..

Yeah, unfortunately rubber-like stuff like that just tend to breakdown overtime, leaving a mess, and when you try to clean it, it'll usually just come off completely

looks like he ran out of toilet paper and opted to use his controller instead

I plan on switching the Wii CC sticks with Xbox One sticks and relocate the cable to come out the top like this dude did it:

The Wii CC I bought looks brand new, but I might still do it, anyway.

Actually, on the topic of rubber-like material, in my experience, the material they used for the 3DS's circle pad won't last the test of time. I currently have a total of 6 consoles from the 3DS family (I know I know, I'm crazy), all of which coming from different places and in different conditions.

An o3DS, obtained Christmas 2011 new, circle pad deteriorated
An o3DS XL, obtained Christmas 2013 new, circle pad deteriorated
A n3DS, obtained October 2017 used, circle pad partially deteriorated
A n3DS LL, obtained October 2020 new, imported from Japan, circle pad good
A n2DS XL, obtained December 2021 used, circle pad good
An o3DS XL Panda, seemingly used briefly at NOE for play testing, obtained 8 days ago, circle pad good

The main difference between my consoles with bad circle pads vs good circle pads, is that the ones with bad circle pads I played on HEAVILY, while the other ones I haven't really touched other than to install CFW and play a short game or two. The n2DS XL was honestly pretty close to new, not showing that much signs of wear, and the o3DS XL Panda seemed to have only been used to test one game (unless they for some reason completely wiped the console everytime they needed another game tested).
