Yes - so long as the mlc.bin is from your own system from a previous backup you've taken.

Also, if you do attempt to restore it, make sure that the mlc.bin backup matches your current system verion.

Here's what I mean ..

Let's say you have a backup from a year ago and at the time of the backup you were on System version 5.5.5
Now let's say you've updated your system recently to version 5.5.6 ... If you try to restore mlc.bin from system version 5.5.5 you will soft brick your system (on launch, you will get "Error code 160-0103" ).. the reason why this happens is because your SLC.bin file is on 5.5.6 but your mlc.bin would be on 5.5.5 after the restore ...

This is why it's important that people take fresh/new backups of mlc.bin & slc.bin after a new system update.

Hopefully what I said above makes sense ..

Thanks a lot! So these ones should be fine, right? :)
Yeah, gladly my backups are from the same update

Yes , that looks fine.. You will need to join them into a single bin file before you can use Win32 Disk Imager
To do this, open command prompt and navigate to the directory where you have your multi-part mlc backup and execute the following

copy /b mlc.bin.part01 + mlc.bin.part02 + mlc.bin.part03 + mlc.bin.part04 + mlc.bin.part05 + mlc.bin.part06 + mlc.bin.part07 + mlc.bin.part08 + mlc.bin.part09 + mlc.bin.part10 + mlc.bin.part11 + mlc.bin.part12 + mlc.bin.part13 + mlc.bin.part14 + mlc.bin.part15 mlc.bin

This will join your 15 files (if your WiiU is the 32gb version) .. The final output file should be exactly 31,268,536,320 bytes

You can then use this single file directly with Win32 Disk Imager

Great, thanks! My Wii U is 8 GB, so there are only 4 parts to merge
And the last question, is this MLC NAND chip? Wanna make sure which one to connect to :)

UPDATE: It is now possible to fully UNBRICK the WiiU using a hardmod, teensy and WiiU Nand Tools.
I have tried a new approach to dumping the Emmc nand and it has worked. With this method I was able to dump the nand to an img file on the PC and then successfully write the img file back to the WiiU.

The trick was to disconnect the CLK signal to the nand on the motherboard and then the pc was able to read the nand. After you have dumped / wrote your nand.img make sure to reconnect the CKL with a jumper.

Dumping the nand was the same procedure as with the 3DS hardmod using Win32DiskImager.

First connect the SD card to your card reader on your PC.
Press the power button on the WiiU.
A popup message should appear on the PC saying you need to format the drive. CLICK CANCEL. DO NOT FORMAT THE DRIVE!!!! remember what drive letter it says.
View attachment 74918
Open Win32DiskImager and make sure the Drive letter on the right is the same as the one that popped up!
Select where you want to save the .img file and click read.
View attachment 74921
The dump size was 29.7gb and took around 2 hours at 5.7MB/sec

If when you click read and it says "Lock Error" keep trying. it could do it on the first attemp or the third or the twentieth. This was exactly the same with the 3DS. To try and eliminate this problem make sure there are no explorer windows open or anything else that might be trying to read the drive.
View attachment 74920

When the read is complete close Win32DiskImager and safely eject the drive using "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media"
Hold the power button on the WiiU to turn off the console and don't forget to insert the jumper so that the wiiU can boot normally again.

PLEASE NOTE this is not a proper step by step tutorial (yet). I'm ony posting my findings and what I did to successfully read and write the nand.

If someone wants to write up a more detailed tutorial later please feel free (just give me a mention :)

I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY BRICKS. ONLY ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!!

Even though this by itself cannot UNbrick a bricked system. Its a start.

The next thing to try is the TSOP NAND and then anyone with a backup of BOTH the eMMC and TSOP nands should be able to fully UNbrick their WiiU if anything goes wrong..

UPDATE:
Not all Card Readers will work. Here is a list of confirmed Working & non Working Readers:
Transcend TS-RDP8K - WORKED
ALL IN 1 HDD Docking Station Model:875 - WORKED
Logilink Cr0001b - Confirmed WORKING. Thanks @Tommy084
Anker USB 3.0 AR200 - DID NOT WORK (would not detect drive?)
Kingwin 5.25 inch bay mounted fan controller/multi card reader - NOT WORKING. Thanks @DocAmes1980

UPDATE 2:
I've been playing around with this some more and if you also connect the other 3 DAT lines the read rate goes up to 18.4MB/sec (write rate 10MB/sec) so a full 32GB nand can now be dumped in around 30 minutes instead of 2 hours!
View attachment 75523 View attachment 75524

UPDATE 3:
Here is a video of it working.

