Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

At the republican news portal Townhall.com, the self-proclaimed columnist Kevin McCullough warns us of the swamp of depraved filth and assorted sin worse than Sodom and Gommorrah, the so called Mass Effect, which, according to his text, should more precisely be called "Mass Erect". (Joke shamelessly stolen from Zero Punctuation).

QUOTE said:
It's called "Mass Effect" and it allows its players - universally male no doubt - to engage in the most realistic sex acts ever conceived. One can custom design the shape, form, bodies, race, hair style, breast size of the images they wish to "engage" and then watch in crystal clear, LCD, 54 inch screen, HD clarity as the video game "persons" hump in every form, format, multiple, gender-oriented possibility they can think of.

OR'LY? And to think I've been wasting my time on Virtual Hottie 2, that feature-poor piece of crap (when compared to Mass Effect, apparently).

QUOTE said:
And because of the digital chip age in which we live - "Mass Effect" can be customized to sodomize whatever, whoever, however, the game player wishes.
I'm pretty sure that, if this feature existed, it would have been a major marketing point. "Mass Effect: Sodomize. Anyone. Anywhere."

QUOTE
With its "over the net" capabilities virtual orgasmic rape is just the push of a button away.
With tentacles, I assume.

Well all riiiight!

PS

But wait, there's more.

20080115.jpg

And that's not all.

A day later, he's back, vehemently defending his claims, and using the many comments his first post provoked to somehow validate his brainless blabbery. See, children, that's what you get when you feed the troll.

So, do we have another Jack Thompson in the making?

I've grown rather apathetic for these anti-gamer maniacs/attention whores, they don't even surprise nor offend NOR amuse me... Seriously, maybe just leaving them alone will be enough. But then again, maybe not. Some people, especially elderly people from conservative families, who don't have a clue about videogames sometimes (a lot of times!) actually believe them.

Fortunately, those are just a small minority - but still.

Man I wish you were right about that. Here in the US, you can win elections by scaring that "small minority" into over-reaction, which is precisely what the author intends.

And thanks for the excellent game recommendation veho!

I just thought I'd point out one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen written:

QUOTEWe now know because of the lengthy track record of serial killer after another that addictive use of pornography was prevalent in case after case - long before the switch got flipped and what their masturbatory imaginations have given into became what they were forcing real live human beings to do.

We've got rock solid proof of cause and effect here folks.

This is the same line of "cause and effect" that "proves" that a lack of pirates causes global warming.

Hmmmm, so the fact that some serial killers were also addicted to porn automatically proves that porn leads to mass murders? And not, say, that serial killers were killers from the start, and the same urge that led them to killing is the one that led them to porn addiction? And that, when the porn became insufficient to satisfy that urge, they went on to "harder" stuff? [sarcasm] No, that would be preposterous to claim. [/sarcasm]

Back on topic. I can't believe the idiot would compare gaming with serial murder, but hey, what could we expect from a desperate troll other than misinformed drivel aimed at shocking people with preposterous claims.

Meh. Don't feed the troll, children. Jack Thompson became famous not because of what he was saying, but because of all the reactions he provoked. If all the gamers just ignored him from the start, he would still be anonymous. Same thing here. This guy got some undeserved attention, his five minutes of infamy, and hopefully it will fade away without him gaining any media ground with this escapade.

Of course, to stir things up a little, BioWare could send the guy a complimentary copy of Mass Effect (and maybe an Xbox as well), as "thanks for the free marketing and tons of publicity he provided for the game". Or maybe as "research material".

38% of people not actually entitled to their own opinion. Kevin McCullough is one of those people.

I love these guys, they always stir up random crap regarding video games they know nothing about and make some outrageous claims. What's this about sodomizing and multiplayer rape? I put about 30 hours into this game, got a lame 5 second sex scene and never got to do any of this cool stuff this guy is talking about.. I feel gipped man, he must of got the uncut version or something. He does bring up a good point though, mutliplayer rape mode would rule.

Hmm, it seems the troll was successful.

It didn't stop there.

I stopped watching half way, because I couldn't stand that woman yelling "rape" throughout the entire (first half of the) clip. Yet another witch hunter barking at shadows. And being extremely irritating at that. It seems that the only debating technique she knows is interrupting people.

[sarcasm] If you play a male character, women are treated as objects. If you play as a female, you're having an ego trip from controlling her; again, treating women as objects". And if a woman plays Mass Effect... oh, who am I kidding, women don't play games. [/sarcasm]

"Desensitizing" is the battle cry of the "research-be-damned", who claim that violence in games will encourage violence in real life. Somehow, the fact that children can't tell the difference between a game and real life is entirely irrelevant. Somehow, to them, violent games/movies are a problem much bigger than, you know, bad parenting leading to children not being able to distinguish reality from fiction. Or, I don't know, parents letting television and games be their children's babysitter and only education.

