Yet another system update?

So, I'm confused because there's no info about this anywhere. My system is on 5.5.6 (U). Was using the browser, exited to home and saw the x on Downloads. It says there is a failed attempt at another system update?? It's DNS blocked so any new update will fail. I see nothing anywhere about a new system update.

Anyone else seeing this? Is there yet another update before the eshop closes?

Also, I advocate for a new prefix tag for [Updates] or something for system update alert, info, or help threads related to system update issues.

This does happen to me a lot on my 3DS, you update and it does it anyways regardless if there is any or not.

It's absolutely fine. Happened to me a while back and I got the fright of my life!

Wether you block updates or not the console still looks for them and this red X is just caught in the crossfire of nothing to see! No harm in it, doesn't break anything and will go away of its own accord.

As for the prefix tags... No point in a update tag for a dead console, there most likely won't be anymore now. Just search the forum, its why the search button exists!

Uh, it's not the red x and blocking updates I'm asking about, I know that's normal. It's that my system already has the supposed last update already, 5.5.6U, but shows a new system update that tried to download and failed. What new system update, there isn't one I know of.

This system update status bar only shows up when there's a system update, then stays there forever until it completes the download. Is there some stealth system update being pushed?

Edit: Also, wouldn't a new prefix tag be forum-wide, not just for the wii u?

It's not an update. The process thinks its checking for one and thinks its downloading some sort of meta data and then nothing else happens. You can either ignore it or freak out. :ha:

As for the tags, they can be used forum wide or specific but what if the author didn't use them as the post was created long before the site revamp? Do people not search with words related to their problems these days? The temp has a good engine for this but we digress!

Not only can they ignore it or freak out they could also pull out the power cord from the WiiU wait about 20 seconds and it will be gone.

Just pulling the plug gets rid of it? Will try.

I've used this system every day for 7 years, I've never seen this behavior. The only time I've ever seen it have the system update download status appear is when there  is an actual firmware update.

So why exactly did it appear now, anyway?

Also, I  did search... after browsing the first few pages to see if a new update was already reported. One would assume it was recent enough to see one of those threads right there on page 1 or 2 asking the usual questions. When I didn't find any, it was around midnight, so I figured I might be the first to report it, but Google and Nintendo turned up nothing, either. I don't see anyone else talking about this particular situation either, a system update when there is none.

That's why I'm asking what's up with this, why did it think there is an update, and also try to download it? It shouldn't have a system update download status when there's nothing to download. I'd just like to learn why it happened.

I just started using the browser for viewing youtube videos and a couple other sites I need to check, never really used the browser till now, I don't know if that's related. Or, maybe related to eshop and being december?

EDIT: Unplugging for 20 (or more) seconds did not make it "gone."

Hmm strange that has always been the advice given in the past by people on the site and has always worked for me. Maybe it was a minute it's been years since I have had to do it.

Anyhoo have you removed any system titles/files?

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
