You can get brand new 2ds or 2dsxl more easily than both old and new 3ds, so I'll recommend you buy one of these. 2ds is super comfy for Etrian Odyssey and if you want to spend over 1k hours on this series its probably will be the best choice.

If the OP doesn't already have dozens of games sitting around that they haven't ever played, it's not at all difficult to arrive in that situation without spending much money. The Epic Store giveaways alone are enough to establish an unhealthy backlog.

They are easier to get hold of, but to throw in a counterpoint to the 2DSXL, its build quality is downright shoddy compared to the 3DSes. 2DSXL uses much thinner and flimsier plastic and I personally couldn't stand the feel of it compared to the old and New 3DS.

But if OP just wants the system for as cheap as possible, yeah, good call.

The New 3DS is honestly just better overall than the New 2DS XL, better quality overall, you just need a big microSD card

Agreed. I've got the regular-sized New 3DS and it's perfect for me, not as big as the XL but just comfortably bigger than the OG.

Build quality of 2ds xl is superior compared to both new 3ds. You don't even need remove backplate to swap cards and everything feels extremely sturdy. I have both old and new 3ds/2ds consoles and 3ds xl and new 3ds xl had some problems with backplate and it's fragility after playing alot in MH.
My fav console to handle/play is either normal new 3ds or 2ds xl.

I love the O3ds because it is something portable consoles should always strive to be... it's actually (very) portable, you carry it your pants' pockets without problems. I have four of these already and still want to find the red one someday, it's my favorite console ever, without a doubt.

Come on, that’s demonstrably not true. The whole reason the 2DSXL is more affordable is because it skimps on build quality compared to the 3DS models. Personal preference for the design is fine, can’t argue with that, but the 2DSXL is built to be cheaper. I remember when it released and people kept asking why the backlights to the screen were bleeding through the plastic. Fine it might be but sturdy it ain’t.

I would argue that there are 3 must-have Nintendo systems with all others being playable within the 3 systems (either officially or through modding) that I'm talking about. These systems are: The Switch, The Wii U, and the 3DS (I'd opt for a New 3DS, but an original will suffice for most needs all the same). I suppose an argument could be made that none of those systems will let you truly appreciate Virtual Boy games, though they can be emulated without the 3D effect on those systems, so its not like those game are out of reach, but I could understand the argument for Virtual Boy of all systems being the 4th must-have Nintendo system if the goal is to appreciate the vast majority of all Nintendo video games ever released.

So, that's my long winded way of saying, yes, get a 3DS if you haven't already.

I dunno, I have both a N3DSXL and a Special Edition Pokeball N2DSXL, and I would argue that the N2DSXL has the better build quality. Now granted I do have a late-life special edition N2DSXL that is physically designed different than all other N2DSXLs, so perhaps they put a little extra love in such special editions (likewise I would assume for that Hylian Shield special N2DSXL that was also physically different). But aside from the lack of the stereoscopic 3D, I do ultimately prefer the build quality of my N2DSXL to that of my N3DSXL.

Of course, if you don't wanna spend a lot of money, get the New 2DS XL, but the build quality kinda sucks and the top screen is really easy to break, so if you wanna spend some more get the New 3DS XL. It does however have chipping paint if you drop it, but you can just get a case for 6 bucks, the build quality is pretty surpeme compared to the 2DS XL

I'm saying that if someone says they are barely above broke, spending a couple hundred on a gaming system is probably not the best idea to begin with and it may be better to set that $$$ aside for food, gas, rent, other bills, etc. I'm not sure what a backlog of games has to do with it.

I absolutely agree. What I'm saying is that if one is barely above broke and wants to play video games, then one may consider numerous options before making an investment of a couple hundred.

well not necessary, buying a used 2ds for lets say, 50$... you now have 100s of hours of gaming, some of the best and diverse games with 3ds/ds (+emulations). Meaning That can be your Entertainment budget for a long while, Or course that does not work if your a person that Gets distracted easily or a person that needs the Newest and lastest.

I wholeheartedly agree with that and even though I sold most gaming stuff I used to own, I kept a few because it helps in terms of mental health and enjoying what you're playing.

For sure. I plan on using my PS2, PS3, 360, and Wii again. That's a whole lot of gaming!

PS2 and Wii will be using their official component cables (the shitty $5 ones are just barely serviceable).

true but you can also try to get a 2ds xl or crappy condition 3ds.. the point is getting the cheapest 2ds/3ds unit you can find to save cash
