    @Sicklyboy, and well I have a USB that I mostly use to transfer PS3 games so maybe I could use that
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
    Steamos is about to be awesome for driver support but it's limited with Debian specific stuff for different archs
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
    @Xdqwerty, true, I suppose that is a different concern. Depends on if you think you could explain your way out of it (lie), explain that it doesn't change anything on the computer and is only a program that runs from the USB drive (sort of lie). Not that lying is a good idea lol. Also, depends on if you think others would notice it is different. Using KDE Plasma desktop environment (default in Debian) looks not too different from WIndows 10. The file explorer looks very different, but if you're just using other programs like web browsers, it looks similar

    any list of OS is reduced to one Windows as soon as you want to do something serious
  • lapot2 @ lapot2:
    for development and repair of electronics most of the tools are only for Windows
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
    Yeah os won't really give a huge boost in performance if that's what you're specifically after
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
    What it looks like in KDE Plasma when I'm using firefox:

  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
    @Sicklyboy, all those Amazon links are storage aren't they
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
    Close enough to Windows that my parents wouldn't notice, for example (although my parents are probably a little older than yours, I would imagine)
  • lapot2 @ lapot2:
    Plus, in Windows you just ran the installer and it was installed.
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
    @K3Nv3,
    noctua fans

  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
    Close enough
  • lapot2 @ lapot2:
    in Linux you first look for software for your version of the OS, then you look for how to install this software, then you look for how to install all the dependencies, and after 4 hours of compilation and installation it turns out that one of the smallest dependencies is not supported by your version of the OS and the program cannot be installed
  • lapot2 @ lapot2:
    And you get an uninstalled program and 146 GB of hard drive space filled with God knows what and where. :rofl2:
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
    Just gotta follow. Guides in most cases and you're golden in linux
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    @K3Nv3, I mostly want a performance boost
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
    Linux is just awesome for a free open source alternative
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    @lapot2, yeah something that Windows is better than Linux is that you don't have to compile every single software you download
    +2
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
    @Xdqwerty, you'll have your own system someday I didn't even know what a performance boost was when I was your age
  • Kirbydogs @ Kirbydogs:
    I don't believe that is the case
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    @K3Nv3, well I can tell my PC can be somewhat slow
    +1
  • Kirbydogs @ Kirbydogs:
    You just use the terminal to download things, I don't think you have to compile every download
  • lapot2 @ lapot2:
    @K3Nv3,
    If you just need to surf the Internet, then maybe so. But if you need to do some serious work, there are often no open or closed tools for Linux at all.
  • K3Nv3 @ K3Nv3:
    Yeah Linux has its own store with most apps you need
