Prototype of "Segapede", cancelled Sega Genesis game set in Sonic's universe, dumped and preserved

Segapede_title.png

Back in 1993, the Sega Technical Institute worked on a game being developed for the Sega console of the time, the Genesis (or Mega Drive as known in some countries of the world). The game was initially titled "Segapede", though it was later reworked into the name of "Astropede".

The game was set to take place in the same universe as the Sonic franchise, featuring a badnik created by Dr. Robotnik named "Zipp", in an adventure to collect and cleanup something called "Chaos Dust" that infected an evil doctor (most likely Robotnik/Eggman himself). The gameplay was going to be similar to Sonic's, featuring momentum-based mechanics, but with the twist that Zipp would be able to gain abilities (like power-ups), that would change its back segment depending on the power up, like Defensive Spikes, Turbo Charger, Pulse Cannon, and many others.

Craig Stitt, an artist involved in the development of Sonic 2, pitched the idea for the game to Sega, with an initial proposal made in September of 1993, and after making a first playable version of the game (and dropping the Sonic connection), it was greenlit for production in November of 1993, this time under the name of Astropede. However, the game would be cancelled in 1994, due to the sheer amount of games that the Sega Technical Institute (STI) was working at during that time span.

The prototype features some familiar artwork, reusing assets from the dropped Sonic 2 level, Hidden Palace Zone (which Craig Stitt worked on), for the playable demo that was pitched. And thanks to Craig Stitt himself, the game's prototype was shared, dumped and preserved!
Here's some notes that Hidden Palace gives about the prototype ROM:
  • Original concept was pitched on September 21, 1993 to Sega sometime after work on Sonic Spinball had finished. The project was revised and approved for "first playable" status in November 22, 1993.
  • Game was eventually cancelled sometime after mid 1994 due to the need of having staff on other projects.
  • Game ROM is from 1994, possibly just before the game was cancelled.
  • Game consists of 1 level with music and sound done by Howard Drossin.
  • Game's first level uses level art from Hidden Palace Zone, a cut level from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Mega Drive.
  • Pressing start resets the game.
The prototype is currently preserved and available over at the Hidden Palace website for everyone to experience.

who cares what it's called. I could only assume that the name was changed, because something else was called Mega Drive over here, but who knows?
Thats the exact reason there was an American company called Megadrive and they blocked Sega of America using the name. What was also a factor was the head of Sega Of America hated the name Megadrive.

What makes no sense is calling it the Genesis. Which as we know means first/start/original. Its as crazy as Microsoft calling their thrid console the Xbox One

it was the bit wars at that time. I saw the avgn episode where he's reviewing a system that was the first 64 bit system, think it was the jaguar. the games were so terrible that he said, "what happened to other 32 bits!"

Thing is Atari lied about the Jaguar as it was technically a 32 bit console. It had two 32 bit processors and they just added the two 32s together to claim it was 64bit lol.

Still not as dumb as the PS2 and Dreamcast advertising "128 bit" capabilities

It's called Genesis in all America, including Brazil, Argentina, Chile and all those countries that nobody seems to care much about.
You sure 'bout Brazil? Brazilians call it Mega Drive, TecToy called it Mega Drive, and Mega Drive sounds better with a Brazilian Portuguese and Portuguese accent.

Now, I don't know about those other countries from the Latin/South America as I'm not interested.

By the way, Brazil and Mexico made effin awesome dubs of the Dragon Ball series (DB/DBZ/DBGT). It's totally unrelated, but an amazing accomplishment.
Post automatically merged:

According to some sources mega drive was already copyrighted, according to other sources the American marketing team didn't like the name mega drive
Wasn't it because Genesis sounded "cooler" also?

The SNES was redesigned for America and Canada, while the rest got the original design. I forget the reason...

Oh, I remember! Kids couldn't place their drinks on top of it, apparently, but the SNES wasn't flat like the NES.

For a start you are totally wrong about Brazil

And Argentina

This is the one made in Argentina that has been sold for decades:
http://www.museo8bits.com/gen3_03.jpg. Now it only switched branding to look even more generic.

You're sourcing a magazine with TecToy-branded consoles sold in Buenos Aires. I'm wondering how many people even bought them.

You're right that TecToy consoles were called Mega Drive in Brazil though. I remember seeing Genesis clones from them here, but this is clones island, so I'm sure most things haven't been documented.

just saying, the Genesis sold more units in the US than all of the Mega Drive regions combined, so "Genesis" is technically the more popular title. That said, "Mega Drive" sounds cooler somehow. More badass. I'm from the US but I call it Mega Drive half of the time.

Wasn't it because Genesis sounded "cooler" also?

What's his name... the top Sega of America guy at the time... said that "Genesis" was in popular use around that time in sci-fi and they wanted to give it that association. I'm guessing it was similar to how everything had "Turbo" in the title in the 80s and "2000" in the late-90s.

So at the time a company Mega Drive Systems Inc held the name.

Why did they not call it the Sega Drive - too obvious or dumb.

Works for me.

Rather strange statement concidering its called the Megadrive in 99% of the world and only called the Genesis in North America.
I've only ever heard the system called the Sega Genesis during my whole childhood and teenage years. It was only when the internet came around that I heard "Megadrive", and that's just a dumb name by comparison. The system didn't even have a proper "drive" to speak of, until the Sega CD came around.

The NES and SNES were called "Entertainment System" and as far as entertainment system goes for them, they only played 8bit and 16bit games.

Console names don't need to make sense. If you want names that make absolutely no sense look at Xbox.

First: Xbox
Second: Xbox 360
Third: Xbox One
Fourth: Xbox Series (S or X)

The first name Sega considered for its console was the MK-1601, but it ultimately decided to call it the "Mega Drive". The name was said to represent superiority and speed, with the powerful Motorola 68000 processor in mind

The US/NA version of MD/Genesis outsold EUR more than 2:1.

The majority of people who have this console have the Genesis branded one, so I don't know where this 99% figure you have is coming from.

They're going by country numbers in which it was named like that I guess, but still, more people knew it as Genesis due to consoles sold compared to "Mega Drive".

Sigh. Dreamcast could've been if they hadn't killed it. :(
Well I mean I think dreamcast was a very good system. It was basically sega's best "arcade machine at home" Almost like Neo Geo was trying to do. But honestly I think sega's focus too much on "Let's bring the arcade home" tactic didn't last long. Nintendo & Sony consoles could do that with lots of compromises due to system limitations, but they also had other games that was made for playing at home like RPG and just games that didn't last about 30-60 minutes. (Almost like arcade games)

Dreamcast made it easy to port arcade games to the console since they basically ran identical hardware Naomi whatever they called it. Just needed to modify the software a bit to get it working. It's basically what the sega genesis was at the time. But just look at the games on dreamcast, capcom fighting games, SNK fighting games, Space shooter games. Probably the most promising games like Castlevania and some other cancelled games was just too late, and games like skies of arcadia shenmue & Phantasy star was also late near consoles end life.

Genesis just adapted better and also attracted more attention for more developers to making games for. All sorts of games exist for it and not just one kind of game overwhelmingly like saturn and dreamcast. I would say that it's a problem if most people who owned the console, mention their favorite games on it are either mostly developed by the same company or similar genres. A similar observation is the Turbo Graphix 16 being best known for shooting games or something. Also adding to that is the turbo controller for making them easier to play. :P
