Use the Wii U as a Second Monitor with Moonlight + HDMI Dummy. Guide.

Hello people, I do this guide by opening a new topic because I am sure that if I write it in the Monlight section of @GaryOderNichts , this message will be lost among the many questions or problems of the users.

Since I literally love the @GaryOderNichts / Moonlight team app, I wanted to give you this little tip if you are interested like me in using the Wii U as a second screen Monitor and want to have your child or friend play while using the same computer to do other things on your Principal Monitor.

Having been fiddling with Moonlight and GeforceExperience for a long time, I noticed that Moonlight cannot manage streaming in a monitor as you wish to, because the Host (GeforceExperience) has always been the first main screen to stream as a priority and if you have 2 or more screens connected to your PC, you will encounter a series of problems inherent to the screen resolutions that will go to Stream, messing up with the Desktop and other problems that I am not here to explain so deeply.

And here, I came up with an idea, in my case to show the GamePAD and use it as a second Touch Screen for my PC; you have to buy a Dummy HDMI that supports multiple resolutions.
The Dummy HDMI that I bought in a shop in my area, emulates like if you had connected an external real monitor and supports any resolution up to 4k 4096 x 2160 60Hz (in full HD 1080p 120Hz).

How do you have to set:

1) Purchase an HDMI Dummy (as attached photos below).

2) Once the Dummy HDMI (as second screen) is connected, open the Display settings in Windows and set / assign the Dummy HDMI as the main screen and do not change the resolution (by default keep at 1080p (for now)).

3) Set the streaming in GeforceExperience setting to stream C: \ Windows \ System32 \ mstsc.exe (As per photo attached below).
And, of course, set manually the right parameters into the config file from moonlight app.

4) If you use the PAD as a secondary screen like me, open the Nvidia Control Panel, and set the Dummy HDMI to a Custom/ Personalized resolution of 854x480 at 60Hz (So the resolution must be set through the Nvidia app and not through Windows, as the picture below) .

5) Once you have set the correct resolution of the PAD you will have your Wii U / Windows Touch screen Monitor as the Second Monitor, and you can return to point 2 of this list, to uncheck the Wii U PAD as the main screen and assign it to your main Monitor (where you work) as primary in order not to incur problems of opening the new windows or softwares that go into the monitor of your Wii U.

6) In this way you can enjoy a mobile gaming at correct resolution on the GamePAD or even use your Wii U PAD for second monitor at 854x480 to open it without resolutions errors or crash of the Monnlight app as on the real monitor attached could manifest, and use your Wii U PAD to display other your personal stuffs o job.

I hope this guide it's useful and helps you out there.
Lastly sorry for the Language on setting pictures side, but it's understandable, cheers.

Seems like an interesting concept!

Could the WiiU pad be used for features found on the Elgato Stream Deck? Could be a cheap alternative to one if you have a WiiU lying around unused!

One question, where you say;
In this way you can enjoy a mobile gaming at correct resolution on the GamePAD
Can you connect the gamepad via bluetooth to use it's controls when you're emulating games or are you still limited to using a Keyboard & Mouse/ External controller?

The Wii U Gamepad uses 5G Wi-Fi to communicate with the Wii U, so while it TECHNICALLY is possible to connect the Gamepad to things other than the Wii U... it won't just work as simple as that, ESPECIALLY not on Windows or even OS X. Maybe the Moonlight devs could try to implement input forwarding or something? So that it could be like using a PS Vita to play your PS3/PS4 games over your local network?

Good idea, YES, if you have some softwares like Macro Deck (https://macrodeck.org/) or Touch Portal or any other software out there that allow you to have manage the icons , you can use the Wii U PAD as like an Elgato Stream Deck.

And about the gamepad via bluetooth, you no need to connect anything because the Wii U , once it's connected by Moonlight, with the latest updates of Moonlight (for Wii U) , the Pad it's already connected as an external bluetooth device and the Touch Screen works as Touch Screen Mouse....

So all your questions are postivie answers.....

Is there some way to use the Wii U Gamepad as a secondary touch monitor without a HDMI Dummy plug? Y'know, not just for the lulz and all that but also as a potential drawing tablet?
Yes, but the problem are the resolution unmatching with your Principal Monitor.... that, if you have some like 27 /32 inch Monitor you have to downgrade to your WII U PAD at 854x480p to be usefull, and when you play with resolution of the screen (except that your principal monitor 1080p or 2k or 4k you will see everything big and pixelated image) sometimes createts the stream errors or will unmatch the picture and the stream goes crazy.

Instead If you say, ok I keep the principal Monitor as it is and I will attach a second Monitor to assaign and stream on Wii U PAD you will face the same problems as the previous scenario plus you must to keep two monitors turn on + the Wii U PAD.

Also the Wii U PAD , yes you can drawing but it's nothing so professional (and I have one Microsoft Laptop Studio , so I know what I talking about ;) ). so if you need just to draw without anythingh so serious yes you can.

The HDMI Dummy will solve all those problems and you can decide even to turn off any Monitor to save the electricity and don't be bother of some monitor turn on in another room......

Fantastic information. This may be something that I look into in future in that case, appreciate the quick response and great work!

As for using it do draw, I do a lo tof work in Paint.NET for erasing backgrounds, so this could make that process so much faster by being able to control the eraser tool much more easily, correct?

Well, my main monitor is only 1366 X 768, but sadly that's STILL bigger than the gamepad's resolution.
Screw it, I'll just try it out and see what happens.

Well, for anyone else that was just here for the possibility of using your Gamepad like a drawing tablet of sorts for your PC: Don't give up just yet, because I've actually found out how you can do it!
Sorry to sidetrack, but I'd imagine that's why most people would wanna use Moonlight on their Wii U aside from maybe just having a bigger grippier Steam Deck, which is understandable.
However I feel like if I just posted it all here, it'd probably count as off-topic. Should I just make a new thread?

Yes, I have tested and the PAD can be used as amatorial simple " drawing " board (drawing for simple tasks, because the Pad it's not a really drawing board with different levels of pressures on it).

And yes I have tried a picture to modify and erase some material in with Photoshop and it works perfectly for such tasks.......

Hi, you need to change the configuration file into moonlight, to set the name of the app that you need to stream (the one custom that you already set into the GFE, otherwise by default will open you Steam app). So, go in the Moonlight section in this Forum, and check how to do it (if you don't know......).

After that, if you have some other problems I will try to help you...
