    From your description I immediately thought Wizards & Warriors. It also starts out the same way as Ghosts n' Goblins by showing a map. There were two sequels as well, and since you're thinking the game looks cheap perhaps you're remembering one of those.

    GBAtemp.net was started in mid to late 2002. It wasn't even a forum. It was just a place to download the latest rom releases. #GBAtemp was started when it was decided to take the roms off of the site.

    That's probably just the year that Yu-Gi-Oh! was created. I lot of times you'll see the date the game was made then the date the franchise was created. Sometimes they just put one or the other.