UPDATE 4:
I can confirm that the mlc backup made with dimoks' sdio_nand_manager works with the hardmod.
I created a new rednand, dumped the nand images with sdio_nand_manager then straight away made a mlc dump with the hardmod and the SHA256 hashes form both mlc dumps match.

UPDATE 5:
Thanks to @DocAmes1980 & @Tommy084 for trying it out and confirming the mod works.

There are eMMC and TSOP on a Wii-U motherboard?

LOL, other than obfuscation, I cannot think of any logical reason as why they did that.

Yes

Tip: I found it a lot easier to first prep your SD card (ie.. solder the wires to your SD card , as you may screw up your first one like I did ) ,, once you've prepped your SD card, then move onto soldering it to your motherboard. Try to keep the overall length of the wires under 30 cm otherwise you may face SD card drop out connection issues.

Also, try to use an older USB 2.0 card reader.. I went through several different USB 3.0 readers and none of them could detect the chip, or for the 2 that did the connection was extremely unstable. All of my USB 2.0 readers had no trouble reading the card.

Sorry for maybe stupid questions, so Teensy is not needed here? Only jumper and sd card with the reader? Like in original post without updates. If not, then I'll be ready to do this hardmod :)

Correct!

Teensy is only needed for dumping/restoring slc.bin & slccmpt.bin

To dump/restore mlc.bin , you only need the SD card hardmod noted in this forum.

Recently, my Aroma/Tiramisu softmodded Wii U crashed while copying Xenoblade Chronicles X datafiles from HDD to the internal memory. From now on, my Wii U doesn't boot anymore, the TV stays black and the Gamepad can't connect to the console. But luckily, I have the NAND dumps from the softmod!

However, what exactly happened to my console and which method do I have to perform in my case to resurrect my Wii U? What part could be affected, the mlc.bin or the slc/slccmpt.bin?

So will the SD card hardmod help me or do I need to perfom the Teensy way?

The Teensy hardmod (for slc.bin) is usually for situations where you are getting error 160-0101 as a result of boot title ID issue (usually from CBHC followed by a format ), however there's a much simpler method using a Pico can be done to correct this instead of the teensy method.

The SD card hardmod, is usually done to resolve issues where you're getting error 160-0103 ( mlc.bin) , software corruption issue etc..

However I have not seen anyone on these forums use any of the 2 methods above to resolve an issue where the Console does not display anything. What you're describing feels a lot more like some sort of hardware issue is happening. Trying to use either of the 2 methods above may actually make things worse ..

You may want to try a few things like
1. Unplug any USB peripheral from the console and just plug in Power and HDMI cable.
2. When you power on the console, does the blue light on the Wiiu stay on, or does it turn off or does it blink at all (maybe a blinking red light? )
3. Can you see if the Fan at the back of the console is spinning when you turn on the console ( I highly doubt this is the issue as the console can usually boot up for a few minutes without any fan movement , but worth a try )
4. Do you have a friend that can lend you their Power Bar for the Wiiu and maybe try that to rule out a power issue.

Thank you very much so far for your help :)

1. Yes i tried that
2. Blue LED stays blue
3. Fan is spinning
4. I have a second adapter but same result

I still think this is a software issue. Of course, there's always the possibility of a hardware fault but since the crash occured during the copy of the game data files, I assume there's now something fishy with the system files preventing the console to boot.

Next steps I'll try:
  • nandBinCheck
  • nandFixer
  • nandCbhcRemover
Any more ideas for troubleshooting?

Depends. Try another hdmi cable. Are the output ports okay and not damaged? No video output has nothing to do with this here. This thread is for a hardmod for the emmc to unbrick the wii u. Your issue is something else i would say.

If I write my SLC dump to another Wii U console, are my eShop purchases transferred as well?

At the moment , it is not possible to take an SLC or MLC dump from one WiiU and write it to another WiiU. Each of these dumps are encrypted with an unique key that is tied to the WiiU hardware.

.. also side note, this thread is for dumping/restoring the mlc.bin file using the SD card hardmod. If you have intentions of writing the slc you won't be able to use the SD card hard mod. SLC hardmod can be found here (link)

I'm currenty dumping a 32GB Wii U NAND via Hardmod with my Anker USB 3.0 AR200 and it's working fine.
I used it back in the Days to dump the NAND of 3DS Consoles.
The Read Speed via 4 Wire connection is not that great, it's only ~1.3 MB/s