Now I see where I went wrong. My character is Paragon with talent points in Charm. It appears that I should have went the Renegade/Intimidate route to get the rape and sodomy scene.

I won't make that mistake again.

Typical media blowing video game controversy way out of proportion and not really doing any research on what they think they are talking about.

At least they let Geoff get his word in. Probably the first time I've ever seen a major media network allow someone that actually knows what they are talking about in to debate/interview.

That fox news clip....

I find it funny how once the guy starts to say how they are wrong, they are all like "sorry we are out of time"

but then they keep talking about it for over 2 more minutes....

from Kotaku.com:

QUOTE said:
Electronic Arts, likely sick of having their recently-acquired role-playing franchise Mass Effect dragged through the mud on national television, has requested that Fox News Channel correct their error-plagued segment on the game.

In the letter, which cites Kotaku, Jeff Brown, EA's vice president of communications, asks Teri VanHorn, producer of the Live Desk with Martha MacCallum, to clarify "serious errors" the channel made in their Mass Effect story.

"As the parent company of BioWare, the studio which created the game, EA would like you to set the record straight on a number of errors and misstatements which incorrectly characterize the story and character interactions in Mass Effect." The letter starts and then proceeds to outline their very strong case.

Your headline above the televised story read: "New videogame shows full digital nudity and sex." Fact: Mass Effect does not include explicit or frontal nudity. Love scenes in non-interactive sequences include side and profile shots - a vantage frequently used in many prime-time television shows. It's also worth noting that the game requires players to develop complex relationships before characters can become intimate and players can chose to avoid the love scenes altogether.

FNC voice-over reporter says: "You'll see full digital nudity and the ability for players to engage in graphic sex."
Fact: Sex scenes in Mass Effect are not graphic. These scenes are very similar to sex sequences frequently seen on network television in prime time.

FNC reporter says: "Critics say Mass Effect is being marketed to kids and teenagers."
Fact: That is flat out false. Mass Effect and all related marketing has been reviewed by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and rated Mature - appropriate for players 17-years and older. ESRB routinely counsels retailers on requesting proof of age in selling M-rated titles and the system has been lauded by members of Congress and the Federal Trade Commission. In practical terms, the ratings work as well or better than those used for warning viewers about television content.

The letter goes on to point out that the people who wrapped up the segment with a round table were equally clueless about the game: "They have had zero experience with Mass Effect and are largely ignorant about videogames, the people who play them, and the ESRB system that governs their ratings and sales."

The story wraps up by pointing out how insulting the resulting story was to EA and Bioware and asks, not demands, a correction:

The resulting coverage was insulting to the men and women who spent years creating a game which is acclaimed by critics for its high creative standards. As video games continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment. But this represents a new level of recklessness.

Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows?

This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness. We're asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect.

  Sincerely,

  Jeff Brown
  Vice President of Communications
  Electronic Arts, Inc.

Good for you EA, it's important, I think that publishers should step up to the plate to defend themselves, especially in light of such outrageous and patently false claims.

I would never expect for EA to do something like this! I feel.. weird..

Good letter from EA, too bad none of the news services will report anything to retract any of their previous "news".

I can't watch/read about this crap for too long because the absolute lies and garbage the so called experts spew makes me want to start smashing shit.

Report that dickheads.

Yeah, well, this is fox. This is the same channel that claims that atheists are trying to take over the 'christian' country called the United States. After this they had 'experts' sitting around claiming that not being allowed to force religion down people's throats on schools was religious discrimination and that the founders of the US were all christians.

Basically, I don't think fox reporting things that are such extreme bullshit that your IQ drops 50 points instantly is something new. Now, if they would actually reporting on true things, that'd be amazing.

Psh, leave Republicans to know anything about anything technology-related

Let's not forget the words of another great Republican

Ted Stevens said:
Ten movies streaming across that, that Internet, and what happens to your own personal Internet? I just the other day got... an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday, I got it yesterday [Tuesday]. Why? Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the Internet commercially.

[...] They want to deliver vast amounts of information over the Internet. And again, the Internet is not something that you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.

Kotaku reported that this morning and I added a review myself (short and blunt though, not as well thought out as some of the ones on there).
When I checked later in afternoon, Amazon had taken down all the reviews and disable the viewing and posting reviews. It looks like they're all back up now though. I think they deleted the old ones. I can't find my own and the page currently says there are 442 reviews. I'm fairly sure there were over 800 earlier today.
