eBay kinda does something similar. when I received my superslim ps3, which seemed to have a defect (found out later that it was related to sony actually), they put me on a list for trying to return the item. however, the guy said I could keep the system, and he would refund my money, which he did. anyway, I'm no longer on this list, and it would remind me of this every time I tried to return something for about a year or so. I have no idea how that even happened, but it made me angry.
Businesses tend to take action when they feel people are abusing their services. Sucks eBay did that to you when there are plenty of real scammers on there.

My account also got banned from posting reviews too. I don't know why, I haven't violated any guidelines.
There's a lot of questionable reviews so who knows.

I particularly don't trust Vine reviewers as those can be biased and they're invited so there's an incentive for them to do a good review.

Yes, you do get some fake reviews on Amazon, as well as people trolling. I rarely even review anything there, but Amazon decided for no apparent reason to ban me from doing so, claiming that I violated reviewing guidelines.

The last thing i've had to return was my iPhone XS when I bought it a year ago. I would've been okay with the gigantic laundry list of problems and things that annoyed me when I switched from my cheap Android phone to an iPhone, but on complete random chance the earpiece speaker that you need for phone calls broke due to some sort of manufacturing defect. They accepted the return and I decided to not even bother with getting a new phone.

I was annoyed for a bit, but in hindsight I'm really happy that I moved on. That return was my ticket out, the crackle of the dead speaker was like a warning shot beseeching me to turn around, to keep using my shitty android phone and to never look back.

I've gien up trying to return things Decades ago. They always kept say "Oh we can't accept that. It's been open, or you used it [when clearly I haven't] Thus when I get the product, and don't like it afterwards, I say oh well. [actually I say harsher words than that]
I used to work for a big electronics retailer and trying to do this on behalf of customers was a nightmare with certain companies. Samsung are dreadful for it. One person unpacked a new fridge freezer that looked like it had been squeezed in a giant vice and the box was spotless, but 'because they'd accepted the delivery into their home there was nothing they could do' :wtf: everyone just wants to protect the bottom line. Anyway.

To answer the OP, I don't often return stuff. I generally accept that things aren't perfect in life and if it's something I can ignore, I make do. I just won't accept a poorly-made meal or something that's outright broken.

I haven't had that happen in decades. Walmart, Target, Amazon, etc. all have very good return policies. Sometimes I'm not even asked for a receipt. Things must have changed after you quit trying. :P Half the time Amazon says I don't even have to return the item and they'll just ship out a new one. Even for cat food that my cat wouldn't touch. Chewy gave me a 100% refund and told me to just give the food to a local animal shelter.

A panini press.

It was a pretty nice panini press, ceramic non-stick plates, made a great crunchy crust... but could only work 3 minutes at a time before burning up.

The Brave Little Toaster it ain't.

Even the manual says it's only suitable for one (1) sandwich at a go.
Which wasn't exactly emphasized in the promo materials, let me tell you.
And it doesn't just trigger the overheat switch, it doesn't turn back on once it's cooled down (like hair dryers do), there's a component in there that burns out.
I took it in for repairs twice, then returned for good.
Like, seriously? A toaster that is sensitive to heat?

Well as they say, if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen, get in the oRIgiNaL pAcKAgiNG and get back to the store.
And get bent too.

Not the most interesting or the most expensive item, but pretty bizarre.

I once had an error screen saying I couldn't post reviews, so I sent them an email and it was fixed. I don't even post that much or try to mislead people to buying an item, just my experience.

I return something every week. I like to buy and use it. When I'm done I return. Very useful for tools you don't want to buy.
Sounds more like renting.

The most memorable thing I've ever returned was a 2015 MacBook Pro. It was a full-spec model but it was also an Amazon refurbished, which I didn't think much of at the time. It turns out Amazon is terrible with their refurbishing program and set one out with an issue with the fans, so it would run the fans at full blast and the entire MacBook would lag. I ended up returning it and getting a 2017 mid-range from Apple instead.

same thing happened to me with ebay and a super slim ps3. something appeared to be wrong on the shop, which I later found out was due to an issue with sony's servers rather than the system. the guy refunded my money and told me to keep it. it's so damn quiet, even after three hours.

That would’ve been great to try and fix. I mean, it’s already broken. Why not try. :)

Surely their refurbishing service could let be as bad as GameStop. Xenon, anyone?

My parents got me a drone for christmas one year, and I lived in an apartment complex at the time. There were so many Wi-Fi in my complex overlapping and interfering with one-another that I had to just return the drone and got a graphics card instead.

My most recent return was a couple of months ago. There was a 1TB microSD card for like $20 on Amazon. It was some weird brand and I knew it was probably too good to be true, so as soon as it came, I ran some of those test utilities on it and sure enough it was fake. Bad fake, too, as after one of the tests it quit working all together, and wouldn't even allow formatting any more. So I returned it and bought a $40-50 or so 512GB Microcenter brand card. It's not my preferred brand, but I've never actually had problems with them, and it's worked fine (tested fine before using it, too).

I returned the @JuanBaNaNa suck-'o'-matic 1000. it was just too weak for what I needed. I need the 5000, I think.

Also @godreborn returned @JuanBaNaNa back to Mexico

Was going to fix a switch lite, end up returning it as right analog stick plastic was broken, shoulder button doesn't work, scratches on the screen, and some screws were stripped so it is beyond repair.

I generally only return things if they don't work properly for me, for whatever reason. I returned some RAM to Amazon, because I couldn't get it stable at the rated 3600mhz, but then I bought another kit and had the same issue. So my Ryzen 3700x' Infinity Fabric appears to be a potato. Kept the RAM anyway, since I needed the increased capacity.
I returned another Amazon order because they sent me the wrong product.
I returned a Raspberry Pi once because the Pi 2 was announced like 2 days after I got it. Bad timing there.
I returned a Pokemon Gotcha years ago because it wouldn't work with my phone. Just wouldn't stay connected.
I returned a Ryzen 5800x last year because it was getting too hot, and instead of throttling like it should, it overheated and caused BSoDs. Probably a result of my underpowered cooler but it's not like I have any better options in a SFF case. Still, the throttling behavior (or lack thereof) seemed odd.
And the last tech thing that comes to mind that I've returned was a thin client ages ago. It was on sale for like 80% off as an open box return, I figured, I can't pass that up, it'll be perfect to allow me to use my desktop from 2 places in the house. It didn't really work out that well though, it was too laggy to be used for much beyond chatting and light web browsing. Videos and gaming were out of the question. So I returned it, and I was obviously not the first to do so, but I expect I was not even the second, it was probably marked down that much because it had been returned numerous times. Probably for the same reason.
