Days Gone director blames "woke reviewers" for poor sales and reception

dsadsadasdasd.png

After claiming that game piracy was leading to "money out of [his] pocket" and that gamers shouldn't complain about games not getting sequels if they don't buy them at launch for full price, the director of Days Gone has gone on to make another amusing statement. In a response to a fan who was "blown away" by how much he enjoyed Days Gone and confused why it wasn't universally praised, the game's writer and director John Garvin claimed that there were three reasons why the game didn't do well, commercially or critically.

Three reasons:
1. it had tech issues like bugs, streaming and frame rate;
2. it had reviewers who couldn’t be bothered to actually play the game
3. And three, it had woke reviewers who couldn’t handle a gruff white biker looking at his date's ass

He blamed reviewers for either not actually playing his game, or on reviewers for being too woke to understand the story of Days Gone, which consisted of a guy trying to reunite with his wife after a zombie apocalypse. In GBAtemp's own, possibly woke opinion, after not playing the game at all, we found it to have a tired, generic take on a genre that had already been done to death, and that, "Days Gone sits at the cusp between good and bad. It exists as a wholly mediocre game, relying so much on its inspiration that it never feels unique. When compared to Sony's recent first-party successes in the form of Spider-Man and God of War, it only makes Days Gone that much blander".

According to Sony, the game managed to sell 8 million copies total, following its PC port, which led to somewhat of a small cult following, though the game remains at a middling 71 Metacritic score. Days Gone was never greenlit for a sequel, and Garvin left Sony to work for Crystal Dynamics, and is currently assisting in the development of an "NFT-themed game".

He deleted his Tweet and privated his account after gamers and reviewers criticized him for his comment, though the remark is archived, here.

I don't even want to play it - even if it's free, therefore I didn't pirate it. So in a way he was right, no one bothered to play his game. He was also right about woke reviewers too, but no one care about his game.

Like aren't most games not financial successes? Feels like he's just blaming a group instead understand that luck, often not a games quality plays a part in its success and that a lot of time games to fail will happen.

Bring on the wokeness. More often than not, so called "anti woke" people are against diversity.
The woke movement becomes as bad as extreme right and left wing movements. Although the ground principels are good (promote diversity) It also has become something politcial and the so called cancel-culture is a direct consequence of extreme woke. As is self censoring: Even stand-up comedians are afraid to say something considered to be out of line.

'If you are not with us, you are against us'.... and that is a fascist standpoint.
Just live together in peace and if something is said or done what you do not like. Say or do something you do like.

To be on topic: Days Gone is not that bad but I stopped playing it because much better games game along. This director should admit that this game was just not 'it'

He should know that "woke" is a four letter word. In days gone it may be ok to call somebody woke and he is behind time.

I think the game is good.

Dr Seuss got attacked is sad and cancelling him is crazy.

I wonder any Chinese angry about this or the anger are from white people who take pride for being angry.

Why did the new Saints Row with its rag tag group of zoomer brown queer protagonists fail?
It was essentially TikTok: The Game

Try telling that to Hollywood filmmakers who'll label you a term if you don't like their movie.

Well I for one liked this game alot and can't understand some of the critisism at least not at the point where I played the game.
Haven't noticed any bugs at least nothing serious and the game run very well also no idea about "bad AI" or whatever as it was good enough for me and Zombies aren't supposed to be like super intelligent anyways.

Only trouble I had was with some of the hordes beeing way to hard and no matter where you were they always found you instandly which for me was to much most of the time as I always run out of ammonition and other stuff to fight them beeing only able to clear like 2 or 3 hordes at all :(

Also I kinda did like to explore a little bit but my Problem was that it got really hard in the night so exploring to far away from any kind of shelter was often bad and your bike sucked up so much fuel that it was really hard using it but yeah thats minor stuff not taking the fun for me.

Yep, there it is. 'You didn't like my stuff because it OFFENDED you. It was too REAL and HARDCORE for your little candy-ass baby eyes.'

People do this now because you used to say 'you just didn't get it', but being able to paint it as a matter of being offended rather than not understanding is way easier to mock and deride for the butthurt creator. Now it's not just that you're dumb, you're also a weak sensitive little pansy.

I wanted to find some actual reviews of the game to see what they actually said about it and became aware that the game came out three years ago, time flies when you're having fun doesn't it.

Anyway, is there any serious review out there that took offence at the "looking at female butt" bit (he's being awfully specific there) or was it a random Tumblr post?
Most reviews called it slow, drawn out, generic, boring, with a pointlessly large, mostly empty open world padded out with copy-pasted blocks of dull terrain, and that every mechanic and plot device had already been done better by other games in the genre.
He may be right in saying that reviewers "couldn't be bothered to play the game" because a lot of them gave up only 40 hours in, and apparently the plot starts at 80 hours.

What people call "woke stuff", is not really something that we should qualify as woke. It should be the norm. We all love being represented in the videogames. He wrote a white gruff dude on a bike well, that will not connect with people who are not into that type of story.

Why did Stardew Valley sell 20 million copies? Because it is full of "woke stuff"? No because it is a great game with a great quality and that anyone can feel represented by it. People enjoy the fantasy of it. Being a farmer who can love anyone, do anything they feel like.

Also if woke "woke stuff" as they call it makes game sell better it might be time to include it in the games. It will benefit everyone. Both the players and the developers.

WIN WIN SON!
Representation is not what makes a game "woke".

Days gone? I played it (so did my wife) and thought it was pretty good and had a good story, so you can't claim no one played it. Lot's of people played it and liked it.

The fact you have a snowflake in charge talking shit to those that are key influencers in the gaming industry that potential customers will listen too, though that itself gamers shouldn't.

I mean, take breath of the wild, nintendo must have clearly given it to fans of thr franchise and nintendo because everyone was over hyping the shit out of that game, yet will find far better open world games get slated over things, yet they completely ignored everything wrong with BoTW.

I played the game and thought it was OK, but the only thing the game really had going for itself and what WOW'd gamers was the massive hoards of crazy zombies charging after you.

Unlike any other zombie game, we haven't really had anything like this before, with so many zombies coming at you, all on one screen.

Other than that, it didnt really have a strong story and the missions were pretty much bland, go to set points, talk to someone, do a mission and repeate.

I would have thought the game would have had a stronger story and focus on actual survival, finding food and materials to craft weapons.

But it was kinda stupid like the walking dead where the world has gone to shit, yet somehow weapons and ammunition is piss easy to find.

Ohh yea and then we mention the game breaking bugs, even the PC version was fucked up and multiple times you'd hit a black screen of death.

And the customer service was a joke, no one had a clue about gaming or fuck all.

So yea, the game is mediocre at its best, afterwards this prat has nailed the coffin shut for any hope of a sequel.

The game actually sold really well, and yet didn't get the go ahead for a sequel

Personally I really enjoyed the game, the earlier portions of the game definitely gave a bad impression, having read some of the reviews It did seem like a number of them didn't actually play very far into the game before reviewing it, as a lot of the criticisms applied to the beginning.

some elements like the bike seemingly only carrying a thimble of gas became a largely non-issue in the later half of the game

While I've many times seen reviewers seemingly review a game badly overall because of some small element they didn't personally like is something I've seen, not sure if that was really a factor this time

I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn if many of them gave up on the game early on, I doubt many of them would admit to that in their review.

I've long since given up on letting game reviews influence my buying decisions, too many times I've seen games reviewed poorly that I've found very enjoyable, while bigger publisher games getting good reviews no matter the content
