Super Mario Bros. 3+ romhack brings Luigi, Toad and Peach with unique mechanics ala SMB2 into SMB3

Romhacker Infidelity, known for several impressive technical hacks in the past, like Super Mario All-Stars for the NES, which combines all of the classic NES titles into one ROM, similar to what All-Stars did on the SNES, has released a beta for his newest hack, Super Mario Bros. 3+.

The hack features a lot of new mechanics and QoL features into the original Super Mario Bros. 3 for the NES. One of the most impressive technical feats that this hack offers is the ability to play as either Mario, Luigi, Toad or Peach (Princess Toadstool), similar to what Super Mario Bros. 2 did back in the day. The list of new features goes as follows:
  • Mario is the overall balanced character, with the same stats as in the original SMB3.
  • Luigi can jump higher than anyone else.
  • Toad (with mushroom) can kick objects with the B button.
  • Princess Toadstool (small, big, fire, raccoon) has the ability to float/hover.
  • SRAM saving to keep your progress.
Player can save their progress at the overworld as well (which is the recommended method at the moment to avoid possible crashes)
  • Players can now wall-jump, similar to how it's done in recent Mario games.
  • Players can now ground pound, similar to recent Mario games.
  • Smash through bricks and enemies with the Hammer Suit while in your shell.
Hold Down+B to charge your P meter. When P meter is full, release the B button but keep holding the Down button down. You can even jump while spinning by holding Down.
  • Re-enter cleared #-# stages, and mini castles.
Cleared #-# stages will be white, indicating you can reenter it. Mini castles will have a flag in the front, showing you can reenter it.
  • The romhack works in real-hardware, be it through a reproduction cart (using an MMC3 chip / clone as base) or through a flashcart (tested with PowerPak and Everdrive N8 Pro).
  • And many more features.
As mentioned, the romhack has been released as a beta currently, but once some of the bugs are ironed out, it will be released in a stable manner, and it will be uploaded to Romhacking.net once that happens.

If you are interested in trying out the romhack, you can download the patch for it through Infidelity's Twitter post about the beta release.

UPDATE: The game's beta release has been updated to v1.1:

lol it's not like Romhacking.net made the romhack in question, taking out your anger at that site for hosting such a romhack would be like protesting Youtube for the existence of Logan Paul.

Or to more accurately equate it to your situation, taking out your anger on this romhack for the existence of the site that hosts it, would be like hating (insert your most beloved Youtube creator here) just for the existence of the platform Youtube itself.
Most hacks (including Super Mario Land 2 DX, unfortunately) are available for download there, and this makes me extremely mad.

There's nothing wrong with the site at all, been using the site for so many years without any problems.

Epic stuff!
I'm currently totally addicted to Mario rom hacks once again anyway. Patched myself a big amount of SMB1, SMB3 and SMW rom hacks recently to enjoy on the Miyoo Mini until my Analogue Pocket arrives where I'll enjoy them even more. Currently I'm playing Super Luigi Land, a lovely and well done SMW hack.
I'm especially hyped for anything that introduces new mechanics.
However I'll wait until SMB3+ leaves beta. Got enough to play until then so I'm fine. But still thanks for the exciting news!

They can't touch it, its a patch for the rom. Nothing illegal here till YOU put it to the rom....
They can't, as long as patches don't contain copyrighted materials.
I don't remember if Luigi/Toad/Peach appeared in Mario3.
Unless he found the sprites inside the ROM and re-use them as references in his hack, the patch contains sprites of Nintendo's Characters which weren't in the game. The hacker doesn't have the right to include sprites of IP characters in his patch (or anything that he didn't create himself).
I'm not saying they will DMCA, just pointing at what they could use to do it.

Oh, and yeah, Putting "original Nintendo" seal on a hack ads... it's asking for trouble.

Afik no other character sprites are in this game in this fashion (except 2p Luigi which was just a Mario pallette swap) or were even planned but the same can be said of any patch for any game on any console but the site in question has pleeeeenty of other patches, hacks, mods with similar names and have been around for years.

I don't get why DMCA always becomes the topic in these posts.... If it was so true why has it not been taken down yet? The site in question is stil here and all the other patches perfectly named with original source content and an added word or two.

I do get your point and can't disagree but I'm willing to bet it wont be going anywhere soon. The patch or site.

The focus of these threads always turn from 'wow a cool hack' to dmca ninja takedown watch and who said it first. All a bit boring man.... Just play the fucking game!!

But they're also available on other websites too. And again Romhacking itself didn't even make the mod, I feel like you're misplacing your hate for that website when you protest individual mods.

I mean most of the hacks only get available for download there, unless they are translations of modern console games (e.g. PoPoLoCrois Monogatari, which can be downloaded via a link on the page). Or in the case of AGT Team, they put the MEGA backup as an alternative (which I always choose).

But even then, RHDN just continues to piss me off.

Yup, and most of those same mods are still available on other websites as well. Yeah they end up on romhacking.net, but they tend to also get hosted elsewhere on the net, sometimes on their own dedicated websites, while still having Romhacking host a copy as well. Just seems so stupid to protest a mod that's only hosted on Romhacking, as if the people that banned you from Romhacking had anything to do with the creation of the mod in question. You're misplacing your anger at that website is the point here.

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.

Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though

@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.

Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
